    COTY

    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

It’s so sweet, tantalizing, and Nayl watches with flashing eyes as Naga pivots and immediately turns her back to the group to begin the climb up the mountain. A sparing glance sweeps across the Amazons faces before Nayl heaves a sigh and turns to follow Naga. Her heart thuds in anticipation for a home again, but it also trembles painfully at having lost the Jungle. Thickly running in her blood is generations of fierce Amazons who have always dedicated their lives to its strength and prosperity. To have their home stripped from them is like eradicating everything Nayl is created by; all her ancestors are now gone as are their spirits and tombs.

Uncertainty chokes her at first as she walks just a few feet behind the self-proclaimed leader, watching her every step as though waiting for her to tumble and fall. Nayl, so mistrusting and brash, bites her tongue often in these hours because she knows time may ease her rigid heart. Perhaps as the seasons pass Nayl will learn to enjoy Naga’s company, but in this moment, she grimaces at the idea of being herded like a lamb and bending her knee to a stranger.

Their trek is long and tiresome. The rocky paths have been obviously trampled before them, but still the path is treacherous. Nayl periodically glances toward the rocky ledge where a deep plunge separates them all from death. She grimaces. When she hears Naga exclaim about the magic returning upon reaching the mountain Nayl only nods. Her lips are pursed shut, her eyes vigilant. She can feel her mind opening again and for a fleeting moment she reaches toward a rock and bring it to life from a nestled standstill. It tumbles in front of her then down the ledge. A shadow of a smile slips across her lips, but it disappears when she blinks her eyes and stares ahead. She won’t use her powers here, not when they are petitioning; it would just make her feel like she’s taking advantage and gloating her strengths. Beqanna is already angry so why pester her more by utilizing her god-given abilities? Naga has a different perspective, however, as she shifts into a panther and treads on. When she offers a pause to rest Nayl just keeps walking like a machine.

The air is thin and it claws at her, but she tries to adjust her exertion and her pace to accommodate the breathing. Even then it’s difficult but still feasible. She doesn’t stop until they’ve reached their destination. Quietly, the girl listens but never adds. Nayl is merely here to show Beqanna that they are unified in their desire to revive the Amazons, that their hearts lie with their Jungle and their sisterhood, that they realize their mistakes and wish to learn from them, together.
