    COTY

    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

A New Home; Reagan, Ruan, Ava, Any
    #1

It was a big decision to leave their original haven. Tephra and Magnus served their family well. It wasn’t until Reagan’s friendship blossomed into family that Sahm and Newton decided to move. Ava and Emmalyn were still quite young. They depended upon their fathers in almost everyway so they would be joining their fathers in the move. Elora on the other hand was grown and was raised in Tephra alongside her friend Leola so her decision laid within her own hands. Thankfully Elora was equally as close to Reagan so she was likely to be within the Taiga quite often.

It was the morning of the move and collecting the dancing young fillies was quite a task. Newton could already tell that he was with child and it was to be another girl. They were definitely a blessed couple. But with the weight within his belly he wasn’t moving as quickly as Sahm. Sahm like always was very focused on Newton and his wellbeing. As Sahm watched their young daughters giggle and play he leaned into Newton. ”I know you’re nervous to leave, Newton.” He whispered in his ear, and placed a gentle kiss. ”This will be good for us.” Newton solemnly nodded before speaking up. ”Alright girls, time to go!”

Both Emma and Ava moaned and shuffled their hooves on the dust path. Once the fillies passed Newton he swung his muzzle down and placed a soft nip on Emma’s rump. ”Move along my beautiful Angels.”

Soon the four reached the border of Taiga and Sahm smiled, breathed in a deep breath, and happily matched eye contact with Newton. Newton smiled as well and softly rubbed his nose along Sahm’s neck. With magic Sahm sought out Reagan to notify her of their presence and location. Surely she would come greet them and let them know where they could place a homestead.

    Sahm. Newton.

They were like family and were greeted with warm eyes and a soft smile. Reagan would know of them already, and would most likely show up soon. It was not something that needed said; magicians had their ways. Ruan's blue gaze shifted to the girls, looking over them curiously. He hadn't met them yet, having seen Sahm, Newton, and Elora only briefly that day.

Hello, he said kindly. I'm Ruan. What are your names?

It felt like it had been so long since a little one was at his side. Heda was an adventurous girl and was often out and about with her sister Jinju. Iasan was an independent boy, doing things for himself as though he were not truly a child at all. Always with his mother's watchful eyes keeping track of him. And Terra; she was special to him. She had been a little feral when he'd found her, and had instantly settled herself within his heart. But she was not one to be paraded about as he did his daily, boring tasks.

It's good to see you have made it safely, he said, looking back to Sahm and Newton. Come, I am sure Reagan will join us soon. He smiled and turned to lead them further into the Taiga, glassy ice wings tucked to his purple-spotted sides.

    we’re on each other’s team…

Family was a funny thing. They always knew that despite being around, no matter what they were doing, they always had a home—whatever may come, that family would stand by them no matter whatever else would happen to them. Such was the case with Reagan’s family. Most of them were bound by nothing more than love, and yet, her pack was one that was ever strengthening. She had her daughters, and her son Iasan, and now their extended family would soon continue to grow with the birth of two more—her twins, her Saxony babies.

    And Sahm and Newton.

Her love and appreciation for them was ever amazing to her. Two such couples, ever so different, bound together by affection and magic. Jason’s magic had come to rest in the form of Sahm, and his soul had come to rest in Iasan. It was almost as if the old days were still upon them, and that the peace that reigned of the old days of Beqanna were floating between the trees.

But it was not to be.

A mere illusion, Reagan was grateful for whatever she could glean from them, learning forever that this life was fleeting and that she needed to be thankful for what she was given—Peace, protection, and love.

And so when her senses were pricked by the sensation that her boys had finally approached the borders with their daughters in tow, she follows Ruan in their wake, spying that he always asked after the children first. Ruan—such a great father. In love with the children. In love with family…

A true leader of a pack.

“Hello Sahm. Hello Newton,” she sayswarmly as she steps forward to nuzzle he and his partner, before turning back to her husband and smiling, placing a warm lipped kiss upon the side of his face. “And hello you,” she says to Ruan. “I know that its been many months, but I am glad to finally have you here. How did you find the journey?”

It was a strange feeling to leave the only home she had ever known, to look back on the cracks of bright molten magma, like veins of gleaming gold carved into the sides of the volcano, and know that she wouldn’t be seeing them again for a long time. That instead of steam hanging like ghosts over a hot spring, instead of wide open places, she would wake to a sky blotted out by a forest as ancient as her bloodline, to trees too wide to see past. It wasn’t that this change was bad though, it didn’t scare her to be faced with something new and unfamiliar, it was just that this would be the first change.

She turns to bump her nose against Emmalyn’s dark shoulder, those amber eyes round and soft with hesitant light. The closer it came to leaving, the more she became aware of the weight sitting like stone in her chest. She would miss the friends they had made – the healing twins and the older boy with the wings, would miss Magnus kind face if only because she had seen it nearly every day. But Newton calls them to him, calls them away from the place that had always been home, and Ava moves reluctantly to his side, pressing the delicate curve of her turquoise cheek against the slope of his roan shoulder. Only when Tephra is just a blur of steamy land in the distance does she pause and turn back and, in a whisper that is impossibly soft, says “goodbye.”

It doesn’t take long to reach Taiga, and Ava is silently delighted by how close it is in relation to Tephra. This knowledge is enough to ease loose that knot of homesickness where it sits heavy in her chest. When the four of them stop she is overcome by the immensity of the forest, by the girth of the trees and the thick bed of pine needles that feel strange and spongy underfoot. Unlike either of her fathers who have opted to wait respectfully at the edge of the land, Ava ducks beneath their chins and bounds forward, running the dark of her delicate nose along the knots of bark and sap in the nearest trees. She is in love with this place at once, quieted by the wisdom of the forest and the cloying odor of pine and musk and damp earth. It feels wild and quiet all at once, calling to the wanderlust in her young heart.

One, two, three strides deeper into the trees when a mottled stallion with ice wings materializes from the shadows of the deep woods. It is so unexpected to find someone staring back at her that the small turquoise weanling balks and scurries back to her fathers, tucking herself neatly into the crook of Newton’s chest until the thundering of her heart slowed. But when he appears again behind her, a grey mare in tow, she finds that there is only kindness in his face, only warmth in their eyes when they greet her family. This must be Reagan and Ruan. With soft, wide eyes the color of crushed gold, she eases out from beneath Newton’s chin, pressing closer to the strangers so that she can see them better. Then, with a voice like a bell, she says, “My name is Ava,” and, belatedly, “I think I love your forest.”
