    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

    What... Happened?
    #1
All she could remember was a light. She didn't know what it had meant at first. It surrounded her home, the place called the Falls, like the loving embrace of a dam to her foal. But there had been something ominous about this light. Raxa had gotten a bad feeling as the kingdom was swallowed by it. She heard a couple of cries of fear, obviously some horses who had become trapped. A few she recognized... Anahi, Nitika... Nerius... Eiria... and others. Then, the brindled mare had been swallowed by the light, her vision going dark within seconds.

She didn't know how long she had been asleep for, only that, when she finally awoke, her belly was quite cold. With a loud, pained groan, the brindled mare woke, her electric blue eyes slowly opening as she tried to adjust. Her eyes still ached from the brightness. Still trying to figure out what happened, the mare, despite her aching limbs, rolled up from her position of laying on her side, and heaved herself so she was now lying on her belly.

She lifted her tired head, looking around. She couldn't really see much; hell, she couldn't even tell where she was. There was a thin layer of fog surrounding her, thin enough that she could make out what was around her, but that she didn't recognize it. Where was she? What had happened that day after she finished...

Wait, what had she been doing? That was strange; she couldn't remember what had happened before-

Beqanna... the lands... she'd felt it in her bones. The land was changing; it was angry. She could feel the earth quaking beneath her hooves before everything changed, though she couldn't remember exactly how it had happened. Only that she was out doing something she figured was important enough to ignore the foal growing in her belly, or else she wouldn't have been doing something that dangerous.

Stretching out her front legs, the brindled mare threw her weight forward, extending her front legs some to support the weight. Moving her back legs so that they were now under her, the mare successfully got to her hooves, albeit a bit painfully since she was still sore. Her belly was still cold, and looking down, she could now see why. She'd been lying on a bed of grass still wet with dew, something that, for some reason, made her feel uneasy.

Every bone in her body told her something wasn't right... she just didn't know what it was. The mare took a couple of steps forward, looking around carefully for anything that might identify where she was. She was so busy doing that, she almost missed what happened next.

Without warning, the ground beneath her front hoof disappeared. The mare reared in shock, using her hind legs to take a step back so that she wouldn't go tumbling forward. Once she was safe, Raxa stretched out her neck, trying to see what had happened.

By the gods... it was a cliff!

Taking another step closer, Raxa looked out over the edge; it was quite a long way down. Thanking every or any deity that had watched over her so she hadn't gone over the side, the mare's thoughts drifted to the little one growing inside her before realizing what was going on.

She still couldn't see too well past the mist, but she could tell something; she was on top of a mountain. The lands around her, from what she could see, looked incredibly different. Still, something told her it was her home, no matter what.

Beqanna... what had happened to it? How much had it changed?

The mare suddenly grew very worried for her friends, her comrades in battle. She turned around and began walking again, calling out a couple of their names to see who responded.

"Jedi?! Sunfall?! Nitika?! Anahi?! Anyone?" she called out, worried she would not hear any replies.

What happened to Beqanna? The painted stallion woke up and Beqanna was not the same! He shook his body which was tight from what seemed like a never ending slumber. His muscles relaxed and moved forward only to find out he was standing on a mountain.

His eyes popped open, where in the world is he, and where is the Falls? He has belonged to the kingdom for years, without the Falls what would he do? WHERE WAS SUNFALL AND RAXA! The two were carrying his foals, he needed to know they were safe!

There was so much going through his mind, he looked over the edge and saw a few equines gathering at the bottom of the hill, his next question was how does he get down there? Before he could decide a way down he heard his name be called, in fact he heard the Falls members names be called. The voice registered and it was Raxa!

He shot a whinny from his maw and carefully raced towards her Raxa his voice was gentle as he reached her, gently nuzzling her shoulder. Are you okay? he asks as he trails his maw along her engorged stomach. Of course he cared for Raxa but all he could think about was Sunfall, where was she? He hoped she was safe, he was freaking out inside but hid his emotions. Raxa and Sunfall still didn’t know about the fact that Jedi is fathering both there foals, but it looked like today would be the day they find out, if he can find Sunfall that is.

