    COTY

    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

Lavendel, a refuge. Her name didn't fit well with that title, didn't fit well at all. She had cried when the news came, had they not been doing it right? Oh God, was it her fault? Had she failed Sylva in her duties?... No. No it was that bastard Modicum that ruined it. He ripped the only true home she had known from her. It was he who had caused the unshed tears to burn her eyelids as she stood before him whilst he slithered his way into her queen's throne. It was he whom she had wished such terrible things on before leaving the forest forever. It was he who had made them all feel so alone... So terrified.

The tears came slowly at first as she walked, and then wracked her body in such fitful sobs that she had to stop and let the emotion take her for a while. It was gone. Gone to who knows what the clown would do. The queen who took her in like a child had slipped away like fine silk, and Jesper... Sweet Jesper who knew where he had gone. The painted woman choked on a sob and turned her head to the dimming  sky. Where would she go now? She fought her mind for memories of where those she had met went home too.

Tephra, while nice seemed much to dark for the girl, and Nerine wasn't her kind of party, Ischia had become to wrapped into the nonsense, and...

    She shook her head fitfully.

Hyaline. She would go to Hyaline in search of Svedka and Ilma, they had been so kind to her before... Lavendel smiled ever so slightly at the memories of the two and found the strength to glide forward once more.

    Hyaline.
    ~

It was prettier than Svedka said it would be.
The mountains rolled into the perfect little valley, who's heart was the shinning emerald of a lake only who knows how deep. The trees made nice little copses all decked out in seasonal Wysteria and colorful flowers of the iris sort.. It was beautiful and so brightly colored that Lamb wondered if Hyaline made colors all on her own. Not anywhere in sight did she see the tell tale oranges and reds of the Sylvan floor. Somewhere in some part of her she closed that door with a slam.

She couldn't change what had been done. It was too late for worrying, but then again there was never a need to worry.

She called out to them then, hoping someone would come.

    Solace

As the red summer dawn breaks over the mountains Solace's eyes flash open. There is no soft transition between sleep and wakefulness this morning. There is a new energy rippling across Bequanna, and it draws her from the dewy meadow to the sky.  The world between the clouds and the mountain peaks was her safe place, the place where she could cast a watchful eye across the land beyond without stepping foot outside her home.

From here, Solace spots the dunskin woman just as she reaches the foothills of Hyaline. A call is issued as she begins her descent, and Solace lands in a swirl of wisteria blossoms before the newcomer with her usual friendly expression. But her stock greeting grows dry in her mouth as looks into the other mares face.

"Is everything alright?" She asks before her wings have fully collapsed back into their resting place along her golden spine. Dried tear stains and hard running have left the pretty woman looking a little disheveled, and although Solaces does not recognize her she immediately wants to help.

"Please, this way I will show you to the lake and you can tell me about it while we walk... if you would like." She gestures towards the line of violet trees divided by a stony path. But she does not start in that direction quite yet, curiosity and concern do not allow her to look away from the pale mares face.

    Tähti

The black feathered girl hardly takes notice that her summer coat is slightly less dark than she had been at birth, but even if she does, it's no big deal to her. It's highly probable that the summer sun is lightening it, and next fall she'll return to the colour of the night sky, dipped with that single star on her head that she's named for.

She itches, her feathers are a mess and she wants to rearrange the wings. But if she does, she will wake her mother, who's dozing in the summer sun, so instead she clings the wings to her sides and carefully steps away until she is out of hearing range. When finally she is away, however, she catches Solace walk towards a stranger. And if anything is exciting, it's meeting new horses! Because some may want to play with her!

She bounces towards the two, forgetting her fur and wings are still a bit of a mess. Tähti has no time to groom herself, though she endures Ilma cleaning her when she is tired enough to stand still. Like a happy bumblebee she interrupts the conversation, not knowing what it is about and not really caring. She would like the friendly-looking young mare to stay, just because she (at least the filly notices this subconsciously) looks like she needs it, and that she thinks perhaps she will find a new friend in her. "Hello! Who are you? Are you staying?" The filly is too excited to notice the look on the dunskin-and-white female, and perhaps that is for the best.

the secret of our world is written in the stars
    He awakes with the sun.

