    COTY

    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

Luck. He had heard that word once before, back in the meadow among two others. She had said they were lucky, the three, lucky to have found each other. Fart did not believe it then, could not even wrap his head around the possibility but now, now he could fathom it, could entertain the idea. The touch was foreign to him, he rarely was so intimately close to anything and when he was well, he wasn’t proud of how or why. Yet she had done so freely, without coaxing, without request. It was the softest of touches, kind, just like Grumble had given to him once upon a time. It was nice this, even as brief as it was, it reminded him of a pleasant time, even if the good was short lived- just as the caress was. Nevermind that though, he was not a greedy being and he held that tingle in his mind for as long as he could after.

The she went even further with her bag of surprises, she said yes. Yes. To him, to a safe place, to a somewhere in which they could find company in each other and sanctuary from those that meant them ill. She said yes to sharing the world with him, even if that meant a small slice of the big picture. He smiled then, warmer and broader than he had in some time, even if the display was sort of goofy on his split face. This had to be one of those kind girls he had heard about, one of the nice ones. Never had he expected to actually meant another one, let alone be taken up on an offer of making a herd. That’s what it was, what it boiled down to in all technicality- a herd. Course he had to do the finding and the inviting and just until recently the thought had never even occurred to him. Who would want to herd with Fart anyways?

That’s all over now, that worry, at least for today. That first step had been taken and now it was simply up to him to find them a good spot. There is one he knows of, a good place, a nice place, a quiet one. It was near the Kingdom of the Falls, a lush foresty place with tall pine trees and a few others intermingled throughout. Fart thought the pine would help the smell, his smell, and of course it was quiet and cool. Plenty of shade and cover from the elements, fresh water to drink, it was as good as any place. Somehow or another he had brought her there, to show her, to see what she thought of it. He took his time in the leading, several times afraid that she might change her mind and he would be hoofing it to the forest on his own. It’s only when he reached the borders of the unclaimed territory that he really felt relief, offering it to her with a sense of pride. “This is uhh, the forest I was talking about. Do you like it? What do you think Seraphina?”

His muddy brown eyes had taken on a bit of shine since their departure from the meadow, likely from his new feeling of accomplishment. He really hoped he had picked a good spot, hoped that she would like it and would stay. Course he wouldn’t make her stay, not if she didn’t want to, he didn’t want her to feel trapped with him by any means. “It’s a nice place for those who need a home, things people don’t want around, things like me. That’s what I’d like to do I think, offer a home to mares who have nowhere to go, who need some kindness just like I do.” It was a rather deep share that, and he felt almost a bit silly for saying it out loud, but it was the truth.

take these broken wings and learn to fly

Kind. No one would have ever used that word to describe her in the past. Well, maybe one, but she had disappeared long ago along with whatever love she had held for the hawk mare. Not that it would have mattered much to Sera - the love would not have been reciprocated. But to be loved, perhaps it would have changed her.

There’s no way of telling now, only moving forward.

And that she does, following her green companion into the heart of Beqanna. She passes so many familiar places on their journey… so many memories. She wonders if it is like this for him as well. Do places, smells, sounds, faces… do they cause pain for everyone like they do for her? It seems that he has a past as well, something painful that consumes him, but what was it?

There was time to ponder such things as they walked, but she was sure to put on a reassuring smile each time he looked back to check on her. She was glad that he did not insist on conversing the entire way there as she was lost in her own thoughts. What was she doing? She could almost hear her old self mocking her now. A herd mare? She had been a proud Amazonian warrior… and now this?

She shakes her feathered head at this. She was doing nothing that she didn’t want to do. Where else would she go anyway? The jungle was sure to reject her and the only other home she had known was the gates but that had been so, so long ago. And there were things that had happened there that she never have happened - going there would only rip open well healed scars.

Before she has a chance to finish her thoughts he has stopped and is speaking. She snaps out of her funk to listen, ears pushed forward to catch his words. She looks around, for the first time really noticing where her feet and the stallion had led her. It was nice, definitely had everything they could need. But it wasn’t a jungle, and so she knows it will never truly feel like home to her. She does not say this, though. She puts it from her mind and simply enjoys the scenery for what it is. She looks at her friend, who is obviously pleased, and smiles. It was nice to see him genuinely happy.

“It’s nice. You picked a good place. I’ve always been most comfortable around trees.” She adds the last part as more of a side note to herself. You would think with wings you would want a wide open place, but no, she would take the shelter of trees any day.

He continues his speech about belonging and not belonging. He has big plans, and she feels somewhat upset with herself for not expecting that of him. Actually, she isn’t sure what she expected of him. But she sees the kindness in his eyes and she appreciates that about him. She hopes he will stay that - keep that genuine smile on his split lips forever.

There was nothing that she would fight for right now, maybe her own life; but she thinks that maybe this, this man and his simple dream… well maybe they are worth protecting too. She becomes serious now, smile fading. Her eyes find his. “I promise you that I will protect this place and whoever you may find to inhabit it.” She had broken vows in the past, but this was different. For the first time in her long life, she was doing something simply because she wanted to.

It’s not too wordy their travels, just as well. Fart was still getting comfortable with the whole conversation thing, especially the whole conversation with ladies thing. Seraphina was nice though and not especially difficult to talk to when it came right down to it. Mostly it was just the roan’s own insecurities that gave him a hard time about holding together the exchanging of words. Sometimes he thought too hard on the topic, other times too little and even still he took things too literally and ended up kicking himself down a notch each time. This though, this wasn’t too bad and when he finally did stop she did the same, even if a bit distracted but he couldn’t hold that against her. Especially given the bouts of silence in between the walking, she had to do something to occupy her thoughts right?

The air is nice here, cool and calm and it even does something to dissipate the acrid smell that lingered against his limey coat. That was probably the selling point, even for Fart. Would that he could have found a nice field of potent wildflowers for them all to stay in but that wasn’t practical or safe really. It would be a nice thing to have of course but would likely not provide needed shelter and then it also wouldn't guarantee a source of water so really it was out. Who’s to say the woods wasn’t hiding a nice little spot of flowers, a clearing with a meadow and all that jazz, There was still much of the unclaimed land that Fart had not explored, partially because he wasn’t sure of the wildlife and he wasn’t dense enough to go wandering into a den unassisted.

It’s nice, she says and he is glad to hear it, especially the part where she liked trees best. He couldn’t help but be a little proud of himself, nodding as she lets that be known. “I am happy you like it, even happier you like the trees so much. I think they are nice too,” He would have said ‘and they help with the smell’ but he didn’t, he was trying so hard to be positive.

Then she goes on to say how she will protect this land and if Fart was a woman his heart would have melted right out of his chest, maybe deep down he was sort of sappy like that, woman or not. “You will?” he asks a bit surprised and confused. “Oh Seraphina I’m so happy you will but don’t worry you don’t have to do all that, I think, isn’t it better if we work together?” He didn’t want her to think him incapable, even if he wasn’t so sure about his own abilities, even if they had not been truly tested in these lands. Given enough time, enough encouragement he might be able to do just that, to protect them and their home, he would have to try. “We can, we can protect it and those that need somewhere to go. It’s nothing fancy, there’s no glory or titles to be had here but it will be ours, it will be our own. That’s something to take pride in right?”

Maybe he leaned on her too much, maybe on himself too little but he liked Seraphina and he liked this place. Hopefully they would both like it enough to stay.
