    COTY

    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

if there's a light at the end, it's just the sun in your eyes

Their journey from the den to Hyaline takes quite a few hours, but Amet is content to walk at the young filly's pace. His own fatigue is blatant as they meander down the mountain path at his home's border and towards the lake that is nestled in the center. The foliage is still dead, forlorn-looking as they move through gnarled boughs and fissures in the earth. The destruction from the Lost Boys' attack has not yet begun to fade, though Amet is pleased that the scent of a fresh burning has now disappeared with the wind, and he knows that Hyaline will begin to regrow itself in the spring.

As they reach the lake's edge, its waters still cloudy and gray with ash, the dragon king turns his amber eyes back to the young filly. He gives her a warm smile, something bordering on apologetic. "Welcome to Hyaline, little one. It will look even more beautiful in the spring, I promise." He sighs dejectedly before turning his gaze to the lakeside, where his favorite tree stands charred and dead.

Perhaps, he muses to himself hopefully, there is a magician in Beqanna who can bring life back to this place. He gives the seal brown filly a friendly nudge. "Would you like to explore?"

The dark child fell into step with the dragon stud, small legs bound and determined to set a pace that would be comfortable for him. The treck was long, Fiato often wondering where on earth they could be going, if this place was even on earth at all. She was saddened at the plants around them, the flowers mirroring the color of her dark mane, clinging to her as she walked through it. The stallion before her promised her that his home was beautiful, and she trusted him.

For it was clear the lands had been through a rough patch, much like she had in the weeks before. Her sadness lifted into a smile, ears pricked forward.

    " Its beautiful."

She spoke, voice strong for what felt like the first time ever. Brown eyes trained on the murky waters before them she grew excited, ready for the days when she would be able to play in them.

His next proposition was one she had been waiting for, did she want to explore? Heck yeah. Her head bobbed enthusiastically smile bright.

    face to the sun

Tangerine has been spending most of her time on the western side of Hyaline. Here, when the wind is blowing off the ocean she turns her back to the lake (and the burnt eastern perimeter) it is almost as if the fire had never happened.

But today, the wind comes from the east. The acidic scent is not as strong as it was in the fall, the land is healing itself, but it is still there. She has grown  used to things, this way, but still her heart is longing for spring and the new growth it will bring. But wind also brings her the scent of Amet… and a newcomer.

Quickly she moves to the more central part of Amet’s kingdom, and soon she sees them. She lets out a friendly whinny as she makes her approach at an easy lope.“It’s beautiful,”  she hears the filly say, and then Tang is beside them, reaching her muzzle out to the golden stallion before addressing the girl with a kind smile.

“Well, if you like this, you will love it in spring. I’m Tang, what's your name?” she speaks gently to the girl, curious about the circumstances which have brought her here. But Tang sees the excitement in the girl's eyes as she looks around her new home. Tang’s  smile turns playful before she lifts her head and looks back to the west.  “Have you ever seen the ocean?”

if there's a light at the end, it's just the sun in your eyes

There is a strange feeling in Amet's belly as he leads the young Fiato into Hyaline, its disarray greeting them in, perhaps, the most elegant way it can. The territory is still beautiful despite the new murkiness of the lake and the gray of the surrounding foliage. It still feels like home to the young dragon king, and he hopes that the seal brown filly will also grow to see it as such. Her young voice breaks the silence and he turns his gaze to her, pleased to see that she looks much livelier now than she had been in the den.

It's beautiful, she says, and Amet is instantly fond of her.

A friendly whinny draws his attention from Fiato and to the west, where Tang's painted frame has broken through the treeline. He smiles freely at the mare (he wonders, if ever, he will be able to hide his emotions around her) and returns her gentle touch of affection when she reaches him. His lips lightly tug at her mane before he recoils his leather-plated head and tucks his chin to his chest. "I was hoping you'd find us," he says to Tang, who he'd mentioned to Fiato back in the den. The overo mare had long ago proven herself an integral piece of Hyaline (more so than his own siblings), and if there is anyone within the borders of their beloved little valley that can assist him in creating the sanctuary he hopes it will be, it's Tang.

