"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

[Open] Dawn of a New Day...
    #1
Soon dawn crept up upon the lands and a faint twinkle of light reached the forest floor.  The canopy of leaves gave way little light as the breeze rattled their choke.  Her lids unveiled her dark orbs as crown rose to view the entrance.  It looked to be a nice day so her thoughts trailed to venturing further today accompanied by her brood.  Gaze fell to him as he still slept curled under her neck, pressed warmly to her breast.  Her muzzle tucked to brush across his feathered wings.  Wings he possesed because of his father.  His inky purple hue was darker than Kirin was but had he looked this way as a colt she was unsure.  She knew very little of the stallion atop the Mountain.  Also unsure of if he, or more likely his sirens, would come find them some day...

She shook the thoughts away as she nudged him awake then rose to her feet.  He quickly jumped up as she figured he would.  Raring to go once again.  Leading the way they emerged from the dark, dampness of the cave and into the drier air of Sylva.  As each day passed they grew warmer and longer.  From what she could tell the sun shone bright today.  Perfect day for a stroll deeper into the heart of the kingdom...

She hadn't seen many of the other residents nor any foals recently.  The thick forests provided abundant hiding for any who wished to remain unseen.  So she didn't seek the others out.  If they wished to convers they would.  She moved at a steady pace weaving through the mangle of brush and tree.  He followed her more closely as it was an unfamiliar course and direction.  Straying little from her heels.  Overhead the Raven bounced from one limb to the next.  Vocalizing it's hate for the rough travels.  Flight was not easy here...

Soon they were upon the scarce break in the canopy.  Where the grass grew easily.  Relieved of the dark shadows cast upon the remainder of the lands.  The sun was nearing mid-sky now and warming quite nicely.  Stepping into its brilliance the rays absorbed into her dark coat warming her core quickly.  Orbs glanced down to see her little ones reaction as he stopped at her side by her shoulder.  Wide eyed stare looked out across the meadow.  She grinned with half a chuckle.  Lowering her muzzle she nudged him forwards and with a lunge she moved with a collective dance.  He gathered himself and lunged forward as well keeping pace with her.  Wings unraveled as he flapped them about happily.  She halted near the middle of the meadow, crown held high as she surveyed the area.  Everything seemed as it should so she lowered her muzzle to the rich greens.  He galloped in circles around her, kicking out with hind limbs playfully...

Lost in dreams once again he finds himself in a field of yellow poppies. Not any older than he was now.  The rolling hills beamed with life of all kinds.  The ever present Raven took to the skies playing games it seemed with the smaller song birds.  A family of deer scattered along the tree line.  Skittish little creatures popped in and out of hiding places.  He stood proudly atop the tallest of the hills.  Warm breeze fanned his feathers open...
A nudge was felt bringing him back to him laying next to his mother in the cold damp cave.  He lifted his head watching her stand.  Careful not to step on him.  She didn't say stay so he jumped to his feet.  Prancing fancy at her side.  Stepping into the forest she headed in the opposite direction they usually traveled.  He halted in confusion.  Hazel orbs looked into the direction of the creek then back to her still walking away.  Small snort rose from deep in his tiny chest as forelimbs reached forward.  Quickly reaching her heels he kept pace.  A rustle in the treetops caught his attention.  The Raven leapt from one branch to the next.  He eyed it curiously, smiling slightly at its familiarity.  Always ever present wherever the young colt was...
It had been a tiring journey but his muscles grew stronger with each day.  Peering ahead he could see a brightness he had never really seen before.  The darkness of the cave and forest was all he has really known.  As they neared the edge of the treeline he stopped abruptly still within the shadows.  Muzzle lowered to the divide of light and dark.  Would it hurt? Suddenly he felt a nudge as she lunged forward into the light.  He spooked slightly, forelimbs raised collectively as hind limbs launched him forwards.  Jumping into the sunlight as though he had to.  He followed still unsure of what to think.  She led them through the rolling hills and to the top of the highest hill.  As they came to rest he glanced up at her as she scanned the area.  His own orbs shifted to follow her gaze.  It was as if his dream had come to life before him.  The rolling hills of yellow poppies, the deer, the critters, all was before him now.  He crown lifted proudly as lids closed.  The warm breeze fanning his wings open...

