show me where my armor ends; birthing - Lepis - 09-14-2019

Rain had fallen overnight, and though the heavy clouds were pushed south by the dawn, water still drips from the heavy boughs overhead. The sound of it is muffled by the same fog that has swallowed everything more than a few yards away in its hazy grey-white presence.

Lepis lies on her side, one golden cheek pressed against the thick carpet of fallen pine needles. Her line of sight is bisected - half foggy canopy, half brown-black tree hollow. A stirring beside her has disturbed her waking daydream, and the pegasus blinks away the sleep from her blue-grey eyes as she lifts her head to look toward the source of the disturbance.

Pressed against her belly and mostly concealed by the drape of her feathered wing, a golden foal stirs. He has already been licked clean and dry, but Lepis laves his striped neck and red mane once or twice more for good measure. At first, his coloring had confused her - where is their blue? But then she recalls a particular tryst near the sea, when Bane had captured the darkest red of the sunset in his shining coat.

"Elio." She says, a name as bright as he is, as bright as her memory of his creation. Lepis smiles, proud of herself and of this boy who shares his father's stripes. She brushes her muzzle against his side and wickers encouragement as she pulls herself to her feet.

They are inside the same hollow tree where Celina had been born, a dark place that is safe from the rainy weather of the Taiga. It is nearly wide enough for her to spread her wings from side to side, which she does now before folding them again to her sides. Then she glances back down at her youngest son, smiling fondly and imbuing him with just enough confidence to stand up.

@[Elio]
