    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

i scraped my knee while i was praying.
She had not kept her promise, even though she had meant well when she told herself she was back for good this time. It is easy for her to fade in and out as she pleases, never really here nor there, but in doing so, she has lost so much. Mother has vanished once again, though she knows that in troubled times Scorch will return – Sarkis, however? She is as unpredictable as the weather and she despises herself for it. She has to do better. She will do better, she tells herself, but here she is – fading in, fading out; much like the tides, she cannot decide whether or not she wants to kiss the shore.

The changes come about suddenly, so suddenly she wonders if a god themselves had bestowed them upon her, forcing her to become something that she was never meant to be. The brindling along her legs glows anew, an electric purple that dazzles her if she stares for too long, and the star upon her forehead does the same. A burning upon her shoulders is the only warning she gets before feathered wings burst from them and she screams as within seconds, they grow to their full size and plumage, the roaned brown color of the feathers shot through with the same dazzling white-purple as her legs and head.

As suddenly as it has begun it had ended, and she finds her body humming with an unknown-to-her electric current, sure to give a little shock to anyone who were to brush against her. Sarkis is panting hard as the adrenalin begins to wear off, legs braced apart to steady herself as her brand-new wings sag towards the ground. She glances back towards them in wonderment, unsure of how to even control them or tuck them in – but at just that thought, she instinctually knows how to pull them in tight to her body, though the tips of her wings still manage to brush the ground. She’ll learn eventually.

Trembling and scared, she glances around, wondering if Heartfire is about anywhere. Her niece is much wiser than Sarkis could ever hope to be, and a lot more headstrong – she’ll know what happened and how to explain this. Right? She has to. Because Sarkis has no idea what just happened; she thought she would just be plain ol’ Sarkis forever. Now... now she has a gift of her own.
