    COTY

    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

Be cunning, and full of tricks - Munroe.

Sometimes she thinks she can hear a tiny voice, apprehensive and shaken, in the kind of empty spots in her head where mother’s warnings and lullabies don’t go. A special place, not entirely her own but shared. Both of theirs – though she doesn’t know who she shares her head with. But, all the same, when it comes a-rattling, she tries to listen best she can. Because she feels she must. Like somehow, she owes that little speaker; like the things it says are important, not just for it, but for her, too.
So her ears swivel and swerve and she stands up tall, cocking her head, and holding her breath. Squeezing one eye tight (never both eyes!), trying to block out the dull thud of hooves and the squeal of young foals…

But it’s gone. Mother’s warning and lullabies singing through her ears in its stead. She drops down to her front paws, disappointed. Her nose twitches (it always twitches) and for a second she can feel that jolt like electricity flick its center. She flinches and thinks she has felt that, but much worse, before; one day mother will tell her why she feels these things like phantoms shocking her lips and legs and why she hears that little voice. She will curl her up at night and tell her of her strange birthday, why she is a two fused into a singular whole. Maybe then (maybe only then) she will feel one and undisputed.

But then, maybe she is made and meant to be two.
Nature doesn’t solder souls together everyday, does she?

She turns and lopes a step, keeping close to the thicket rimming the open meadow – brush and tangles of wild raspberry plants. It’s where she feels most safe as this self. Her nose wriggles. She stands on her hinds feet, looking around. Back onto all fours. She has learned to be careful. Always so careful.
When she is sure the coast is clear (for now) she settles onto her rear, bringing her front paws up like in prayer in front of her, wetting them with her tongue and rubbing them down the bridge of her nose and her cheeks. She does the same again, wetting the thick fur on the undersides of her paws, then twists her head and grabs a long ear, pulling it across to lick what she can of the inside.
    One and then the other.

And then, satisfied that she is clean, she slips into the ragged edge of dense vegetation and meadowgrass, where she has hollowed out a form of her own, and lays down, legs kicked out behind. Watching. Always watching.

We've become desolate. It's not enough, it never is.
Living is hard enough without you fucking up.
Refr and Shual streak between his legs excitedly, gekkering in-between the playful nips they give to his heels. They’ve finally worn him down enough to venture out from the desert. Munroe was always quite reluctant to leave his home as it seemed to only land him in trouble. He acidly remembers the strange Ima fake and the wind-bully. Plus, the meadow only contained nothing but bad memories that reigned from his childhood.

It had certainly taken some work for the fennec pair to coax the wild child out from his desert domain.

    But they had finally succeeded.

Of course, he wouldn’t have allowed his beloved friends to endure the harsh cold of winter for they were truly desert-born creatures. He managed to hold off their advances until the warmer temperatures of spring began to settle in and life began to flourish once again. They were delighted in the lush greenery beneath their furry paws and the streams that snaked their way through the land. He intended to let them try their hand at fishing once the novelty of the place began to lessen.

Suddenly, they rush off away from him and into the brush where their sharp eyes had caught sight of the largest and plumpest bunny they had ever seen. It was instinct for them to never let potential prey be passed on for their world consisted of vast spaces of seemingly nothing. Being a hunter in the desert could be a difficult job at times. The tangled brush didn’t bother them for they were stealthy and petite, small enough to fit in some of the narrowest of burrows.

Munroe attempts to follow alongside within the clearing and he finally sees what had caught their attention. He chuckles at his friend’s confidence for the rabbit was quite larger than the both of them put together. But he was well aware of just how great of hunters they truly could be. He tries to keep his noise down to a minimum for he did not want to be the reason for their failed hunt. He’s sat through too many lectures from his hungry companions to want to ruin it now.

Refr maneuvers himself towards the front of the creature while Shual gathers herself for the pounce from behind. Shual is generally the better hunter and so she carefully places her paws so as not to disturb the thick grasses beneath her. The fur between her pads were great at muffling noise in this flora and she found it quite surprising for its purpose was to mainly keep her feet from burning on the hot desert sand.

The wild child watches in anticipation and he holds his breath when Shual tenses up for the pounce. Closer and closer she creeps before she coils herself up like a viper before making a leap. Refr waits about two feet ahead, crouched and ready to spring if the rabbit bolts towards his way.

    And the chase was on.