Very little in her life had purpose until recently.  The last few years were a blur of hatred for anything that breathed.  As she watched this new naive life she wondered if he knew what was in store for him.  That he had a grander purpose.  His life now was simple but soon it would all crumble.  She looked to him as his wings opened.  As he enjoyed the warm breeze in his face.  Her focus shifted to searching the lands.  An urge to go to the Field overcame her need to stay here.  Hmmm where was he hiding... A soft whisper escaped her lips,

    Stillwater...

Syllables drawn out softly upon the breeze.  If his name upon her tongue didn't draw him out surely her scent would. Looking up to the sky the Raven glided on the air currents. The Raven tucked his wings back and plunged from the heights.  Swiftly disappearing into the dark shadows of the forest...

He woke up groggy, bleary-eyed and thick-headed. No matter how he blinked, it wouldn't clear the cloudy haze over his eyes or the splitting headache piercing his head like a metal spike. He wasn't sure how long he huddled deep in his cave waiting for it all to right itself. He may have fallen back asleep at some point.

When he finally crawled out to the world, his muscles had to stretch and warm back into movement. It didn't take all that long, thankfully, but it had been damned uncomfortable. The pain in his skull lingered, though, and he kept to the darkest parts of the forest as he skirted the lake. When he would normally just rest at the water, he instead took a path with no direction, no destination in mind. His body guided him, perhaps his nose had as well when he realized what he was trailing. Who he was trailing.

He paused at the edge of the private meadow tucked away in Sylva, shaded in the trees. The sun's brightness here made him reluctant to break out of that shelter. He'd always been a creature of night, even in Nerine. He'd lounged in his darkness there, until night fell over the land, and then he'd make his way to food where the moonlight kissed him. He decided he much liked Sylva after all, with its endless night beneath the thick forest. He could come out at any time he wanted.

    Oh, well.

His eyes adjusted to the light and he moved steadily forward.
Karaugh, he greeted smoothly with a rakish grin and a mischievous twinkle in his dark eyes. You look ravishing, as always. He winked and glanced to the child. Dark purple and winged. Why must it have wings. He withheld his dismay, masked it behind a smile that faltered in uncertainty.

You haven't brought him to meet me yet. Could I do so now? he asked softly, placing himself at her side where they could watch the boy. He should know who he is sworn to protect, after all, but he had hoped she'd bring him by herself. Maybe she didn't want him around her child. Maybe even now he was offending her by being here.

Here in the quiet meadow of Sylva the suffocating canopy gave way enough to let the midday rays nourish the vegetation.  Not being much of one for the light, forever a shadow drifter, she sought out the location not for herself but for her son.  The clearing would be needed for him to learn flight.  Plus what foal does not love a sunshiny meadow to play in.  Watching him prance about, stroking his wings... happily.  Wasn't that what a loving mother does?  Ha Like she'd know.  Her own mother was hardly loving.  Surely any maternal instincts she possessed were just instincts or inherited from her Father.

Standing atop the highest hill she waited... And waited... Her thoughts drifted here and there but finally his scent drifted nearer upon the winds.  A pleased smirk crossed her lips.  Caw! The Raven called from his perch within the shadows.  Always eager to alarm all within range of potential danger.  This scent approaching didn't concern her though.  It was rather quite welcome.  Soon enough the dark figure appeared at the divide of light and dark.  Without much hesitation he crossed over.  Her gaze falling upon his glossy black sun kissed coat.  Not a usual sight but it wasn't unfitting in the least.  He looked rather handsome in the sunshine.  His words of flattery fed her slight ego.

