It’s more than accomplishment that draws him, more than any petty claim one might be able to make on how they’ve spent their time. If she had asked, Reave would have told her just how boring it truly is. He has many more interesting endeavors to his name that sound far less impressive than taking a territory.
At the end of the day, it is those endeavors that would scrawl his name across history.
Israfel might find herself embarrassed that she has not, on the surface, accomplished as much as he, but that is not what draws Reave to her. He can read the embarrassment just as he could all her delightful emotions before, but beyond a faint smile, he makes no comment on it. Because if he were to be honest, he would tell her that it is not what she has done that makes her interesting. It’s everything she might still do.
Her ambition and curiosity, that insidious desire for more, is written through her just as clearly as all the rest. And Reave wants nothing more than to draw it from her.
“It’s only just the beginning,” he replies after a brief, heavy pause, corner of his lips quirking slightly upwards. “For both of us.”
He can’t seem to help the way his gaze is continuously drawn back to her however. She is intriguing, yes, but she is also beautiful. Her golden skin glimmers enticingly in the daylight. If she were just pretty, he might have been able to ignore it, but there is so much more than a pleasant appearance to Israfel. The combination proves nearly irresistible.
So when she asks what his look is for, he cannot stop the low chuckle that escapes his throat. He could tease, or he could offer the truth. Because he is Reave, he offers the truth in a voice that is both husky and devilish. “I would not be a healthy male if I did not look at you like that.”
