    COTY

    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

There are moments that the words don't reach, there is suffering too terrible to name. You hold your child as tight as you can, and push away the unimaginable...

Sometimes, it's easier to just run away.

Diable Rouge had never been one to run away...ever. He had always toughened the hard times out - because what was life if you did not persevere through the hardships? It was a sign of weakness to abandon post, to flee when life becomes difficult. He didn't run away when his mother was being brutally beaten by his father, he had stayed and fought - a battle both he and his mother lost, with a number of scars to prove it. He also didn't run away when the wicked mare abandoned her child along the border of Tephra, with not a speck of guilt in the process. And while he did not gain any scars physically from this experience, the mental scars continued to ooze blood - this is something he would never forgive himself for.

The rusty stag knew horses died everyday, sometimes from horrible, sickening events. However, this did not make the ache inside him go away. It didn't seem quite fair that a child had to die because of his own distractions. It didn't seem fair that a young filly would have to live with the image of his death for the rest of her life...that she might even feel responsible for what had happened. None of this seemed fair at all, and it angered him.

So, it seemed easier to flee whatever existence Tephra had given him for his stay. Solace and Svedka left him with Kaiode's lifeless body, and for what felt like days, the roan cried. He wept because he could not save the fragile child; he sobbed because it had been his fault...had he paid closer attention, his adoptive child would be by his side now as he roamed through the dense forest.

He had wanted so badly for the child to survive, he would've done most anything to make it happen. That fateful day, as his "mother" left him to fend for himself, he would've given his own life to see him flourish...he felt the same way the day his son jumped from the rock to his inevitable death, Solace's beam of light worsening an already horrendous fall. He couldn't blame the child...it wasn't her fault; no, the only person who needed to feel guilt was him.

He had stopped in the field briefly, but decided it would be too easy for Ellyse to find him there. Ellyse had been so kind to him - she had introduced him to her home, neither of them knowing the pain it would cause. Rou hadn't said a word to anyone about his absence in the kingdom he had once called home - no, it seemed better to fade into the shadows, and try to live with the guilt that lay heavy on his breast.

No one would miss me anyways... The words were sad, but true - he thought Tephra could make him something, but all it made him was a failure with the weight of death on his shoulders.

Winter had turned him bitter - in the days that followed Kaiode's death, he felt himself grow cold - a hardened shell of who he used to be. Nothing could quell the hurricane within him - he was better off a shadow in the naked trees around him.

...The moments when you're in so deep, it feels easier to just swim down. He moves uptown, and learns to live with the unimaginable.
in the eye of a hurricane, there is quiet.
