    COTY

    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

the incense that sun on prairie offers to sky
Snow falls, but it melts before it even hits the ground.
Spark is not surprised by this, she has chosen to stand close beneath the volcano’s smoldering cone that still spouts enough ash to mix with the wind, and now the snow. It is only the ash that lands soft as a kiss on her pale back. The ash smudges her skin, less striking against the paleness of her until bits of it streak the black bonnet on her brow and the black shield-shaped patch on her breast. Her mismatched eyes peer through the miasma that is thick and familiar to the Tephran landscape as it is to her, a haze that hangs thick in the air and does not bother her as it might some.

She has chosen to be alone over here, without her twin who is no doubt being run ragged by his own set of twins who have discovered their ability to shift shape into two little rambunctious black panthers that climb and claw all over one another. Just thinking about those two and their impish antics is enough to bring a smile to her face but it is a little sad at the corners, just starting to droop because another season has gone by and Spark has no foal of her own. She ought to have had a foal of her own by now but no, she is left to stand back and watch as those that she loves with all her heart have little ones of their own.

Spark knows that she must stop thinking these thoughts. They are no good for her. Not as much as the telling of her besmirched love for another had been. It had felt good to lighten the burden just the tiniest bit by talking to Ledger. The flaxen chestnut stallion had proven to be a good listener and she could not help but feel something for him, something inexplicable that kept her even from him now, in this moment. Because Spark did not know herself any better than she had a year or two years ago. All that made sense to her was that she was a daughter of Offspring and Spear’s twin sister. And that in the midst of all this, she had been sick then the fire made her better and stronger somehow.

Now she could use her fire mimicry to become a horse of pure living flame and she clung to that more than anything else at the moment. She could not help it, but she began to smoke and bits of her skin began to fall off revealing the fire underneath until there stood there not a mare of flesh and bone, but a mare of fire that was sinuous and liquid in her shape. Sometimes, Spark could not help these… outbursts. They just happened and as quick as she stood there making the earth burn underneath her flaming hooves, she regrew her skin and tamped the fire back down beneath it. All around her, the ash continued to fall in the quiet and Spark closed her eyes, not quite asleep but not so much as dreaming either. She just shut out the ashy haze and concentrated on just breathing and keeping the fire at bay.
