    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

She bursts into life like a flower taking bloom for the first time, vibrant and lovely. The world around her is so much colder than life inside of her mother’s womb, and the filly can’t help but tremble as Kensa’s warm tongue washes over her, clearing away the afterbirth to reveal the brilliant rose gold markings adorning her coat. Slowly she blinks open her eyes, so similar to her dam’s, and waits while the world comes into focus, cold and bright. Instinctively she presses as close to her mother as she possibly can, wanting desperately to escape the chilly air.

Her mother says something, but the words are as foreign to her as the rest of the world and she fixes Kensa with a puzzled stare, whickering softly in response. There is a crunching sound nearby and the girl turns towards the new sound, eyes widening as a pastel girl charges forward and presses her nose to the newborn’s. There is a bigger one too, gold and white, and she watches with wide doe eyes as he reaches forward to brush against her forehead. She wonders if she should be scared of all of these strangers, but her mother at her side seems to be at ease, and these two don’t seem to want to hurt her.

Suddenly more curious then afraid, she pulls her legs up underneath her and moves to stand, managing the new adventure in one unsteady movement. Once on her tiny hooves she trembles, unsure of herself, but she doesn’t fall. Acutely aware of how far this has placed her from Kensa, she edges one rear hoof backward and then the other until she brushes against her dam, her gaze never faltering as she watches the two strangers and their queer circlets of light.

they say that dreaming is free, but i wouldn’t care what it cost me
