could i use you as a warning sign - kylin + kyveli - Ivar - 05-28-2018

The gusting winds from the south carried with them the ash from Tephra, and so Ivar has spent most of the morning and afternoon beneath the water. His brief visit to Tephra as a child had been enough to earn a grudging respect for the lava-filled kingdom, but he is not especially fond of the strong smell of sulphur.

Emerging from the water at long last, the piebald kelpie shakes a storm of water from his hide. He tosses back his head to clear the tangled cords of his mane out of his line of vision and glances up and down the beach. It is empty, as he knew it would be this time of day, and Ivar uses the opportunity to his advantage. Kylin is never very far from the shore, but he had been unable to find her yesterday. It bothers the kelpie, that sliver of uncertainty, and he prowls down the beach with a single minded focus until at last he finds her.

She’s facing away from him, which makes it all the easier to slide his muzzle up the curve of her back before stretching his neck across hers in a hug. His affection is slow, lazy even, and fitting for the humid warmth that envelopes the tropical island. It is only when he pulls away for a better look at her does he realize that he held her much differently than he did during their last embrace beneath the moonlight.

He glances back at her belly, no longer distended with child, and realizes that the small moving object ahead of them that he’d ignored until this moment, is not a gargantuan parrot but rather a small purple filly. The piebald kelpie turns his attention back to Kylin, feeling mildly put out that he hadn’t been there to drown it at birth. Well, he decides, as he smooths a hank of lavender mane from Kylin’s neck, there’s other ways to dispose of it.

Since Kyveli’s birth they’ve kept to the small isle west of the main one. It’s nice and silent here, and although Kylin does not really like it to be alone, she was rather alone than surrounded by unknown strangers. ‘Alone’, because with Kyveli around, she is never truly alone.

Her back is turned towards the sea, one of her hindlegs coaxed up in a resting position as she stands in the shade provided by a couple of lost palm trees. Behind her the waves gently roll onto the beach, and the beach carries a cooling breeze that makes her mane and tail sway. It’s the perfect time and place for a nap, except that she has Kyveli to keep an eye on. Kylin does so with pleasure, smiling softly as her hazel eyes watch the purple filly. “What have you found, baby girl?“ she asks, curious as Kyveli seems intrigued by something.

Her attention is solely focussed on the girl – think they are perfectly safe, as Ischia does not know any predators – and it makes her oblivious to Ivar’s approach. He startles her, as he suddenly slides his muzzle across her back. With a gasp she raises her head, ears flicking back as her hazel eyes widen. It is only when she realises it is Ivar that she relaxes again, though her heart is still beating loudly in her chest. “Ivar..” she murmurs, voice slightly hoarse. Instinctively she finds herself leaning into his touch, her own muzzle finding his skin so she can deeply breath in his scent.

“You’re here” she almost purrs, smiling shyly at him  as her gaze searches his. Instead she finds him watching her, and it is only then that he notices Kyveli ahead. Kylin’s gaze follows his to her daughter, unable to hide the warm and loving smile. “Isn’t she beautiful?” she asks, shifting her weight as she leans into his touch, offering him better access to her crest.

Kyveli
The dark purple girl is oblivious to most things when it comes to adults. Especially with mother not receiving more intruding visitors than the Lau, who happened to be a father apparently. Not that he'd visited afterwards however, so she was quite content to forget him.

Today, something shiny had caught her eye, and she wandered a slightly further distance away from her mother than she usually did - probably why she called her. Looking up from the shiny, somewhat moving seaturtle eggs with a baby grin, she was about to reply when she saw that there was a visitor today. A new one!

She made her way over as quickly as she could, in awe by the large male and how much he was different from mother. Obviously they were not related. He smelled male, unlike herself and mother, a bit like Lau. That, in her eyes, made him a father too, for lack of a better word for adult male. "Father?" she asks Kylin, stretching her nose out to him. After all, they also behaved similarly, leaning into momma. To her they are the same, or at least, very similar. She heard that word again, beautiful, but she is far too intrigued with the scales to notice much besides Ivar really.

Klaudius is now reduced to Lau, and Ivar is a father just like him. Nothing weird about this! (:

I V A R
i'll use you as a makeshift gauge of how much to give and how much to take
He is just starting to close his teeth round the delightfully quick beat of Kylin's startled pulse when he spots the filly. Ivar withdraws slowly, every inch a predator who has been spotted by what should have been unwitting prey. He is ever so grateful for the solid barrier that is Kylin’s body when the filly trots up to them, and Ivar’s dark eyes take in the small creature.