You mean delicious, wink tossed his way as he came to her side.  Attention diverted to her spawn in question.  He had wandered a bit.  Exploring this new world.  So she called to him in a whicker.  Without delay he came as called.  Unaware immediately of the other that had joined his mother.  Slight confusion twisted his features but still he came to her.  Standing before them now... Waiting...

Klaudius, this is Stillwater.  He will be keeping an eye on you while I am away.  Not having really asked if he would watch him she glanced to catch the stallions reaction.  He had given her no reason not to trust him.  Even with this much respondsibility.  Her words flowed smoothly to him,

I trust you will keep him safe.  I will return soon. Gaze searched him for a rejection of her request. Finding none of concern she pressed gently to his shoulder with hers.  Their bodies embraced once again the warmth of one another.  How she longed for that feeling again.  But another fleeting moment it was as she pulled away to near the child still before them.
Words whispered softely for him to stay with the black stallion until she returned. Muzzle brushed across his fluffy mane as she stepped forward towards the East tree line.  Ebony daggers carried her effortlessly across the meadows hills.  Sun dipped lower now kissing the western horizon behind her.  Halting briefly to look upon the two figures she left.  She turned back as another step faded her figure within the shadows.

The Raven did not follow her this time.  He stayed perched silently, watching curiously the inky hued colt.  Perhaps waiting for him to return to the darkness.

As he stared across the vast plain before him his thoughts wandered.  Following in suit was his hooves.  A flower here.. A insect there... Smell this, taste that... Ick! That tasted like dirt.  Tiny crown thrusted upward as he shook the disturbing taste from his tongue.  Wait... What was that? Mother? He hadn't needed to look back as he heard her call to him.  No words needed either.  He half reared playfully as he twisted his body back towards where he had wandered from.  Hazel orbs not really paying attention as he bucked about.  Closer than he realized he was before her in no time.  Before them? Crown cocked in confusion as he looked upon the dark one quickly then held his mother's gaze.  An introduction but he didn't grasp the reason until she was whispering to him.  To stay... Stay? With him? What if he eats me? Why? Where?  His mind was a highway of questions but all he could do was stand before them frozen. Still as he felt her velvet muzzle upon his neck.  Still as she walked away and out of sight.  He wanted to rebel.  To run to her side.  She said stay so he stayed...

A tiny lump caught within his throat as he mustered the courage to look up.  Hazel orbs peered up as a tiny smile forced onto his maw.  He swallowed hard forcing the lump to subside.  A quick word was all that was found,

    Hello

"You mean delicious," she countered with a wink. He chuckled, both their attention turning to her boy.

She introduced them, offering him up to babysit in the same breath. He ignored the annoyance and dismay as it settled hard and cold in his gut, turning his charming smile to Klaudius. He didn't really like children. Too rambunctious, too loud. Fairly tasty though. His grin widened.

    Hello, Klaudius.

"I trust you will keep him safe. I will return soon." He only shrugged indifferently in response. Klaudius would be safe with him, thanks to a vow he'd made in exchange for her services. Diplomacy was her thing; he hoped she was as skilled in it as she implied. It was her time to prove herself if she ever wanted to rise in power.

He didn't much like power, himself. Too much attention, too many eyes. He was a death in the shadows sort, he supposed, though running this land with -for- Djinni was surprisingly nice. Sylva was a quiet place, and perhaps the locals were growing to trust in his protection. Well, except that dead one.

Karaugh left them and the boy looked hesitantly up at him. A fragile little smile tried to press to his purple lips as he forced out a weak, "Hello." He tilted his head curiously as he peered down at the child, smile never dimming. The colt was not used to anyone but his mother, perhaps. Stillwater was not known to be frightening, his mere presence could be soothing. It was the manner of the beast; trustworthy, luring, attractive.

He broke their stare with a turn of his head, looking out at the sunny little meadow. I'm not used to children, he admitted honestly, opening up himself in hopes to ease the boy's reluctance to stay with him. You don't seem all that bad though, he teased lightly.

I suppose you are too little to fly just yet, hm? Are you excited to someday?

