She remembers the Chamber, the Deserts. She remembers Nocturnal and Quark, Yael and Vanquish, Tatter and Morphine, Straia and Lyric, Frostweaver and Rodrik. Her memories are all tied to the past, to places and horses that don't exist anymore (oho, if you only knew, child). The Chamber, her birthplace... the Deserts, her home. Her mother, who loved her; her aunt, who raised her; her grandsire, the Painted King; the magician she loved as family and the monarchs she disappointed over and over and over again. Her aunt's true love; her half-sister who ruled; her half-sister's father; her one true enemy--they are all names and faces that echo in her head, names and faces she doesn't think she'll ever see again.

Most of them are dead, after all. She had witnessed the merciless murder of her grandsire in the Valley War, saw the dragon burn too brightly where the Deserts faded into the beach. She had run for days afterwards, refusing to accept it and refusing to pause long enough for the tears to escape, for she knew that if she allowed them to fall, they would drown the entire Deserts and all of the lands surrounding it. So she did not stop, except for when she did, to beg forgiveness one last time from her king and queen before disappearing altogether.

No, this new world--perhaps not new any longer, for it has already seen generations rise and fall, but it is still a new taste on her tongue--is not hers. She does not know the hills and valleys, mountains and fields. She has not chased diplomatic missions all across the kingdoms or fought in this world's wars. This is not a world she recognizes and she is not sure that she likes it very much so far, but who is there to even know her face? They are all gone. Gone.

With a tremble, she opens her eyes.
This world may not be hers, but it is her reality now. One day she'll have to face it.
