    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

    Kromium ~ Karat
    Blood is Thicker than Water

Karat prances in place with a happy jig as her instructions work perfectly.  A squeal of joy comes over her at the sight of the necklace dangling from Kylins neck.  She is quick to comment, "Yes! That looks perfect... The shells suit you." Her small face nods in comfirmation at her statement and then she looks to her brother for his input.  Lavender eyes shift to find Krom smiling and looking at her.  Reaching her nose to press into his cheek she questions him, "So?! Whaddya think Krom? Doesnt Kylin look beautiful?" Her gaze pauses briefly on him before looking to her father that watched curiously, "Daddy... Doesn't Kylin look stunning?!" She is beaming as Krom and her Father speak at nearly the same moment but they are muffled under Karats own voice again, "You look magnificent!"

Krom had nodded in agreement and of course was overshadowed by his sister.  He didn't mind though.  He didn't care to be the center of attention.  Emerald eyes look to Kylin with a smile and then to his father, who has taken a back seat to the happenings as well.

He was just about to comment, when a familiar voice carried across the breeze.  His ears swiveled in the voices direction as his head turned to follow...

Kromium...Karat... We need to get going...

The call is clearly mother and much to Karats dismay they call out in unison that they were coming.  Karat swiftly bounds forward to give Kylin a hug and then turns to kiss her father's cheek.  Krom simply bids both of the adult horses farewell with a noble bow of his head, before turning to follow in his sister's wake.  Both excited to find out where they were going...

It takes all he has not to chuckle as Karat gives her elaborate instructions.  Her face was so serious and he darned not show his amusement.  When finally the necklace is in place and Karat seeks their opinions, he gets only a nod out before she is off again.  Raging about Kylins new accessory like she didn't need their comments anyhow.  Her mind had already been made up.

When Krones voice calls to them, his head tilts curiously.  The twins are quick to say their goodbyes and he brushes his muzzle across each of them before they take off.  Going...

His silver eyes turn their attention to Kylin.  A chuckle leaving his vocal cords before he speaks, "She does mean well but that girl can chat for HOURS!" He emphasizes hours with a draw and slight roll of his eyes.  "They are good kids," he smiles at her and reaches his muzzle to nudge her neck.  His eyes wonder along her flesh as he thinks, "She is right though... You do look stunning." He brushes an unruly tendril of forelock from her face before placing a soft kiss on her cheek.

His thoughts went back to what Krone had called to the twins. Where were they going? His brow furrows as he looks to Kylin, "I should go see what's happening... Wait for me here?... Please." His eyes are pleading and he hopes she will wait for him.  He anticipates her answer and before she can give it he is taking to the skies.  Soon to return but by the time he does she is gone...

There is my mind, there is my heart.
Karat makes her forget about her heartache so, so easily. The filly is all she is not, but her outgoing and bright personality make Kylin forget about all she lacks. What to say? Karat, being herself, is just extremely contagious. The lavender and white woman chuckles softly, her hazel eyes warm as the smile upon her lips grows wider. ”I think you are right. I love the sea, and all the belongs with it.” Kylin is as much part of the sea as the shells are.

She is still smiling at the girl when Karat first asks Kromium, then Klaudius, if Kylin looks beautiful. There is no way in denying that that question has her flustered. Partly Kylin is thankful that the by and lavender filly continues, concluding that Kylin does look great, but another part of her does wants to hear whatever Klaudius might have answered.

    Would he agree, or disagree?

That’s another thing Kylin does not get to ponder over. Her attention is on the twins, watching them lift their heads when their mother calls. The sad feeling when they say goodbye and cross away is enough to make her realise how much she had liked it to meet hem, and the void they leave behind.

Not only they, but their father too. ”It’s okay,” she tells him with a small smile, shyly glancing in Klaudius’ direction. ”and they are, they really are.” She does not get a chance to say more, to tell him how she is like Kharon, where Kylin herself was more like Kromium. His muzzle on her skin has her distracted, and she leans into his touch without a second thought.

What happens next is all one big chaotic mess. Physically nothing much happens, but her thoughts run wild. She’s trembling underneath his touch – in a way that is both good and bad. Something flutters in her stomach, and the way her heart skips a beat is so familiar. It is scary, and yet so, so good. Before Kylin would not have hesitated to push her own muzzle against the one igniting those feelings in return, but all that has happened makes her hesitate. And before she can gather enough courage to return the favour, he’s gone.

And Kylin is painfully reminded of the fact that he already has a family.

The loneliness hits her like a rock, knocking her of her feet. With teary eyes she watches him leave, gasping for air as she is unable to fight the tears that roll down her cheeks. Alone. She is alone. He told her she looks beautiful, stunning even, but leaves her just as easily. He has taken her short moment of happiness with him too.

For a while she just stands, staring in the direction they had disappeared into. She wants to follow, to be with them, belong with them, but she is painfully aware she never will. In the end, she is wandering the beach, with no clear direction in mind. Perhaps it is fate that carries her over towards the piebald mare that just sets foot on Ischia’s shore.
