    COTY

    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

    Glim is happy.
Ridiculously happy. Almost to the point of delirium. Dim, as an extension of his spotty filly and her shadow-powers, is also happy whenever he trails after her. Sometimes she is alone when he annoys her too much and she banished him back to wherever it is she conjured him up out of.

Most of the time they can be seen roaming the hills and chasing each other through the trees. They nap beside the big blue lake where the fishes slap the surface with their tails and bugs walk like gods across the ripples. Other times they hop over the rockiest parts of the mountainsides and from ridge to ridge as if they too, were mountain goats.

    Kagerus raises her right.
    Solace smiles at her.

Dim occasionally winks in and out of existence without her say-so. He reports back to her errant actual mother. Glim doesn’t know about these furtive little trips he takes. Wasn’t even aware that shadows had secret agendas too. The day she learns of this will be a sad day for the two of them. There will be strife between them but somehow they’ll go on because they are part of one another.

For now, they are both blissfully ignorant as they go about gamboling and exploring. Today they are drawn in by the groves of trees. Wisteria. Cherry. The trees are shot through with every conceivable variation of red and gold they can think of. There are a few oranges and yellows too.

It should be mentioned too, that today her shadow-companion is in the shape of a yellow-eyed lynx. To the unassuming eye it would seem as if she is being chased by a predatory cat until the giggles and shrieks of delight precede their happy tumbling and running. Of course the only things about Dim that are ever the same is the vague shadowy substance he’s made of - there but not there, quite confusing but neither of them question it - and his yellow eyes.

Sometimes in the midst of their play, they get all tangled up together: shadow-thing and filly.

Sometimes he changes from lynx to wolf then back again. Once, he even shifted into a leggy colt! But they give chase to one another amidst laughter and her blowing snorts of out-of-breathness. They take turns yelling “Tag, you’re it!” until eventually the spotty filly and her shadow-friend are exhausted by their games.

They move slowly beneath the interlocking canopy of branches and burnt leaf. Two pairs of sleepy eyes seem to miss much around them - what have they to fear? This is sanctuary and a well protected one at that. Firm in such an assurance, their matched steps Peter out to almost stillness with equally sleepy nods of their heads. Finally the filly can go on no more and she curls up into the root-arms of a cherry tree.

Dim lays draped around her in lynx-form again. He keeps watch as she sleeps. Since shadows don’t really need sleep... but he has always matched her in just about everything when not showing his own independence as a sentient shadow. But even Dim is lulled by the passage of cloud across sky from what little glimpses can be seen through the breaks in the thickly knit branches.

No one notices that someone is nearby until Glim lifts her head, blinking blearily and calling out in a sleepy tone - “Who goes there?”