She is a shade of darker purple than Kylin, he sees. The incestuous nature of the Covelings is common knowledge, though Ivar cannot help but be curious with amethyst relative Kylin might have couple with to produce such a boldly purple filly. It doesn’t matter, he hear her voice reminding him. He is gone now.

It would be best for this foal to be gone as well, Ivar knows. He could give Kylin another foal - a better foal - and she need not waste time with this subpar offspring. Beside him, the lavender mare’s voice is soft, and he glances at her from the corner of his eye. Kylin seems rather attached to it, if the adoration in her voice is indication. Exactly how upset would she be if Ivar got rid of it? If he hadn’t promised, it wouldn’t matter. If hadn’t promised on a turtle-covered beach all those years ago, he could make her forget this scrawny little creature entirely.

‘Father?’ the little thing asks, and Ivar looks down from over Kylin’s shoulder.

The kelpie sees the value in sparing a young female. Had Kylin borne a colt it might not have been as easy to reconcile his decision with instinct. As it is, the rage keeps quiet in his chest, satiated by the choice and satisfied with the reasoning behind it.

“No.” He replies flatly, his tone as humorless as his expression.

”Better.” Curling beneath Kylin’s belly, Ivar’s finned tail flicks Kyveli’s chin up playfully as his solemn face permits a smile. Kylin fits against him comfortably, and she has leaned against him to grant him better access. His interest in the filly wanes as his attempt to straighten Kylin’s mane turns into pressing a kiss to her neck, and then another, because she is soft and smooth and tastes of the sea.

It’s only as a particularly loud wave crashes that he remembers the child. Without turning his head to answer the question himself (it would shatter the illusion of privacy), he instead breathes a quiet question into Kylin’s tulip ear, softly enough that only she will hear.

“Did she go away yet?”

When he pulls away at Kyveli’s arrival, Kylin unconsciously shifts her weight to press her hip against his flank in an attempt to keep the contact between their bodies. Like his, her attention too, is focussed on the deep purple and lavender ombre girl that prances in her direction. Kylin is unable to hold back, reaching out to press her muzzle against Kyveli’s crest as her left hip is tightly pressed against Ivar.

The innocent question makes Kylin laugh softly, smiling endearing at the girl as she kisses her cheek. But how could she blame her? The only male Kyveli had ever met had been introduced to her as ‘father’, and after that, Klaudius hadn’t paid them any mind. It is not hard to imagine that Kyveli connects being ‘male’ to ‘father. But before she can answer the question, Ivar beats it her. Her nose nudges his neck, but then she reaches out to Kyveli again. “No baby girl, this is Ivar” she introduces him, by the lack of a word to refer to him in a way that is appropriate for her daughter’s ears.

Her hazel eyes search Ivar’s gaze when he claims to be better than Kyveli’s father. She tilts her head to the right, but nevertheless she moves snug at his side. “Better?” she repeats after him, teasing lightly as she presses her lavender muzzle against his neck, right behind his cheek, before watching Ivar interact with Kyveli. A smile lies on her lips, wondering how much the tail would amaze Kyveli.

With Ivar’s muzzle against her neck she lowers her head ever so slightly, so her own muzzle can flick Kyveli’s poll. “What did you find over there?” she asks, nodding in the direction where the purple filly had come from moments ago. In the meantime, Kylin does not get ready to move, instead she happily leans into Ivar’s touch.

Only when he speaks again she remembers her girl is there and can see everything. Flustered she shakes her head, ears tickled by his light and teasing touch. “Ivar, she is still here.” she answers, bending her neck to look at him with one eye. “She can see us” she adds in a soft whisper, only for Ivar’s ears to hear. Her hazel eyes pleads him to understand. Kylin does not want their close proximity to end, but they sure as well didn’t have to be making out right in front of Kyveli.

RE: could i use you as a warning sign - kylin + kyveli - Kyveli - 06-10-2018

Kyveli
The amethyst and lavender girl is so easily wooed by something shiny or pretty. The father is not a father, but a Better, and he’s called I-vah, or I-vurr. Whatever. Her own name has simply been reduced to Kyvi in her own mind, or baby girl like momma calls her. And she calls her mother momma, even though she know sher name is Kylin. But like the other adult’s names, she finds it harder to reproduce that than simply say momma, and besides the lavender and white laday seems to like it when she calls her momma, so there’s that.

She knows she has to learn to speak better, but with only her mother around not much talking is done, instead the dark purple filly rahter reverts to cuddles. But since they have a visitor, she may as well try, and repeats after them. ”I-vy, Better.” she decides to latch on, but then she is just as easily distracted by the finned tail that sways her way, and she rears lowly trying to catch it in her mouth. She has no real teeth, still being weaned though, and her mother’s question again challenges her mind to focus on something else.

