    COTY

    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

    Smoak I'm Bored! [Any]

    Solace

Solace sighes and watches the fluffy white clouds float across the blue summer sky. She was bored. And she was ashamed to be bored, surely there was something she should be learning or practicing... but today she just didn't feel like it. She would never admit it to anyone, well, except maybe Svedka -- but only because there was no point in lying to him. But he isn't here today to force her on an adventure or talk about the clouds and tide pools.

Resigned, the yearling filly turns her body to face the opposite direction and looks out over the ocean from her vantage point on top of a tall sand dune. When she looks out this way the clouds are very different than those to the west. These are dark heavy, and they seem to be piling up on each other to create a tall mountain in the sky. A thrill of electrical excitement courses through her chest. No seabirds circle above her like they normally would be doing, and a harsh wind pulls it's finger threw her blue highlighted mane. She smiles.

If only the wind would just shift a little south, then maybe, today would be interesting.

The air is different today. It feels... open. Crisp. There's the promise of turmoil in the way the wind picks up and Smoak throws his head skyward, excited for the break in Tephra's humid, heavy summer. He moves towards the wind, letting it whip his mane and tail back like flags. He feels like an adventurer as he greets the beginnings of the storm head on, his thin legs carrying him across the familiar earth. Tephra quickly turns from tropics to shoreline, mottled with rocky outcroppings and sandy beaches alike.

He stops at the coast. The ocean water roils, relentless against Tephra's coast and begins to lap at Smoak's hocks. The son of  Dahmer and Ellyse has raised his champagne head to the wind, hazel eyes looking into the horizon at the impeding clouds. He stays, brave, against the coast as the squall begins to pick up, and when he hears a sound off to his left, he turns quickly like a soldier prepared to defend his home.

"Solace!" the yearling yells excitedly over the lashing winds. "Let's watch for lightning!" he suggests loudly as he bounds his armored body over to the blue-accented maiden, a playful smirk playing at his lips. "Or are you too scared to stay out in the storm?"

    Solace

In the distance, out over the grey and turbulent ocean, the rain begins to fall from the cloud-mountain in dark curtains. Solace's eyes close as she tilts her pink muzzle up into the sky. She takes a deep breath, savoring the warm salty summer scents as they flow over her.

Her blue eyes flash open as she catches another scent. Smoak! Down and to her right she sees his champagne form at the edge of the restless ocean. She Lunges forward then, letting her momentum carry her down the sand dune towards the colt. "Hi, Smoak!" Warrick's daughter calls, and as Smoak turns to face her she sees something noble and brave in his mannerisms. She slides to a halt at his side with a spray of water, raising her head and tail at his challenge. In response to this challenge, she takes a piece of his cream mane between her teeth and gives it a pull before trotting a few steps deeper into the water. "I love storms! And I'm not Scared!" She says enthusiastically. It's mostly true, even if she had never actually stayed out for one before.

A wave pulls at the sand below her hoves and she rears onto her back legs as it crashes below her, her two front hoves dancing in the air close, but not dangerously close, to Smoak in her own sort of challenge.  But the sparkle in her eyes is enough to let him know that it's all fun and games.

His hazel eyes gleam mischievously as he gazes upon the blue-fringed girl, her voice calling to him over the stormy winds. She'd first been his Queen and he her Head of War. Now, they are opponents, but playful ones. And as she tugs on his mane, the bone-armored colt feigns anger and snaps his blunt teeth playfully out towards her as she moves deeper into the water.

Smoak turns his champagne head back towards the shore briefly (a quick search for Svedka) before moving his gaze back to Solace with a playful snort. "It's okay if you're scared. I won't tell anyone," he trails off, a lopsided grin appearing, "except Svedka!" The filly rears playfully, her long limbs splashing water over his head. Smoak laughs, invigorated by the challenge, and raises his own forelegs towards the roiling sky.

The clouds have darkened, the distant rain is not-so-distant anymore, and there is electricity in the air. As Smoak splashes his front half back into the water, he whinnies loudly into the impending storm. His mane whips about, but his hazel eyes remain on Solace. Thunder rumbles in the distance and his hair stands on end. He grins at the buckskin filly, impressed at her nerve, and happy that she will stay with him to enjoy the power behind the storm - it is sometimes more fun to share these things with a friend.

"Are you ready?!" he yells over the roaring winds.

    Solace

She can no longer see the storm over the ocean because it's on them now. The wind hits her body with force and whips the foam off the waver-tops and into her coat. She is soaked in an instant; her mane is plastered to her thin gold neck and her eyes are splashed with sea-water but there is a smile on her lips. Solace closes her eyes against the salt and bounds back onto the shore in a blind leap.

"I think so!" She yells over the wind a second before lightning strikes- she can't help but stumble backward towards Smoak. Here electric blue eyes widen in surprise but as she turns to look to him she laughs for the nearness of it, the intensity, and the wind seems to pull the air from her narrow chest.

Maybe this is how adventures always make Svedka feel.
If that was so, she could see why he loved them so.

There is another flash, not so close this time but still dazzling, and the earth shakes with the thunder the same moment the world around them lights up. Raindrops hover, suspended in the light like millions of tiny glass beads, and she wonders if she could make her own lightning.

She wonders if she can create such beautiful light, and for the first time in a very long time, she doesn't think of Kaiode.

The storm is upon them in an instant, its squall strengthening with every second that passes. The volley of water from the sky is deafening as it hits the roiling ocean with full force and he can barely hear Solace over the torrential roar. Smoak resembles a drowned rat now, his mane clinging to his champagne coat as he pivots in the ocean water and bounds back for the shoreline, where his friend has struck a widened, squared-off stance.

