Warlight didn't know what to think, she had just kept walking.
Her insides were shaky, her head was hammering and Clayton's heavy sighs weren't helping. She could tell he was thinking it all over, trying to work out how the attack could have been prevented, but she wasn't sure there was blame to be put anywhere. And that's what terrified her.
"It was a stupid mistake," Warlight replies with more force than sympathy, forgetting that Clayton may be putting that mistake on his own young shoulders. But something stops her from disagreeing with him entirely, and instead, she bites her tongue. She can't quite name the feeling keeping her from running home but she knew Velk would let their family know that she was fine, and that was good enough for now.
Eventually, the two yearlings reach a grassy meadow and her trauma makes way for her hunger. Angrily the bay-splashed girl tears into the summer grasses, but only a few of the young blades make it into her stomach.
"We'll stay here," she finally says, after actually chewing a bite or two and looking around with an appraising glance. The meadow was surrounded by a tangle of young fuchsia trees which would shield them from any searchers in the sky. "At least for tonight then we can decide what to do in the morning."
She couldn't think past that, not yet. Maybe once the glaring daylight was gone she could think.