Thoughts drifted to where his mother had disappeared into the thick brush.  His gaze trailed into the same direction for a moment.  Hardly making out the ebony figure lingering within the canopy shadows.  It was always watching, always waiting for him.  A constant, which was nice...

Attention was brought back sharply as the deep voice of his caretaker startled him.  Not that he was afraid, just not expecting it.  Looking up to him as he spoke.  Didn't like children? Oh nice choice mother... His brow furrowed.  He semi straightened to a more adult like pose.  Smallish head held high, ears cocked back in a cocky way.  He continued on, changing subject to his still useless wings.  Instantly his tough guy demeanour changed as he thought about one day being strong enough to soar through the skies.  He jigged excitedly in place as he extended his wings.

Too small?! Watch this!! With all the strength he could muster he flapped his wings as fast as they could flutter.  His feathers gripped the air with each stroke. His head tucked as his eyes closed giving it all he had.  Then for a few moments his hooves left the grassy hillside.  Eyes shot open as he felt the ground give way. He was hovering in place.  He had never actually accomplished leaving the ground before but he had something to prove this time. As he replanted himself onto land he looked up again to the dark stallion in satisfaction.  Smile wide across his lips.

Did you see that?!! He exclaimed proudly as he jigged in place.

The boy startled, perhaps as jumpy and flighty as the winged creatures he resembled, and he squared his shoulders and stood taller. Stillwater smiled carefully, the boy growing excited at his question and eager to prove his abilities.

"Watch this!" and the colt stirred up currents of wind, bird's appendages battering the air with the determination of a young boy. He seemed to concentrate more, his eyes sliding shut and wings laboring, and at last he was lifting above the ground. Hovering, levitating. His little eyes shot open, a wide grin proudly across his face and a bright light in his gaze. "Did you see that?!!"

Stillwater smiled too, indulgant, and nodded. That was impressive for one so young. You'll be soaring in no time, I'm sure. He couldn't fathom wanting to do such a thing himself, but it seemed of interest to ones with wings. The land, the water, was where he belonged. Never the skies. The skies were for stars, stars that were so elusive in this forest of darkness where the trees blocked out the sky. His head tilted.

Do you like it here, Klaudius? he asked, wondering if a child born here could know to miss the stars as much as he did. Do you like your home too, where you sleep with your mother? He knew she'd chosen a hollow in the ridgeline, but not which one precisely. His mother had also raised him in dark places, damp places, and he craved nothing different. Would Klaudius grow to seek the skies only at night then? Or would it not affect him so deeply as it had Stillwater.

Beaming with pride at his accomplishment he bounded about.  Wings tightly confirmed to his body.  He did not want to hurt them after all.  Lobes flickered about as the stallion praised him.

He soon tired and halted.  Crown raised he looked to the darkening skies.  The bright light was retreating from the land.  It was a rare sight for him to see.  The bright array of colors matching that of the Sylva forests.  He watched as the orange ball disappeared behind the canopy.  Darkness swept across the lands with a slight summer chill.  Fluffing up his feathers as it whirled about him...Them.  He looked to his caretaker and smiled.  The darkness was soothing and familiar.  Hazel gaze shifted as he thought of his mother.  They wandered back to the treeline in which she disappeared.  Stillwater asked a question of him which he only faintly heard over his thoughts.  If he liked it here and his home... Home! Surely mother would be there.  His attention shifted back to the stallions steele gaze upon him.  "Can we go home?" He hadn't quite answered the questions directly but he knew nothing else... The forest, the cave, the darkness was all he knew.

He looked to the western ridgeline.  If only he could fly he would be there in moments.  In his damp cave.  His mother always returned there at night so she would be there waiting for him he was certain.  His small frame rotated in the direction of which him and his mother entered the clearing.  Opposite of which she left it but he didn't register that as important.  The Raven, hidden within the shadows no more, swooped upon the pair.  Talons grasped for the black stallions forelock.  Klaudius watched, a chuckle surfacing. Silly bird. Then the ebony creature dove towards the path they must follow... Home.
