    COTY

    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

[private]  do you feel like a young god? ciri

if there's a light at the end, it's just the sun in your eyes

She apologizes but the words do nothing to extinguish his heartbreak, slipping over him like water. He wants to ask ─ for what? For breaking his heart? For the romantic feelings she has for Castile? For reminding him that he will never be good enough for anyone? But he doesn't, instead falling back into himself and closing that cold outer shell, the one he had not worn since the Dunes.

I never wanted you to be anything other than yourself, she offers, but he is already convinced that if that was the truth, she would not have found herself pining over another.

He knows he's a phony now as his amber eyes harden against her. A phony King, a phony dragon, a phony lover. There is no other explanation. His choking sobs have subsided and now the only remnants of his vulnerability are the small hiccups that compress his diaphragm and the lingering tears that cling to his golden scales. The sight of Ciri's own red-rimmed eyes clenches a tight fist around his heart but he can't console her now. He has said all he can, and none of it has been what she had wanted to hear.

His coldness is marred with regret as she turns from him finally, muttering Jah-Lilah's name as she heads for the treeline. Amet watches the starry-eyed mare go with his narrow head held high and his jaw clenched, and as much as he wants to call to her, his akmar... perhaps she is not his anymore, nor will she ever be. His heart shatters in silence and when he is finally alone, her smoky black frame disappearing towards their private hovel, he stumbles to the spot that he had found her on the shoreline.

Amet falls into the mud and rocks, his knees scraping against the earth as he settles his gilded body half in and half out of the cool water, just as he had found her.

And he cries without care of whether any of Hyaline's residents stop by the lake and see him.
