    COTY

    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

    Mazikeen
Mazikeen tenses when Gale jumps, feeling both an annoying sense of worry for his safety and trepidation about him coming closer. And then he’s on her branch and hugging her before her mind can even spit out a coherent thought.

The hug doesn’t fully chase away her sadness and yet her annoyance at being so much smaller than him doesn’t temper the warmth she finds in the contact. The comfort. The way his laughter brings out a smile so effortlessly as it rumbles against her black fur (even if the purring makes her consider shifting into a porcupine).

    She missed hearing that laugh.

Her ears flick when he speaks and she watches as he stretches on the branch. Mazikeen is cycling between the thrill of having him close (and apparently content to stay there) and thinking she’s beyond stupid for the way her heart still races when she looks at him. Even when he calls her fascinating, because she’s not entirely sure if that’s a compliment or not.

She doesn’t like when he compliments her. If this follows the theme of his last visit - now is when things are going to start to fall apart.

“Gale…” But whatever she was going to say evaporates from her mind because light catches her attention. It is so alien to her now that Mazikeen’s first thought is danger and then all other thoughts cease. Driven purely by instinct she moves from her spot quickly, shifting into a large white owl and flaring her wings in an effort to shield Gale with her back to whatever is coming for them.

In the same moment, her owl’s head turns around to peer through the branches though she’s forced to close her eyes because the initial flash is so bright even through the needles. When she opens them again, she sees spots and then a world in colour.

“Is that the sun?” A quiet, foolish question but her mind hasn’t quite caught up to the present moment again. She hasn’t even lowered her wings.