That whinny... it was familiar... no doubt in her mind, it was Jedi. The brindled mare turned around, seeing the paint stallion racing towards her, a frantic look in his eye. Clearly, he was just as troubled by all this as she was, if not even more so. The mare whinnied in greeting, and happiness, as Jedi came up to her, nuzzling her shoulder before running his muzzle down her stomach, where the little one grew.

Hearing him ask if she was okay, Raxa simply nodded, nuzzling the base of his neck, "I'm okay... and so is the little one..." she said, glancing down at her belly for a moment.

She turned to look at Jedi again, "Have you seen any of the others? I've been calling for our friends but I haven't been able to find them yet."

It was a relief to hear Raxa and the foal were okay, he force a small smile on his face but it quickly faded away. He turned his body to look over the mountain once again, he could not find Sunfall in the crowd below and was starting to become overwhelmed with worry. He turned back to look at Raxa when she Asked if he had seen the others no he shook his head. I think we need to go to the bottom of the mountain he said as he looked below again It appears everyone is gathering down there

He moved away looking for a way down, it would be risky to move such a pregnant mare, but they would need to get to the bottom to find the others. We should wait for Sunfall though he announced, he was only trying to make this trip once, since he didn’t see Sunfall below he decided to wait and escort both her and Raxa together at the same time.

The grullo mare tried to remember what she was doing yesterday, and it all seemed so fuzzy. She forgot when she and Jedi had finally officially reached mate status, only that they had sometime in the recent past. Before the last breeding season.. When was that? She couldn't remember. She paused in her limping, shook her head, before gulping the thin air into her lungs as her time ran out slowly, she could nearly hear the clock clicking. She heard voices, limped towards them, started to recognize Jedi's voice. her swollen belly moved as a foal inside her kicked, starting to move about as the time neared for them to meet the new lands. "Jedi..? Raxa..? Is it you?" She calls quietly through the fog, the mist, nearly blinding as it reflected the bright sunlight while they still remained high up. She heard him say something about waiting for her and felt emotions rush through her just as she misstepped, falling to her knees and having to stop and breath for a moment before standing up again. She moved close enough to be able to see them, and see down below. A few - or many, she needed to be honest with herself now - drops appeared the only way down in multiple - truly, nearly all - areas of the mountain.. How would she safely get down? She snorted loudly as she contemplated this, flicking an ear back as new noises overwhelmed her.

Raxa nodded, "Agreed. It seems that is where everyone is gathering; hopefully we will encounter Kreios and the others, so we know they are safe."

When the stallion also mentioned that the two of them should wait for his student, Sunfall, Raxa gave another nod, showing that she knew he had the right idea in mind. With that mare as heavily pregnant as she was, it wouldn't be good for her to make the journey down the mountain alone. Even with Raxa and her current state, the brindled mare was sure-hooves and quick, skills she'd developed from her time living among mountains when she abandoned her home herd.

The duo didn't have to wait long; after a couple of minutes, another horse came galloping up. The grulla form of Sunfall was easy to recognize. Raxa was glad that her fellow comrade was safe, not appearing to have any injuries on her. The mare called out, asking if it really was Jedi and Raxa.

The brindled mare chuckled before trotting to meet Sunfall halfway. She smiled at the young warrior-in-training, "I am glad that you and the little one are safe," she noted.

It was not long after he spoke that Sunfall appeared, he lounged towards her but stopped remembering Raxa was there as well. Golly, he really got himself into a predicament, it would be best to announce he was fathering them both at the bottom of the mountain, he knew Raxa would not accept his help down the mountain if she knew before. Sunfall his voice was full of relief I’m glad you are here now, are you harmed? he asked, equally as worried for her as Raxa.

