    COTY

    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

    He is a curious child.

His biological father had been too, however, but he does not know this. It was what made Mortem such a smart man, all the thinks he’d asked as a child. And BJ full of questions, constantly following Mura and Klaudius around, willing them to answer him.

    “Why’s the sky blue?”
    “How hot is the volcano?
“What does salt water taste like?”
“Dad why is your coat a girls’ color?”

The constant questioning is enough for them to send him on his way to do things other than pester them. Mother was good about mealtime, but save for that, she was not nurturing or remotely loving. Father kept him more as a consultation prize, ignoring him unless he was showing him off to the others with a smug “look what I have!”

It is a lonely life the boy leads. No one wants to be around him, so he finds himself practicing his powers a lot. It had started one day by accident, when a seagull had spooked him. He had thrown the seagull, probably ten feet, with his mind. He didn’t know if anyone else had these abilities, so he kept them to himself until he learned about them.

He moved lighter stuff (little volcanic rocks, tiny seashells) at first, honing in, his entire focus on carrying it even the slightest bit. It was exhausting, and after every session he would have to rest for awhile.

But he grew stronger, more capable everyday. As his mind grew from all the questions he asked, so did his power. Soon, he could move the big boulders down the length of the beach, and hold onto the moles that tried to run away from him. He would crush the skulls of field mice and rip the tails off fish, because he was bullied, and he wanted someone else to feel his pain.

It’s what he’s doing today. One by one he collects his mice and plays with them. He holds them by their thin little tails, twirls them around. Beetlejuice splays them out on the ground, a surgeon, rips their limbs off. First a leg, then an arm, maybe just a finger, an eyeball. Then, he presses down on their skulls until he hears the sickening crunch, and he throws it off to the side with all the other rats he’s caught.

So is the way of life, predator and prey. He’s lonely, bored, cast out...he’d do anything for a friend.

    Anything.

He wanders, on the edge of insanity, these days.  There were few things here he hadn't seen.  Even fewer he hadn't tried to destroy.  But as one plant met its demise, his mother was quick to repair it.

    Fucking A-NNOY-ING!

The winter hadn't touched much of Tephra but with spring came teensy flowers and he despised flowers.  They were so pretty and girly and cutesy. PUKE!  He finds such a flower and stomps his hoof atop it with a cackle.  "Die flower, DIE! Mwahhahhha," he chants with a mischievous grin and glowing demon eyes.  Quickly he spots another, and another, and another, "Gods! They are reproducing." He says reproducing like he really knows what it means.  Only a yearling though, he knows very little about such things.

With a wrinkle of his muzzle in disgust, he re-examines the travesty before him... "Well now... We can't have that now can we," he says, almost matter-of-a-fact like.  The wheels in his mind begin turning and soon death seeps from his hooves.  The poison dries all the fodder around him to a crisp, along with it the once colorful flora dims as well.

    Death is a beautiful thing...

Satisfied with his new patch of dust, his head rises.  Fiery eyes finding movement not far off in the field, something blackish with blueish tips.  This is one such thing he has never seen before, so he approaches bravely.  Whoever it was, was smaller than him and so he does not fear them.  His voice calls out, "Hey you! Kid... What you doing out here all alone?" He finally is close enough to see it for what it was, a foal, not more than a few weeks old.  His mottled face tilts as he looks to the child's activities.  Strange.  Is his first thought.  I like it!  His second and last...

The sound of an approaching specimen causes Beetlejuice to glance up from his activities. The rock he's controlling floats casually in the air, the mouse still tucked firmly between the ground and his hoof. The child looks down again, eyeballs staring intently at his weapon. With the flick of his nose, it repeatedly bashes the head of his victim, until it is nothing more but a bloody mess of mashed brains and fluid. He takes the rodent between his ebony lips, throwing it into the ever-growing pile of bodies.

"I'm playing," He says coolly, searching around for another animal to terrorize. Above, a seagull calls. Beetlejuice looks to a particularly heavy boulder, and with another twist, it is flying into the air. The bird does not expect this, and as such, plunges to the grassy plains below them. "Those birds are annoying." He says, turning to the stranger again. "I'm Beetlejuice."

With his head raised at its peak height, his firey eyes note the growing pile of dead vermin.  He was unsure what he was witnessing and it is clear by the slight tilt of his head.  Amusement crawls across his face though at the colts spitfire answer.  He causes him to chuckle softly but the laughter soon dissipates as a boulder is cast into the sky, aiming for the sharp screech of gull flying overhead.  Zain's head tips upward as he views the smart smack of bone on stone and the body falls lifelessly to the soil.

The angle of his head had followed the birds trajectory and now he looks to the colt, "Impressive," he sneers.  Ideas pop into his mind at the kids usefulness in his own en-devours.  "How would you like to be part of my crew, kid?"  he proposes with a devious grin....

Beetlejuice longed for a friend. Well, any companionship, for that matter. So when the older colt asks him to join his “crew,” the ghost perks his ears up.

“What kind of crew?” He asks, flicking his tail. He hoped it would be one worth his time and energy, one where he could use his powers to take on those weaker than him, one that would allow him to be the bully, and not the bullied.

It was a dangerous game they were playing...just wait until others got involved.

@[Zain] figured after this they could go to the playground and meet some Sylva peeps?

The mottled bay was the spitting image of his father.  He often envied the fire wielders great powers and lived to hear stories of when he was young.  The one that intrigued him most involved his mother(least likely of all the ponies in BQ).  He had banned a group of misfits together and wreak havoc on Beqanna with their combined powers.  Ironically he had come to learn that his mother had once held the poison that he could will to seep into the soils.  That she had traded it for the power to renew what had been destroyed.  He thought her foolish for giving up such a grand talent.  His father had also told him how the aftermath had changed him.  That's where he always ended the story and where Zain was determined to continue it...

As his flaming eyes look down at the younger colt, he simply grins when the boy questions him, "One you'll want to be a part of I assure you..." With his final syllable he turns and begins walking to the brook that separated the volcanic rocks from the mainland, "Stick with me kid and your talents will not go unnoticed..."
