    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

    Seeking An Alliance (Ruan)
    #2
He was drenched in sweat, having run himself hard again. His breaths came in deep sucks of air, and his muscles burned from the exercise. The season was hard on him. He'd never had one without his wife, not since the last one when he was too consumed in grief to desire much of anything, and his natural instincts were powerful. Hard to ignore. But he fought it. All he had here at home lately were his daughters. And he fought it.

His head turned at the call ringing through their trees, and the wild flashed in his eyes before dimming. Aten. Just Aten, not a stranger. And he made his way to him with an even pace, his steps deliberate with the natural ease of someone accustomed to traveling lightly, quietly. A hunter, like the black wolf he used to be.

"Ruan," the golden stallion greeted him when he came into view, and he nodded acknowledgement with an easy smile for Aten, blue eyes bright and curious. "I was wondering if you have some time to talk? I'd like to discuss an important matter with you." His brows pulled together briefly as he wondered what may be so important to him. But his expression smoothed again, because it didn't matter. Whatever it was, he was sure they could find an answer together.

"Of course, Aten. What's on your mind?"

He continued closer, drifting through the natural fog of their homeland. It settled and swayed between the trees, swirled slowly away with his movements. He liked the coolness of it, the darkness of their home beneath the trees and the chill in the air that smelled of pine and mountains and rain. Even their small meadows were beautiful, and he suspected those may be Aten's favorite places. He paused, still with a smile, and waited to hear what was concerning the golden stallion.