Fiato nods enthusiastically at his suggestion, drawing a smile from Amet. His golden ears twitch in their tousled bed as Tang adds to the idea, mentioning the ocean on Hyaline's western side that he had not visited himself in some time. In fact, the young stallion isn't sure if he'd ever taken the time to appreciate their shoreline or the briny ocean water beyond it. Pivoting his slender frame, the stallion's scales glisten brightly beneath the sun. Extending his neck and reaching his soft muzzle towards Fiato, the dragon king gives her a small wink and whispers in her ear, "I bet Tang would even be up for a game of tag on the way there, if we asked her nicely."

The girl was not at all startled by the presence that approached them, the painted mare gave off a wave of peace as she spoke with Amet. Fiato was dazzled, never before had she seen such a brightly colored pair! She smiled widely at the two, extending her muzzle to bump against the mare's chest.

She had called herself Tang, the name made the filly laugh. Had she called herself after the taste of fruit? No matter, the girl knew she would be friends with the both of them, she just had a feeling.

"My name is Fiato, and I have only ever seen this lake."

She replied, voice as light as the soft winds that brushed her mane despite the curiosity it held. Her head turned to the lake if the ocean was anything like it, she was sure she would love it too.

"I bet Tang would even be up for a game of tag on the way there if we asked her nicely."

The young fillies smile grew larger (if that was possible), with a tentative step forward she reached out to the painted mare. Muzzle bumping her shoulder lightly.

"would you like to play tag with us?"

She inquired, voice quiet as she awaited the mare's reply. Even if she didn't want to play, Fiato was still thrilled about going to see the ocean! It wasn't every day you get to go to three new places with two new friends!

Fiato’s smile contagious. Tang admires the way she is taking so much change in stride, adaptable and sweet - the way so many children are when young. It is good Amet found the girl before one of the more unsavory characters who roam Beqanna did.

She stands still for the filly’s gentle investigation of her scents only breaking her stillness to tenderly pull a twig from the child’s forelock. “Would you like to play tag with us?” Fiato asks, her voice full of innocence and hope. Tang feels a warmth in her chest that she has not felt in a while, the feeling reminds her of spending time with her little brother and their games upon the hills of their homeland.

This is what Hyaline was meant to be. As the thought crosses her mind her amber eyes glance up to Amet, sparkling with purpose.

But quickly she returns her attention to Fiato’s hazel eyes. “Oh, I would!” She says,  inching away from the filly before giving her a nudge on the shoulder. “But you will have to be it!” With a toss of her mane she trots to the west, planting a nip on Amet’s shoulder for good measure as she brushes past him on her way to the ocean.

if there's a light at the end, it's just the sun in your eyes

His glittering eyes lock with Tang's for the smallest of moments, but he can still see in her what he can feel growing within himself. Hyaline, the sanctuary. He smiles at the painted mare proudly as she preens the young Fiato, bringing a question to Amet's mind that he hadn't considered before: why hadn't Tang ever had children? He guesses it has something to do with her wanderlust and her unfaltering free spirit. Children would mean that she need to remain in one place, anchored there no matter how she feels about the situation.

He knows it's not the time to pry, not when they have this bright-eyed girl to entertain, and so the dragon King tucks his question away for later and takes off after Tang with a skip in his step and their laughter on the wind. He looks over his plated shoulder, searching for the seal brown filly, trying to evade her playfully should she chase after him at all. The Akhal-Teke tosses his narrow head happily and, gleaming beneath the sunshine, streaks through the trees before looping back around and behind the pair, watching them lovingly with his bright amber eyes. There is a warmth in his chest that had been missing ever since the fire.

"You're not gunna let her get away from you, are you, Fiato?!" the dragon King calls to her, his speed increasing again to see if he can find a way to corner Tang into being tagged by the young filly.
