    COTY

    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

the incense that sun on prairie offers to sky
Snow falls, but it melts before it even hits the ground.
Spark is not surprised by this, she has chosen to stand close beneath the volcano’s smoldering cone that still spouts enough ash to mix with the wind, and now the snow. It is only the ash that lands soft as a kiss on her pale back. The ash smudges her skin, less striking against the paleness of her until bits of it streak the black bonnet on her brow and the black shield-shaped patch on her breast. Her mismatched eyes peer through the miasma that is thick and familiar to the Tephran landscape as it is to her, a haze that hangs thick in the air and does not bother her as it might some.

She has chosen to be alone over here, without her twin who is no doubt being run ragged by his own set of twins who have discovered their ability to shift shape into two little rambunctious black panthers that climb and claw all over one another. Just thinking about those two and their impish antics is enough to bring a smile to her face but it is a little sad at the corners, just starting to droop because another season has gone by and Spark has no foal of her own. She ought to have had a foal of her own by now but no, she is left to stand back and watch as those that she loves with all her heart have little ones of their own.

Spark knows that she must stop thinking these thoughts. They are no good for her. Not as much as the telling of her besmirched love for another had been. It had felt good to lighten the burden just the tiniest bit by talking to Ledger. The flaxen chestnut stallion had proven to be a good listener and she could not help but feel something for him, something inexplicable that kept her even from him now, in this moment. Because Spark did not know herself any better than she had a year or two years ago. All that made sense to her was that she was a daughter of Offspring and Spear’s twin sister. And that in the midst of all this, she had been sick then the fire made her better and stronger somehow.

Now she could use her fire mimicry to become a horse of pure living flame and she clung to that more than anything else at the moment. She could not help it, but she began to smoke and bits of her skin began to fall off revealing the fire underneath until there stood there not a mare of flesh and bone, but a mare of fire that was sinuous and liquid in her shape. Sometimes, Spark could not help these… outbursts. They just happened and as quick as she stood there making the earth burn underneath her flaming hooves, she regrew her skin and tamped the fire back down beneath it. All around her, the ash continued to fall in the quiet and Spark closed her eyes, not quite asleep but not so much as dreaming either. She just shut out the ashy haze and concentrated on just breathing and keeping the fire at bay.

Levi is oblivious to the turmoil inside the mare as he catches sight of her. She paints a peaceful picture, standing under the falling flakes of ash with lidded eyes, and he is drawn to her. Spark. The name flashes in his mind, somewhere from deep within his memories. They were related somehow if he remembered correctly.

"Hello," the mahogany stallion murmurs to break the silence as he approaches. "Spark?" His voice is soft yet flecked with grit like the ash which fills the air around them. The thick atmosphere seems to stifle the words as they leave his lips and he doesn't reach for more immediately as he takes a moment to look at her. He is a stallion in his prime and his instincts bid him take note that she is a mare in her prim. He acknowledges the thought then puts it away, where it belongs. He is a creature evolved past such impulses.
    Most the time.

He would not relate to her thoughts of children if he could hear them, thoughts of his own have never crossed his mind. The making of children had, of course, but he had not once mused over names or imagined if they may take after him. Even if he is nearly five. He didn't see much value in miniatures of himself hounding his heels. But children and the making is far from his mind as he takes just one more step closer, tilting his head to better see her face and possibly place her.

"I'm Levi." He provides his name, unsure if she will remember him. "I hope I didn't interrupt a pleasant dream." A smile plays on one side of his mouth, reserved. He is beginging to feel more comfortable around strangers, at least in his home, and found that most Tephrans wish to get along. But he is still learning how to approach others without his head high and fire in his eyes. He always had been more comfortable with his fire than with conversation

the incense that sun on prairie offers to sky
Spark concentrated on matching the rhythm of her breathing to the beat of her heart and that seemed to quell the fire inside her for the time being. But in the midst of this, she fails to hear him coming. His step is blanketed by the deepening piles of ash on the ground that she stands in and all of a sudden, there is the sound of a hello and her name being questioned. She blinks, confused for a moment because she almost mistook him for her brother but this stallion is taller, thicker, more like Offspring than either Spear or she could ever be. Spark can appreciate a good piece of horseflesh when she sees it and he was spectacular to look at, she admitted that much with the smallest of smiles finding her lips.

However, his stature did not evoke much else from her even if he was in as much of his prime as she was. Instinct recognized the relation between them the moment her mismatched eyes caught sight of his and she knew him to be one of Offspring’s great brood. She had the same set of eyes - the left as black as night and the right as red as blood. It made her smile strengthen and set in permanence on her lips as she finally answered him back, “Yes I am Spark and hello to you too.” He takes a step closer to her, scrutinizes her and she finds that she has to lift her head a little higher just to keep her gaze level with his.

She is certain that she has seen him about. Might even remember their father mentioning something about a son that had gotten into some trouble, stirred some things up then came to seek refuge under his father’s protection but she’s not sure if this is him - so many of Offspring’s children have trampled these shores, coming and going, and she’s never kept track of them, not much. She’s always had Spear at her side and needed little else. “Levi,” she repeats back to him in a murmur. That name did sound familiar to her but she couldn’t place the where or the why of it. Supposed that in the end, it did not matter - he was here in front of her now.

He seems a little reserved though she almost mistook it for shyness except that seemed too much at odds with the rest of him. Levi did not strike her as the shy type but there was something sweetly awkward about the way his mouth wanted to smile but couldn’t really and it made Spark take a step closer to him, lifting her nose out to just brush against his the way a sister might do to a brother, almost encouraging him. Spark almost wanted to say that she wouldn’t bite him if he smiled, but she kept her mouth shut for the moment. Gave maybe another small laugh as she addressed his pleasant concern with a shake of her black-bonneted head. “Oh no, it was no dream at all I was having. I was… thinking.” and she knew that sounded lame but she had no better explanation for what she had been doing.

Her eyes open as she smiles, confusion flitting across her features (gone as quick as it came) and he stifles his own surprise. Her eyes. Never before had he seen his own mismatched eyes reflected back to him any other place than his twins face or a tidepool, and the effect was unsettling. With a pang of longing, he remembers Lynx who he has now spent more of his life apart from than with. Never would he have guessed that he would never see her again when he stuck off in the middle of the night to make his own way. He has to fight the frown the thought tries to put on his face.

Her disappearance was one of his first disappointments in life.

And after all that, here he was back, in Tephra anyway. Not that he regrets his year running wild, he didn't have any real regrets yet. But if he did, it would be that somehow he had erred, contributing to the disappearance of his twin.

Spark takes a step closer, but he doesn't move. Her look is friendly but he is put on edge by something in it that looks a lot like... pity? But then she is reaching out her muzzle to his and he doesn't pull away. They gently brush against each other and her scent confirms what he had already suspected - they are siblings.

    Thinking.
He wonders if she is intentionally being mysterious.
He wonders if he is supposed to ask her what she was thinking about.

"Overthinking runs in the family, I think." Half joke half statement - he has more to learn about the whole 'casual encounter' thing than attacking kingdoms. He tries not to worry about it. With a slight tilt of his head he tries to match her features to those of his father and twin, but the resemblance is slim. "Who is your mother?" He knew Offspring had many children, (he didn't know the true extent of it) and his logical mind wished to place her neatly where she belonged.