She knows not to stretch out her legs like this. It is a vulnerability indulged by the equine part of her. Her powerful hind legs are the key to her flight. She feels another zap on her nose, a scolding touch. She figures it to be a token of her mother’s ceaseless worrying, an intrusive thought meant to parry her adventurous nature. She snorts and would smile, indeed, if her lips weren’t so permanently set in displeasure in this little self!

One big ear raises from its rest and tips a bit forwards and to the side – she can hear leaves rustle against one another and far away (past the gurgle of water and into the dimly lit hold of the forest), the sharp snap of a twig. Her nose is constantly shifting. Up and down, up and down. With her buggy eyes, she can see all around her.

She needs all of these things when she does not have size. She lives in a dangerous place, after all. A place made by the Mother for strange and gnarly critters (not for cottontails, so much). To Longear, it is really more of a wonderland: psychedelic birds in a big, bright canopy; apes howling overhead and shaking vines. Everywhere, there are fantastical, small places, like big fallen trees hollowed out, to be explored – these are usually filled with bugs, attracted to the damp inside. Gross but neat.

Her right ear cocks. Her eyes dart and hold and her nose shifts. Up and down. They are terribly quiet and small. But they are made for a different place. They are buff against green, when they are used to being buff against warm sand.

    She freezes.
    ‘Run.’
Her nose stops twitching for a second, her breath holding. No. She tenses her skin. But that’s not how it works. It is a thought thing. A mental evocation more than a physical will.
    ‘We need to run.’
Not now… She curls her back legs under her, slow, getting to her four paws.
‘Always the back feet! They’re all you have when it’s go time.’
I know. She looks at them, they are bright and big-eared, tense like held back springs. Odd things. She looks, too, at the tangled knot of bushes on all sides. Where she can slip through, they can too. This is no good. She begins to see white panic, clouding her vision and rushing hard pumps of blood through her body.
‘You aren’t even going to try?! Not. Fair. I’m not ready.’
The words flow through her like strange other-thoughts, but this one rings! It screams and rattles around and she jumps. A powerful shock races down her spine and the rabbit screams, shrill and alarming. She clamps her eyes shut and in that second she shifts into her filly body. The screams die down and she breathes heavy, wrestling against the snare of stalks and leaves. “I’m much bigger that you two, you know!” she warns, her voice shaky, fighting out from under the bush and scrambling to her hooves. She hasn’t noticed the wild man yet, she is staring at the strange foxes with a sullen frown.

Refr watches the bunny’s nose twitches and flickering ears intently and realizes that perhaps they had not been as silent as they had presumed. Still, the creature had allowed Shual to approach too close and would have to be extremely quick to outrun the lithe, little fox. But as she made her move, their prey began to scream shrilly and violently thrash about. Shual landed awkwardly and retreated closer to Refr as they both watched it in confused fascination. They had never seen a defense mechanism of this kind with the desert hares. But they wondered if it was actually terribly diseased and their interest in the poor thing evaporated like the desert rain.

They wouldn’t risk themselves over one measly rabbit.

The wild child had startled badly when their hunt had been disrupted by an ugly noise and he worriedly trampled through the brush to check on his little friends. He stepped into view just as the rabbit transformed into a girl who proceeded to attempt to bully Shual and Refr who merely laughed raucously in response to her half-hearted threat. They were predators who knew when their prey was trying to bluff. But the two knew when their hunt was over and Shual sniffed haughtily at the girl.

We wouldn’t want to eat something that disease-ridden any way!

Munroe muffles a chuckle at Shual’s biting words and draws closer to the small group. The two fennec foxes yip affectionately in greeting, but continue to eye the weird prey-girl just in case she were to attempt to bully the wild child as well. They were fiercely overprotective of him and wouldn’t tolerate any aggressive actions towards his person.

Munroe’s hazel eyes studied the girl curiously, and for once did not hold immediate hostility for a stranger. Perhaps since she shared her spirit with a prey animal, he did not sense any sneakiness underlying her actions like the strange wind-boy or maliciousness such as the time-traveler. She also was not in any position to pull Ima’s attention away as the winged girl whom Ima also had adopted.

The shapeshifting did not bother him for Ima was magic itself and often times transformed in order to properly guard the borders of their home. But he didn’t understand the choice of a rabbit when compared to the magnificence of a golden dragon that Ima would choose. But Ima was confident and strong, but yet gentle and kind. Perhaps this girl reminded him of Ima somewhat in that she appeared to be gentle as well.

    Who you?
