    COTY

    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

She had been caught up in a dream.

A dream that had almost felt like it has lasted for a lifetime—she doesn’t recall much of the years that had passed by. For the most part it had been a lull, and she was waking up for the first time in a long time.

Just as spring came, she had been renewed too. She grew as the flowers grew, finding strength in the warming sunlight and the rain that came to feed the earth again. There was new life in the world again.

Madelyn founds herself in the midst of an enclosed section of the forest. A hidden part of the world tucked away. It is her safe haven—not even the darkness of the world can find her here. She yawns softly, feeling the dreariness of her sleep still taking a toll on her.

The buckskin girl stands, stretching her legs out one at a time. Her legs feel stiff and tight, but perhaps that is what happens when you are one to turn to the world of dreams. Madelyn found herself caught up in a world of such—then again, she found herself sleepier after winning the games.

Feeling the last of the yawns escape her lips, she slips through thee enclosed glade and out into the forest. Madelyn takes a random path today. She most of the time allows her feet to carry her where she goes. The day ahead of her is unknown—simply as always she takes what the world gives her. Her life has always been simple, and perhaps would always be such.

Madelyn finds herself humming to a song this morning, trailing through the path. A simple, yet soft grin is placed on her lips.

She, the dreamer girl, has crossed his dreams as many faceless shadows have. They are untroubled and ignorant of what goes on around them. Castile watches them flutter by in his sleep, envying them, wanting to be them. He has only known conflict – hardly in the outside world – that cuts through his mind like knives each and every day. The internal struggle he experiences has become a great part of him by now. What is inner peace? What is true happiness? He can recall brief segments of joy back when his shifting didn’t control him or have its own poisonous voice in his head. There was a time that he had been carefree and when he only concerned himself with his next feeding from mother.

Has it been that long? Since his childhood?

A breath catches in his throat when his eyes suddenly reel open. The dreamer girl had passed him in his sleep just as she does now with a honeyed smile on her face and a blissful perception of the forest towering above them. Castile looks on, curiously and enviously, but he doesn’t hold it against her. He doesn’t frown when her smile radiates. Wait, come back, he wants to say as she slips deeper into the system of trees, her skin dappled by the thin sheets of sunlight breaking through the canopy.

She is fading, just like in his dreams.

A glance down confirms that he isn’t rooted to the ground like when he sleeps. The dreams that play are a movie reel that he cannot take part in; he is immobile and forced to watch these nameless, happy figures flaunt their joy before disappearing again and again.

But he isn’t dreaming this time. He is awake. He can move.

A plume of black smoke coils from his nostrils when he lurches forward and slips among the forest’s sentinels to find her. ”Hello,” he says to her while stepping over fallen branches to reach her side. ”You look so happy,” his voice mirrors the fascination of his thoughts, ”So radiant.” Because he won’t withhold the truth from her. The brightness forms an alluring aura around her that draws him in, but he dare not step closer than he already is. ”Why?” Perhaps he should’ve asked how so that he may learn, but there is a sliver of him that is afraid to know. Is it possible for a monster to be truly happy and to find peace?

    (No)

A dreamer is what she always has been—she is oblivious of the world, and truly is in her current state as she moves among the forest floor. Her hazel eyes do not search for anyone or anything in particular. Only the feel of the faintly warm winter sun is something she notices. Then again, it is only for a second that she cares to give attention to the world.

Madelyn continues her walk, through the freshly fallen snow she had awoken in not long ago. Her hum continues. It seems a little louder this time though—perhaps making up for the silence of the forest today.

Suddenly, she is quickly brought away from her dream-like world with the hustle and bustle of the multi-colored stallion. Madelyn jerks to a quick halt as he pulls out of the forest. His greeting sends a sharp look of worried across of her face as she turns to him to fully grasp what is happening around her. Her worried reaction doesn’t last long and is quickly plastered with the same smile she had on before.

“Oh, hello there!” She instantly greets back to him.

But it seems she is quickly bombarded with more words from his lips. Her hazel eyes carefully watch the stronger. His fascination is easy to notice—then again, she has always felt like she could get a good reading on others.

Madelyn giggles at his words. She finds his questions quite interesting, but they are not completely preposterous to her. “I am quite happy today. It’s a new day!” she says with satisfaction. There is a smile she cannot surely hide stretching across her lips. The buckskin mare doesn’t find herself feeling anything else except that. She does not really remember feeling anything else in fact.

It has been a long time since she even thought of or felt something other than being happy or content with herself and the life she found herself living. His question puzzles her though, almost as she questions the reality of her happiness too. Madelyn’s head tilts to the side, her brow furrows in perplexity.

“Are you not happy?” she asks plainly, not even considering the current state of her place. The dreamer does not dwell on the fact that he is a stranger. A stranger in the forest, searching her out, prodding rather random questions at her.