She turns her head, leaving the tail (which isn’t moving any longer) and trots a few steps away. ”Shiny!” Because shiny pebbles she believes is what she found. The white eggs had been buried not very deep, and the gull that had found them had presumably eaten half of them already, but the eggs are covered in a bit of water or slime, and Kyveli thought them really shiny, gleaming in the summer sun. Little does she know how close they are to hatching now, in summer, these baby male sea turtles (they’s been buried high enough up to be exposed to lower temperatures). Perhaps if she came back at night she would see them crawling out, and perhaps one or two might make it to the sea - that is if Ivar doesn’t decide to eat them just like the seagulls.

RE: could i use you as a warning sign - kylin + kyveli - Ivar - 06-19-2018

At Kylin's question of 'Better?', Ivar only hums softly in agreement; he'd meant better than a father in general, but he certainly considers himself better than whomever Kylin's father is as well. He is too distracted by the softness of the lavender skin beneath his roving mouth. Only when she pulls away from him, shaking her head and confirming that Kyveli is still present does the kelpie abandon his efforts. He'd much rather toy with Kylin on this summer afternoon, but it does not seem that the child is leaving anytime soon.

Lothbrok had always known to give his parents their space when they were particularly amorous; perhaps Kyveli is not quite as bright. He should not expect much from her, he supposes, she is not his child, after all. But Ivar will keep her safe because Kylin wants that, and the kelpie will keep her safe because she will be prey only when she is grown.

The lavender mare is asking the filly what she'd been doing, and Kyveli answers with a reply that tells him nothing. Have children always been so bothersome, Ivar wonders, or is it simply the fact that she has interrupted his efforts to give her a sibling that is so grating? There's no answer to that question, he knows, and Kylin is unlikely to shoo Kyveli away so they can return to more entertaining activities. Ivar resigns to amuse the foal, and pull away from Kylin's comfortable side to follow the glittering filly down the beach.

'Shiny', she had said, and Ivar spots the disrupted nest. The tiny turtles aren't in danger from the kelpie - he prefers his prey larger and softer - but he does take pleasure in suddenly bolting after the gulls. He catches the pale tail feathers of one of the slower birds, but it pulls away, squawking madly, leaving Ivar with a mouthful of feathers to spit onto the sand.

RE: could i use you as a warning sign - kylin + kyveli - Kylin - 06-19-2018

“I-vy,”
“Better.”

How can she not melt? In very much the same way Kyveli had settled on calling Klaudius ‘Lau’ which had been just as endearing. There is no way she call her daughter no. The smile that makes the corners of her lips curl say all, no words are needed to describe the love of a mother for her child. Kylin is not an exception to that.

For a moment, she is convinced life cannot get better than this. Leaning comfortable against Ivar, who is one of the few things that hadn’t failed her in life, while her most precious possession is also nearby. And thankfully Ivar seems to understand, as he even takes some interest in the purple filly’s findings.

Kylin does not follow them along, instead she shifts her weight to her right hind leg in favour of putting her left hind leg at rest. The sun is warming her back, and although Ivar is not Kyveli’s father, for the first time since her girl’s birth, Kylin has an idea of what a family would be like. Ivar is like a natural dad, well except for the fact that he actually molests one of the birds he had been playfully chasing.

It reminds her of their meeting, when he had taken her out at night to the river to watch the baby turtles hatch. Back then, he had tried to protect them too, where Kylin had wondered if she couldn’t keep one as a pet. His actions make her chuckle, and shake her head amused. “Are you trying to camouflage the baby turtles as seagulls? I don't think they'll fall for that, Ivar,” she teases him, unable to hide the grin from her facial expression.

Kyveli
Kylin does not follow along, and the amethyst filly would be deeply sad about it if she weren't instead followed by the finned-tail-owner Ivy, and takes interest in her little findings. She swells with pride to have found it first, however, she sees him dance with the birds and tilts her head at his movements until he catches them. "Ivy hungry?" she asks him. He seems to be hungry, at least, he is eating a seagull and she's never seen anyone do that so he must be desperate, right? But the grass isn't really that far away, and she looks from him and the feathers to the patch of green that always helps her mother out when she is hungry.

One of the gulls gawk at her, and the girl startles and looks at it. Then she frowns at it. "Bad bird!" she shoos, waving a foreleg at it to keep it away from her findings, the precious-looking eggs who are now mostly egg-shells. She studies the broken shells, and perks her ears when Kylin speaks up to Ivy. Baby turtles? "What's baby turtur?" she wants to know now.
