    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

Little Azar accuses him of working too hard, but how could he not?  At least up until now, anyway.  There was a regime change in Taiga, one far far worse in his opinion.  As a father, the overthrow of Ruan by that crimson-eyed sadist was just about the worst thing he can imagine.  How had this even happened?  Siberian had believed the wolf-shifter to at least be a strong leader, despite their thorny past.  But, the wolf had been away on the day that the cremello strolled in and claimed dominion of the piney forest....he had not even been present to contest it.  And now Taiga was rapidly filling up with various brutes and horses who delighted to wallow in blood the same way he would splash about in his fishing stream with his daughter.  They were far worse than Zayn had ever been.  At least his once-master had had self-control and a reason for the things he did, even the things that were less than sterling.  Some of the new residents showing up here just seemed to want violence and carnage for kicks.

Especially that female who called herself Thana.  He did not like the look of her at all, and it had taken everything he had upon first glimpsing her from a distance, the dangerous look in her eyes, the air of mad glee about her, to keep from yielding to the bear within and allowing it to rip her to bits.  He did not want Azar to grow up in the company of such monsters....perhaps it was time to move on, though he dreaded having to give up his eyesight once again if he left Taiga for good.  With Misra dead, clearly murdered though he had yet to discover who had done the deed, and their child missing, the filly he had adopted remained the center of his life, the main reason to keep going day after heartbroken day.  The little pegasus curls up next to him as they sit in the cave, warm and dry, and listen to the rain fall.  She tells him that she loves him, before she hides her face in his thick fur, and he lets out a deep sigh, thinking of all that he has been through, all that he has lost in his life.  At least he still had his daughter.  "I love you too, little one. "  Staring blankly out into the rain, the Budyonny lets his mind drift, thoughts of where a new sanctuary might be found tumbling around like rough jewels in a cutting wheel.
