    COTY

    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

    Tähti

Finally - for a moment, the black winged foal seemed to have lost her mother. It's not like she had anywhere to go much, but it was a feat she had tried to explore for the whole month of her existence, with perhaps the exception of her first week, come to think of it. She did not really recall, since her short-term memory was filled with the excitement of this finally happening.

Tähti went straight for the lake. Yes, she knew it was dangerous, she had been told multiple times. But it was soooo pretty! It was blue, it was shiny, it was something the adults drank instead of milk, it was just... fascinating. Drawn to the lights on the water's surface, the black foal darted towards it like an arrow shot from a longbow.

She could almost hear her mother call her back, and so, hesitantly the winged girl stopped by the shoreline. Perhaps... perhaps she was not supposed to touch the pretty. Adults could drink it though? Maybe that was a good idea to try! But when she had gathered the courage to try it, she wrinkled her nose. Bleh! Why would anyone want to drink this? She spit out the water, and made a face at the shiny lake.

    Solace

Solace lays in the shade of a wisteria tree - Amet's tree - with her gaze absentmindedly cast out across the lake. Her thoughts wander unchecked and the filtered, lavender light casting dapples across her pelt.

The sounds of splashing water draw her back to the present, and when she catches sight of Ilma's daughter and the expression on her dainty face a light laugh leaves Solace's lips. She realizes this is the first true laugh she has laughed in quite some time, but the thought does not sadden her - she is happy to be feeling more like herself again.

The pale mare stands, giving a good shake to rid her pelt of any stray leaves or flower petals, before stepping into the sunlight along the lakeshore and towards the dark filly.

Today was as good a day as any to uphold her promise to look after the girl.

"Not a fan of water, I take it?" She calls as she wades into the lake in front of where the girl stands. "It's about time we met - I'm Solace." she gives a little nod, a touch of formality is always pleasant, before she gives a short pause for the filly to introduce herself. But her face soon takes on a questioning expression which dances between playful and serious.

"Has anyone taught you to swim yet? No daughter of Hyaline should go into summer without knowing how to swim."

There is my mind, there is my heart.
Kagerus had left her, encouraged her to discover Hyaline and meet her habitants. But without the bay overo’s guidance Kylin hadn’t known how to. And thus she had secluded herself to the cave where they’d spend the night together, snuggled comfortably close. Like before, the lavender tobiano mare is lost.

Even though winter had made room for spring – and summer is already knocking at the door – Kylin’s physical state hadn’t changed for the better. She is still too thin, not life threatening or even dangerously, but not as should be. Her lips are cracked, the lack of water had caused it to happen, and her pale coat looks like is in dire need of a bath. A bath that she is finally giving herself.

From the cave she was able to see Hyaline’s lake. She had caught herself staring at it more than once, feeling its pull on her. Like before, Kylin wants to go there, to accept her nature. Until today, she hadn’t dared. Today, the pull, the lure, has become too strong to resist.

With no eye for anything but the water, the lavender woman had found her way to the shore. Her first steps had been on top of the surface, but the furthers she moves to the middle of the lake, the more she feels the need to swim. Something she does not need to tell herself twice. Kylin allows herself to sink through the surface. A soft gasp escapes her lips, the water more crisp than she had thought. Her muscles crap, ears flick back nervous, but her fins seem to thrive. She’d denied herself water for too long.

A couple of minutes of swimming is enough to exhaust her. And the thrill, her excitement, take a toll on her energy level too. Two powerful flaps of her fins and Kylin finds herself stepping on top of the lake’s surface again. Water rolls down her body, dripping down and reuniting with the water. But that is not where her hazel gaze is locked on. Instead she finds herself staring at a dark girl on the water bank.

The déjà vu hits her right on. Here, and just like this, she had met Ivar, when they had both been around the age of this filly. The memory is enough to pull her out of her isolation, her legs moving forward on their own. But she does not reach the shore. A pale and golden mare changes the cause of events, and Kylin keeps standing on the surface in the middle of the lake.

Both her ears pin forward, wanting to join them. Kylin has been so lonely for so long now, and she hates to be alone, but at the same time she does not know how to not be alone.

    Tähti

The black filly was about to turn around to investigate something else, something less trickstery - why was it so pretty but so bad to drink? - but then she was interrupted. Another winged mare, but with golden patches and dark mane, approached. Her coulours pretty, just as she liked the lake, the dark filly was intrigued easily bu the woman now splashing through the water. ”How can you like it? It tricked me into drinking!” she shook her head. Still, she did not outright deny the lake was pretty, and besides, Solace told her of something else to do with water. ”I’m Tähti.” Politeness came first. Then curiosity overwhelmed her thoughts and mouth once more. ”What’s swimming?” she asked.

However before she listened to the answer, her eye caught the lavender figure on the lake. ”Oh! Like she does? Hello! Are you swimming?!” she called loudly across the lake.

    Solace

"I think you have to learn to like it," Solace laughs to the girl. Briefly, she thinks it must be difficult to be a child without a twin, to be without someone to explore the strange new world of water and mountains, without another curious face to bounce childish ideas off of.

Solace is about to give a better explanation and a demonstration on swimming, but her gaze flashes to the middle of the lake at the fillies comment. Her recent experience of drawing Kagerus from the shallows causes a flash of panic to cross her usually poised features. But the expression would be easy to miss, it only lasts a split second.

The lavender mare on top of the water surprises Solace - she had seen many things in Beqanna, but this was new. Her body relaxes as she observes the water-walking mare for a moment before looking back to Tahti. "No that's not swimming, anyone can swim - I would guess she is using magic for that special trick," Solace says her words quickly before she turns again to the reserved mare "Hello!" She calls across the water, "We were just about to go for a quick swim if you would like to join us."

Even across the distance, Solace can see the purple newcomer looks a little tired, but she hopes she agrees to join them anyway. It was always good to have an extra adult around when a rambunctious child was stepping into the water for the first time.