He moves quickly towards her, the water running off his bone-armored body in rivers and then he squeals loudly at the suddenly flash of light in front of them that hits the beach with the loudest crack he has ever heard. Solace shies back towards him and their yearling frames bump against each other, both of them laughing at the closeness and intensity of the sudden tempest.

The second crash draws the breath from Smoak's chest in awe. It makes him feel small, but alive. So very alive. He rears his champagne body into the air again, a commanding whinny released from his maw as his hooves slash through the deluge. The thunder resounds overhead and all around. He'd never seen a storm this strong, or this loud. And it... is... amazing.

"C'mon!" he yells to Solace as he bounds up the beach, towards where the sandy beach gives way to rock outcroppings. He searches for footing on the slick rocks, stumbling once but regaining his balance quickly to not lose face in front of the blue-tressed girl, before settling himself on the highest boulder with his face turned into the rain and wind. Another flash of lightning illuminates the world around them and Smoak is awestruck by the power of the gale.

    Solace

Her heart is hammering with an intensity she has never experienced before, pounding against her ribs with a strength akin to the thunder which shakes the world around them. It only gets stronger when their small frames collide.

Then she scrambling up the cliff after him, devoting all of her attention to finding a safe route for herself and she doesn't notice his small slip. He reaches the top and she is close behind him.

Facing the storm together, they are an island unto themselves. She feels brave and she feels strong - she feels alive.

"Step back," she says, harnessing her newfound energy "I want to try something."

She closes her cerulean eyes, as the tempest lashes against them, to better attune herself to the surging electricity in her veins. She can feel the current just below her skin, the current which she has come to understand is magic.

Her skin begins to glow, light seeping out of her pours from within and Solace takes a deep breath, opening her eyes open wide. The blue of her irises glow supernaturally bright but she remains focused. Finally, she lets out the breath she has been holding, and with it, a beam of white light is released into the sky.

The expelled energy forces her body backward and she is suddenly breathless and nearly exhausted, the light had faded now and her eyes no longer glow. The wild energy which had raged through her is gone, but it is replaced by something else nearly as pleasant. Slowly, a smile overtakes her features and she turns to look at Smoak.

He and Solace face the storm together, both inspired and awestruck by the tempest. The champagne colt can barely find his breath as he gazes across the ocean, blinking away the rivulets that stream down his face. He can hardest hear Solace when she calls to him, but as the blue-tinted filly takes a step forward, he takes his own step back to give her space. His hazel eyes watch her with intrigue and he holds his breath for a brief moment as Solace closes her eyes and concentrates on the electricity all around them.

When she opens her eyes once more, Smoak's jaw has fallen slack at the bright blue of her gaze. And then, with nearly as much intensity as the lightning that drops threatening around them, she is emitting a beam of light into the sky and he is gasping in awe. The power of it pushes her back to him and the bone-armored colt takes special care to keep his footing sturdy, lest she need support after exerting so much energy.

Solace's gaze meets his, pride evident on her face, and the champagne son of Ellyse and Dahmer lights up in amazement. "How did you do that?!" he laughs over the roar of the storm but the sound is lost in another rumbling crack of thunder overhead.

As her gaze finds Smoak’s face, his expression causes hers to light up - in the more common sense.
She smiles at him as he speaks, but the wind rips away his words and she can only shake her head. Solace doesn’t need to hear his words to understand the look on his face and the laugh that leaves him as lightning again rips the sky apart above them.

Her unbridled excitement has simmered down to a content happiness, but the loss of energy takes a toll on her slim body. The blue-eyed girl begins to shiver as the cool rainwater seeps into her skin and her attention goes from her friend to the volcano.

She pushes her pink muzzle up close to his ear and raises her voice, "Hey, let's go get warm, I know of a cave in the side of the volcano!" Hoping he doesn't see her suggestion as giving up, she waits for his response before she makes a move towards the warmth of shelter. And anyway, it’s a pretty cool cave, and she is sure he would love it. It’s the only one she knows of with its own fresh water spring and it was so nice her mom and dad spent a lot of time in it even when the weather was nice. She wonders if her father is there now, maybe even with Svedka… but the yearling finds herself hoping her families grotto is empty for now.

The pride and unabashed excitement in Solace's face warms the bone-armored colt and he laughs again, prancing his small hooves enthusiastically on the sopping ledge. Another firebolt illuminates Tephra's shoreline and Smoak turns his gaze skywar until his blue-tinged companion is whispering in his pricked ear. He turns his hazel eyes back down to her, searching the new fatigue that has etched itself into her expression. Smoak nods enthusiastically, his earlier jest forgotten as he pivots his champagne body and leaps carefully from flat boulder to flat boulder until his hooves have reconnected with the wet sand of the beach.

The son of Ellyse and Dahmer turns his head back over his shoulder to see where Solace is. He waits for his buckskin friend to dismount from the rocky outcropping before bolting for the treeline and in the direction of the volcano. Rain still roars around them, pounding on their backs and streaming down their faces in rivers. Smoak sends the occasional playful buck into the air, his nostrils flaring in excitement and his chest heaving with exertion as they run.

He slows, allowing Solace to take the lead. He's curious about the secret den she has revealed ─ he has scoured the lava mountain, never able to leave it for more than a few hours. The land mass intrigues him. Perhaps someday he will make it to the caldera.

When Solace slips her gangly frame into the mouth of the cave, Smoak follows her without hesitation, his lips upturned into the smallest of pleasant smirks.