He had dreamt of the moon and the stars, which had shifted and moved from their normal positions across a black expanse of endless night. The movement was radiant and beautiful, majestic in the way that the galaxies twisted and turned - from purples to pinks to the lightest of silvers. He had watched hungrily, a tiny and insignificant figure beneath the yawning and neverending universe. But now golden light draws him seamlessly fromhis  sleep, its warm and radiant tendrils filtering through the gentle sway of the branches cascading from his willow tree, slowly ushering him from his unconsciousness. Bleary-eyed but well-rested, the sun-and-cloud stallion tosses his head, the ivory and bright blue of his mane and forelock falling across his face.

By the time he has moved from his willow and into the early morning sun, dawn had revealed the morning glories and wisteria, showering the valley with the warmth of summer’s plenty. The eastern wind brings the scent of fresh meadow grass and a shiver of coolness from the mountains, but also something new and also familiar. There is a call that the wind brings to him, and though perhaps not meant for him to investigate, he does so anyway.

It does not take him long to find them, a trio on the borders between Hyaline and the river. Only one is familiar, and immediately his heart pricks with adoration as he recognizes the bright and beautiful wings and the deep gold of Solace. There is a young filly - with disheveled wings and a tiny, cheery voice - as well as another. The stallion finds his place beside Solace, a low and warm nicker of greeting offered to his twin. He flicks an ear towards the ebony child, lowering his head to glance at her from behind Solace, snorting softly at her eagerness and chuckling warmly.

A small smile - cunning and knowing - finds his champagne-gold lips as the brightness of his blue eyes fixates on the deep honey and white of the woman who has ventured beyond the River and mountain to find them. With immediate recognition, he murmurs gently: “Little lamb,” his voice serious and tender. He remembers her from their early morning in the wildflowers of the meadow and notices that there is a difference in her that had not been there before. There is sadness in her eyes, despite the courage that shines there too.

He had not been close enough to hear Solace offer to escort her to the lake, but he knows his sister well and assumes that the offer has already been given. He waits patiently - which is strangely so for him - with a gentle gleam in his bright eyes as he fills himself up with whatever grief that has stricken her, his face soft.

All she can muster for the moment is a nod in the golden mare's direction. While the mare offered no name those shinning blue eyes were familiar and kind, so Lamb steps forward and sucks in a breath.

"I would enjoy that greatly. Thankyou."

It is a harsh whisper, her voice. It didn't ring as musically as it should have, or sound nearly as pleasant as it did mere days ago. Dark lashes fall over her face as another approaches them, a girl, robed in ebony feathers. She is the opposite of Lavendel's somber appearance, she was what Lamb was working towards again. Despite it all Lamb pulls a smile because happiness was contagious no matter what the circumstances.

"Hello darling girl, I am Lavendel. What might your name be?"

She avoids the first question for now because another approaches then. He (like the first equine) is golden and light. Had all the horses in Hyaline been touched by the sun? Though as he comes closer her smile falters and the reality of what was to come for them all set in once more. She had met him before, in a happier time. The sneaking suspicion is confirmed only when he speaks her name.

    "Svedka?"

It is a whisper as she looks between the two before her. The mare's eyes had been familiar because they held the same twinkling as her twin's. With a shuddering intake she turns to the bright eyes of the girl beside her before returning her gaze to twin hues.

"While I am happy to see you Svedka, I only wish it could be upon happier circumstances."

She cuts off before she can scream out. The matter was not one for children. There was no need to bring the innocent mind of a girl into the crippling case of reality.

"I do apologize for arriving unannounced."

She turns to the mare as she speaks, for of course Lamb knew who she was. (It had been her job after all...though the realization hadnt quite come until now) There is not a hint of the diplomat she had been in the soft edges of her voice. It is simply the soundings of a friend worried for the future of the home they had left.

"But I believe what I have to tell you may make up for such informality."

    Solace

With hooded eyes and a harsh whisper, Solace receives her answer. Her heart aches for the mare and Solace moves to come alongside her, so they may walk together to the lake. "I'm Solace, the Caretaker here in Hyaline." Some strangers come to them by accident, not knowing that they had left the common lands, and others come intentionally seeking the Sanctuary Kingdom. While Solace suspects that this mare is in the latter group, she still takes a moment to let her know where she, to let her know she is safe here. "Anything you need, I'm here to help."

But before any more information can be gleaned, there is a little shadow scampering over the stones to meet them. Ever the curious spirit, Tahti draws a smile from the crestfallen newcomers with ease. Solace looks to the dusky girl with a proud, expectant glance when Lavendel responds, allowing her a moment to answer the question the other adult has given her.

