    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

For months, the bearshifter had been waiting, waiting for something he knew was coming.  He'd kept it hidden from Azar, not wanting her to suffer the same dread that he was.  She'd been through enough already in her young life as it was, before she came to be part of his family.  With Reagan's departure, Siberian had been living his days as if each would be the last that he would spend in Taiga, for he doubted that Ruan would allow him, allow them, to stay, based upon how badly the two stallions' first encounter had gone.  And now, it seems apparent that the sands in the hourglass had run out, for upon the evening breeze is the ice-mage's glacial scent, getting stronger and stronger.  Hackles raised, he steps to the mouth of the cave with a quick backward glance to be sure that the little pegasus is still asleep after their playing earlier.

As he watches the other male approach, the bear whispers in the back of his mind, but he ignores it for now, not wanting to call upon it unless absolutely necessary, for this was likely to be a delicate situation.  Every muscle in the Budyonny's body is tense, ears pointed backwards with wariness.  Once Ruan begins speaking, however, those very same ears swivel back to their normal tilt with surprise.  It is not the threat of exile, but the offer of permanent sanctuary that the lord of Taiga has come to offer.  The black stallion inclines his head in acknowledgement of the begrudging acceptance that escapes Ruan's lips, listening as the other horse asks him for his oath.  He had already sworn the same oath before, to Reagan when she granted him the impossible gift of his lost eyesight, and so renewing it would not be a hardship, even if it was his sort-of-rival asking for his vow this time.  And so, he agrees to it, words clipped but sincere.  "I do so vow, to serve and protect the Taiga and her people, to the best of my abilities.  "
