    COTY

    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

The river shivered and shook like mercury as an easterly wind fought its current, the full moon’s face broken and distorted on the water’s skin. The high-hanging disc, with its clear white light, threw cavernous shadows; from trees, from scrubs and rocks, hillocks and hollows. Deep shadows that mocked the night’s darkness and swallowed it with their lightlessness, turning whatever they touched into indiscernible blackness, even the lively surface of the river.
The night-shadows crawled and crumbled across the water, gobbled up the ground. It seemed as if they would swallow the moon itself. But even this ‘seeming’ was banished by another bright light.
She flew resplendent with sky-wide wings of argent light, swooping along the winding course of the river. She caught the updrafts and downdrafts, delighting in the playful breezes even though, with wings of starlight, she could pay them no heed.

    *Mystere! Mystere!*

She heard the stars call her name, blew them a timbrous nicker in reply as she climbed, higher, higher, higher. The stars came no closer but winked back at the silvery mare. She climbed and climbed but the air became thinner, freezing her breath with an ice-hot pain. Reluctantly she stopped, dropped her lustrous wings of light, and began to plummet back towards the silver thread of the river.
She was a pearlescent meteor as she hurtled down, pulling threads of starlight into a crackling ball. Just as it seemed it might be too late, that she would hurtle into the earth to leave only a crater, the light spread, silent and silver-webbed, back into wings. The meteor became a mare once again, braking rapidly, swooping to land soft in the mercury water like an oversize swan.
Mystere paddled to the edge of the river, emerging onto a soft sandy shore beside a willow that hung hump-backed over the water, its fingers of leaves pulling in the silvery water. Mystere shook the water from her coat, her opaline eyes looking back to the sky. A lilting laugh escaped from her dark skinned muzzle, while around her darted spots of starlight, playful as fireflies.

Under a full moon is where his magic is the most fun. Stalking is mightily easier with the long dark shadows and pristine pools of chrome to play between. Darkness swallows him, even the bone white of his face and splashed chest. The glint of his teal eyes persists until the last second each time he disappears beneath a curtain of empty black. The silvery flicker finds his dapples when he’s in the open, lights the edges of his serrated markings against the obsidian base. He moves quietly but not silently, far too big for that, weaving through the naked skeleton trees and to the river’s rushing edge. He steps into the rippling waters about ankle deep, the current is soft in this spot where the water gathers under a small dam; a nice place to have a drink. It gets abysmally deep and the river is very wide, like a small lake here in the forest.

A strange noise makes him raise his head, his ears pressed upright, his eyes to the sky and the dim stars (moonlight drowning them out). A star is falling, nothing that bizarre – sometimes a comet comes through, also not bizarre, but he does like to watch them. This one descends gracefully, bright and steady as it falls down to earth…only this one does not fade, its brightness is steady as it gets closer. It is head straight for him and instinct tells him to move. He does, darting backward like a deer until he realizes it is a horse. He laughs aloud, part relief and part amusement. His skin prickles with sweat, his adrenaline simmering just as it was threatening to peak.

He steps into the light, but only half of him is exposed, the rest translucent and then gone as the shadows cover him. He chuckles from afar, “I didn’t realize the wishing worked that fast…” He eyes her for a moment before slithering forward, still some distance from her while he watches and isn’t shy about letting his gaze search her feminine form.
