    COTY

    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

now you're staring at a queen.
They had been summoned -- up the Mountain, once again, though the journey this time was much easier. And then the oceans parted, and the new land opened up before them.

    Their Island.
    Ischia.

It was fitting, really, that Beqanna had given Ea an island. She was perpetually alone -- even at her peak, when she’d had the kingdom and Ramiel and the children, she’d always felt alone. But, as she takes her first steps onto the beach -- not the beach whose sand smelled of stale death, but their beach, that smells like fresh greenery and clean sand -- she finally breathes a sigh of relief.
For a moment, she forgets about Ramiel and Sela and Kha, forgets about how she sleeps alone now, cold from the harsh winter instead of curled up with their warmth.
She still has Sabrael. She still has Tiphon and Phaedrus and Ashley.
    And now, she has Ischia.

Ea looks around and spots a few of the others that had been brought in by Beqanna. She moves closer to them, and lets out a call for the others that remain. As they begin to gather, she addresses them.
“Hello all, many of you know me but for those who don’t, I am Ea,” she begins. Once again, she has thrust herself into a leadership position -- it is where she is most comfortable.
“Welcome to our new land -- Ischia --” it is not the Dale, I know, but still beautiful, she almost says, but bites her tongue. “I would also like to introduce Tiphon, Ashley, and Phaedrus,” she pauses, nodding to each one, “we will all act as a council of sorts, though I will be overlooking everything. Beyond that, I would love to hear your ideas for our new home. Would anyone like to go first?”

The roar of the ocean is still in his ears.

He’d marveled at the path, the way the water had defied gravity but obeyed Beqanna to allow them passage across the sea.  Then and there, he had decided that it was worth it.  That the loss of the Dale had been one step backwards for two steps gained.  That paradise and the favor of the gods is well worth the price of admission.

Because as his young eyes find each new wonder of their new home, it is obvious that they have arrived.  He doesn’t see the sadness in his grandmother’s eyes or hear the melancholy words his grandfather shares with her.  He sees only the glimmer of the sea-sprayed sands, hears only the calls of native parrots.  He imagines what secrets they will find in the nooks and crannies of the island, what treasures Beqanna will have buried for them to discover over time.  He only wishes he wasn’t the only one young enough to make an adventure out of it.

Sabrael is about to sneak off from the rest of his family when his mother catches him with a look.  The bay roan colt wavers on the spot, cursing both the fading light and his inherent need to please and protect Ea.  But it is less easy to leave her side as of late (even if he should be growing more distant with age).  He spins on his heels and comes back to her, back to them all.  Not all, he thinks, as bitter as the salt air.  He has already looked over his dam’s shoulder for the storm-cloud grey of his sire and found turquoise-ocean instead.

When the waves crash back down over the path, he shakes once, violently.

Ea’s voice rises over the small gathering and soothes him.  Despite his young age, he is wise enough to realize that she needs her own leadership more than anyone.  He is infinitely glad that she has bent to the yoke of responsibility once again, that the others have allowed her to do so.  He can’t imagine if the world had taken everything from her at once.  “I know we had a peace and war caste before, but times have changed.”  He knows all about the old Dalean systems and ranks, has learned them since he was a child.  But he knows that this is a completely different world, a better world.  They need to evolve as the land has.

“Maybe we should all train together, since we are out here all alone?  Let everyone learn all of it, fighting and diplomacy and defense.”   His gold-tinged eyes flick from one face to another around him, wondering if they’ll agree, confident that he is right.  Inter-land relations will be difficult enough for them as it is, based on simple geography; they need to be more well-rounded than anywhere else.  The thought of learning how to fight from his grandfather and the mysterious Ashley warms him even more to the idea of becoming the ultimate student.  Perhaps he’ll simply be absent from the softer side of lessons.

Sounds good to me. I know I wasn't here for the foundations of the kingdom, but I am very much looking forward to pushing this forward :Smile

as far as Ashley being a Wiseman, what is his role within the kingdom, and do we want to have the wisemen do specific stuff, or just be "wise"?

we can still be totally flexible with the structure, so I am completely open to suggestions.

'wisemen' was just a random term - my idea for them is that the council + ea are all "in charge", ea's just kind of the deciding vote. I do like the idea of all of the castes doing at least basic training together, so maybe the council can be in charge of that training (we 4 can come up with games or whatever for everyone), and then pull people who show interest in certain castes to earn more individualized responsibilities. or you can just hang out and be wise. I'm cool with whatever.

maybe we should have a vote after x amount of BQ years to either keep the same leader/council or replace certain members? what do y'all think?

I have like a huge idea.. I wasn't here for the previous version of this kingdom (nobody was in it) but here goes.

There'd be four castes - war, defense, peacekeepers and spies. They'd each have similar stuff that comes close to their names.

War would be the troops that would go help allies. They'd train with defense - and sometimes spies - and have War-only spars where you fight in uneven groupings (ie. 2-on-3, 1-on-2, etc). They would not typically patrol.

Defense would be your home-base-warriors. The defense of the team, essentially; they would train with War and have some lessons from the spies for quickly and quietly moving and learning to listen for equine. They'd patrol daily (or near-daily) and if somebody knew showed up, escort them in if needed. Otherwise call for somebody to alert the ruler(s) and council.

Peacekeepers/Peacemakers.. They'd be the diplomats who go about working on forming alliances with powerful equine - rulers or not - for bettering the kingdom. They'd sometimes be accompanied by a War member if passing by/through hostile areas.

Spies would do exactly what a spy would do in human life.. Spy on hostile kingdoms/herds/etc.. Report back to those who are need-to-know.. You get it! They'd also help the Defense caste with learning to quietly patrol and listen for equine before they see your/before you see them.
