    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

The dark had always suited Badwolf best, shadows wrapping their way around her inconsequential form, hiding the awkwardly assembly of castoffs and spare parts that made up her greying frame. Garish daylight pierced her eyes with agony and wiped out her vision, and it was far too easy to let her body dissolve to dust, crumble into nothingness until the dark embraced her once again. But today was apparently a special damn day, ‘cause two of her three children cornered her in what limited shadows she could find here in this rough red canyon, pressed against her, and herded her gently forward, much to her goddamn annoyance.

“What the fuck is so important it can’t wait ‘til nighttime?” she growled, but Tomu and Aska had inherited every bit of her stubbornness, and just kept nudging and shouldering her on. She grumped and pinned her ears and nipped at the pair of them, one on each side guiding her despite the daylight stealing her sight, until she heard a voice she’d thought long-since gone forever.

“Mom? Tomu, Aska? What are you--hi!”

Gaudy blue eyes, another curse from her mother, stared into the brilliant white nothingness, searching fruitlessly for the elusive form of her wayward daughter. She had her father’s elegant beauty, her stride smooth and feminine, a saucy smile Badwolf could still call to mind as if it were yesterday, but it was far too bright out for her to actually see the odd results of her sire’s starry colors, black swirled with yellow and orange, her hair falling in teal and dark blue locks that framed her pretty face just so. She was all her sire’s daughter, and had somehow missed out on Badwolf’s unfortunate jumbled conformation.

    Lucky little bitch.

“Yara!” Aska exclaimed, rushing forward and leaving Badwolf to her own devices. Yara was the baby of the family, after all, and Aska had always had a soft spot for her baby sister. Hell, both of her ironborn children had. Badwolf could hardly blame them, even when Tomu deserted her to go fuss over Yara. However, she stayed where her eldest had left her, ears pricked forward to listen to her children’s affectionate reunion. No sense making a damn fool of herself tripping over a rock when Yara had two perfectly good eyes and could come to her.

    Presumably, at least.

And eventually she did, a soft muzzle touching hers, nuzzling against the side of her face, the faintest whisper of a shadow darkening the blinding light just enough that damaged eyes could focus on the vague shape of her daughter’s obscenely pretty face. “Hello, Yara.”

“Mom.” Yara’s voice was honey-sweet and full of genuine affection, and Badwolf couldn’t help but nuzzle her back just a little. “I...I’d love for you to meet my family. My love, Morphling, our two children, Seethe and Pixel. Um. Apparently his rather extended family--your timing is incredible, honestly, I...I’m so happy you’re here.” She pressed a kiss to Badwolf’s cheek, and god dammit but how could a mother resist that invitation?

“Alright, well. Take me to them, then.” And she walked along with her youngest daughter, shoulders brushing together, trying to pretend she wasn’t completely floored by the idea of apparently being a grandmother. Tuck that one away to deal with in the dark of night, when she could see clearly in more ways than one.

((Joining the party: Badwolf, Tomu, and Aska.))