We should head down He announces, as he stepped closer to the edge of the mountain. It will be a long travel, but together it will be fine, we should start now. he was demanding but the less they talked, the less likely to bring up the father of their foals. He nudged Sunfall towards the edge of the mountain, looking over to Raxa as well.

Raxa already knew that Jedi had a point; if they wanted to reach the base of the mountain before nightfall, the trio had to leave now. Sunfall looked to be in heavier condition than Raxa, despite both of them being very pregnant. The brindled mare was more sure-hooved, so she was more likely to keep steady if she slipped. If Sunfall lost her balance, Jedi and Raxa would be there to support her.

Praying to every deity she knew to keep her foal and her friends safe, Raxa walked over to where a well-worn path led down the mountain. Seeing some hoof print indentations, likely the paths others had used to go down, Raxa followed them carefully. If this many horses had made it down before them, and the mountain trail hadn't given out, perhaps sticking to the path the others had taken would help keep them safe.

As she descended, she called back to Jedi and Sunfall, "Follow the hoof steps of the other horses; they've marked a safe path despite the narrowness of the trail. You'll be safe if you stick to the paths and keep your eyes in front of you so you see where you're going."

Nodding once towards Raxa respectfully as she starts forward, she looks down over the edge as Jedi nudges her forward gently. She looks at Jedi and coughs slightly, the thin air taking a toll on her breathing capabilities as she works to not limp as she moves. "I have a cut across the front and outside edge of my upper left hind leg, but that's it. I woke up somewhere nearby on a small pile of sharp rocks and was cut as I stood up. It's nothing too serious though, it will heal fine." She says strongly, hoping he believes her words better than she does. She stands on all four legs, trying not to show how uneasy she is as they move forward and down the mountain on the narrow path Raxa located. "Raxa, this path looks like one of the better ones around here. Thank you." She said to the brindled mare quietly, a flick of both ears forward showing how happy she is to be with fellow Falls members she knows and trusts.

Raxa did not look back, knowing how dangerous it was to let her gaze falter from the path in front of her. The mare had to remain focused; she didn't want to be rude by thinking this, but out of the three of them, Sunfall was the most nervous, even if Raxa was pregnant herself. The brindled mare had learned to keep calm in the most dangerous of situations, even though her flight instincts said otherwise.

At times, she would run if she knew the fight wasn't worth it. But, well, this wasn't exactly a fight, now was it? If Raxa started showing signs of nervousness, then Sunfall would pick up on that. She might start to panic, and that would put not only her life in danger, but the little one as well.

So, for the sake of the pregnant mare, Raxa would fight her instincts, and remain calm. She continued to carefully pick her way down, following the path set for them by the other horses. Everything was going fine for a while, until she came around a small bend in the path. Her senses told her something wasn't right; danger was nearby. And not the kind that possessed large claws on each paw or fangs as white as the winter snow.

No, this danger was much different, but dangerous just the same. Raxa's eyes scanned in front of her, spotting something strange on the path. She took a step forward, and immediately wished she hadn't. A piece of the path began to crack under the pressure of her weight, and she followed it, watching with wide eyes as a piece of the edge of the path broke off and tumbled down the mountainside.

Snorting with frustration, and anger at having to face a new challenge, Raxa turned her head around to look at Jedi and Sunfall, "There's a part of the path down here that's starting to break. Keep away from the edge; get as close to the side of the mountain as you can so your weight won't cause the earth to crack anymore," she explained.

The mare took her own advice, wedging her body against the side of the mountain. Her breathing was quick as she kept an eye on the path as well as the part that was breaking. She could feel it shake under her hooves a little, but by the time she got across, the path was still stable enough that it would hold the weight of Jedi and Sunfall.

When Raxa reached the part of the path past the cracking edge, it widened out a bit so that she could turn around to look at her friends. With a calm voice, she called up to them, "Take it one at a time. Keep looking forward, focus on where you're going, and keep as close to the wall as you can."