Then there is another, and Solace teasingly pulls at a navy tendril fo his mane in silent greeting of her twin as his eyes find those of the Lavendel. She is not surprised to find that her far-traveling brother has already met the newcomer as his intimate, husky greeting is passed to Lavendel.

Her gaze slides back to Tahti as the mare and stallion greet, giving the child a sassy '"don't you say a word'  kind of look and a half quirked, secret smile.

But then Lavendel's comment addressed to Solace causes that smile to fade and her attention to return to the matter at hand. 'I believe what I have to tell you may make up for such informality.'

"No need to apologize," Solace replies, her voice serious and her eyes searching - finally the suspense is getting the best of her. "But what is going on?"

    Tähti

Tähti does not get the exact answer she's hoped for, but with all the glances and secretive smiles she gets all of that is quickly forgotten. She's practically bursting and receiving even more attention than she had anticipated (and probably should, since it fuels her curiosity beyond whatever her mother would have in tow for her); she shakes herself finally to rearrange at least a bit of her feathers and mane, and then answers to the lovely visitor. "I am Tähti. Welcome to Hyaline!" she remembers to say cheerfully. She glances to Solace in hopes for an approving nod, but receives a knowing look that says she should perhaps fall to the background if she wants to know what is going on. Lavendel seems very serious about something, so for once, the ebony girl does indeed shut up, although she perks her ears to Svedka when he moves his head to look at her.

The filly receives multiple glances then, and almost reluctantly steps backwards towards Solace's unoccupied side; she's the one that Tähti is most familiar with after all, perhaps like an aunt, and she trusts her enough that in the more dire circumstances she will tell her what to do best. She marks the names of Svedka and Lavendel in her mind, perhaps she will see more of them in the future but for now, it may be best to wait, her amber eyes dancing from one horse to another as she feels the tension rise. Something is the matter, and if she wants to know what, she needs to be silent for a time. At least that seemed to be what Solace wanted her to do, even if with the last few words the cerulean-winged mare seems to have forgotten she is there. Or pretends to.

the secret of our world is written in the stars
Her eyes are a little brighter when she recognizes him, and it makes his heart leap. Her voice is a whisper as she questions his name, and he answers her with a broad, handsome smile. Despite the sadness that clings to her body, she is every inch of the wildflower woman he had met in the meadow in the sun’s first light. “Even on the saddest circumstances, Lavendel, will I be happy to see you.” His voice is gentle and low, a soft nicker vibrating in his throat as encouragement. She looks as if she is about to burst with either exhaustion and despair, so he says nothing else, turning to Solace to give her a widened, sad blink. His twin implores for more - gently, tenderly - and so Svedka moves past Lavendel, turns, and then comes to her side.

He is solid and stoic beside her - a pillar of strength for the woman to press against, to hold onto as she is asked to explain further. Svedka can tell that her thoughts are more than she can bear, but that she holds it in so well. He is even so bold as to keep his shoulder steadily against the pale gold of her own, curving his neck keep his cerulean gaze strictly on her. He is patient and unwavering, nostrils quivering once more as a deep nicker is offered to her. She is safe here, he promises her silently, his pale muzzle brushing tenderly against her tear-stained cheek.

She is too beautiful to be this sad, and once Svedka understands why, he will fix it for her. He will chase the sadness from her eyes in whatever way he knows how.

The sigh that escapes her is long and dreaded as Svedka comes to stand at her side. Lavendel leans into him as much as he had to her, their golden sides touching just enough to strengthen her words.

"Perhaps it wont be news to you, but Sylva has been falling for quite some time,"
If only there had been more time for the kingdom.
"We were weak and in our dark hours evil pushed us out."
Her pale sapphire eyes find Solace's.
"A great darkness is washing over Beqanna Solace. A terrible, terrible man has taken throne in Sylva."

Her gaze falls to the ebony child and she shakes her head before turning her gaze to the sky. It seems dull now, less brilliant than it had been before.

"Take this as a warning Queen Solace. This man wont stop until he has it all."
There is an anger in her words, laced with bitter truth and denial. This Modicum was cruel and quick to punish. His minions had crawled from the wood work and God only knew how many lay dormant for now.

Lavendel turns her gaze to meet Svedka's now and then returns to her somber lyrics.
"If it is all right with you, I'd like to stay here. I can offer my assistance in any way you see fit Solace."
Her gaze is pleading. Even if she were to stay, she had to do something to help. She had to prevent this from happening to anyone else.
