    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

    "But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

    freedoms just another word for nothing left to lose

    Something was wrong. There had been no sign of their parents in days. Her stomach was rumbling with a strong aching hunger, she felt tired, and most of all she was scared although she wouldn’t admit that freely. Where were Mom and Dad? Where was the black winged stallion that her dad liked to glare at? They had disappeared without a trace. It felt like forever (and to a child with no concept of time, it was forever) since they had last been together. Left alone in the birthing cave, only to awaken and discover both were missing.

    And now they were starving to death.

    Her tiny hooves drag across the sand as she moves, small muzzle reaching for the comfort of her twin brother. Little wings rustling in the spring breeze as she chokes on her fear and tries to focus on the task at hand. The sooner they find them, the sooner they could eat. ”Maybe we should find Smoak.” She whispers to the colt, not sure why she’s whispering. Small hard knobs of bone protrude through her buckskin hide around her shoulders as she becomes more anxious, having little to no control of this unknown power. A recent thing that has happened since they have gone missing.

    She smiles at her brother, trying to appear brave and strong. She’s awful at hiding the distress in her hazel eyes. Glancing towards the volcano, remembering their older brother’s adventurous streak. ”Maybe he’s over there?”

    Keep a little fire burning;
    however small, however hidden.

    The oppressive summer heat beats down on Smoak's champagne frame as he lay on his back, legs splayed in the air, by the base of the volcano where a small creek separates him from the path he'd ascended earlier that day. He's been afforded more freedom since his first birthday and the birth of the twins, and he's learned easily enough which sections of the volcano will not drag him into melted, fiery earth and which are safe enough to explore. Today, he'd made it nearly halfway up before having to turn around, wondering to himself where exactly dad had been able to climb to the caldera with the former Queen.

    The trek had been strenuous, however, and Smoak has lapsed into a midday nap. His rest is devoid of dreams, though occasionally his leg twitches in the air or his nostrils flutter as he exhales. He had noticed earlier in the day that Ellyse and Dahmer were nowhere to be found, but alarm was not on the forefront of the colt's mind - frequently, his parents were off completing duties for the Kingdom, and now that he is older, Smoak gets to choose whether or not he will tag along. It's not unusual for him to go a day or two without seeing the pair.

    A light breeze drifts through the air, winding between the colt's spindly legs. He sighs contentedly in his sleep but remains just as he is - hazel eyes closed, snoring ever so quietly.
