    COTY

    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

The bats have left the bell tower

    The victims have been bled

Winter had taken over the world with it's icy breath, killing all green life in the land. Slowly it's dark cold breath crept up under the thick dark grullo coat of young Talzanna. Her dark refined head stuck out, neck like that of a snake creeping along the crevices of a stone wall. Searching for what not was there. She barely remembered a time when she had others around her. Having not met her father, and her mother spending no time with her, you could say she had grown a little bitter. She trudged along slowly, letting the cold of the deep snow torture her skinny dark legs. She clenched her teeth into a dark smile, trying to hide the pain of the cold. Her long black mane and tail dripping with crystalline ice droplets, making it glitter and make light clinking sounds as it was tousled by the night breeze. She was not much a fan of this cold here out in the open. The field tonight was what Talzanna imagined the Tundra to feel like, and she didn't like it.

She wondered what there was to offer her here, she also wondered how she could get what could be offered. Should she stand still and quiet in the shadows of the trees lining the outsides of the field, or make like a damsel in distress and flaunt herself around, throwing her newly formed hips this way and that. That could attract something right? She snorted, somewhat amused with what her mind was cooking up. After many dumb ideas she decided on mixing the first two options...she was young, fresh blood to some. Why not make herself a little more appealing right? Though she had zero experience with doing so and would probably end up looking like a fool flailing about among the trees. Pushing her anxieties about her decision aside, she positioned herself beneath a bunch of slumping dark snow frosted pines. Cocking one long dark leg up in what she imagined to be a provocative way. Letting out a low whinny, she stepped forward, bouncing a bit, letting the frost bitten world know she was somewhat ready for what this sick sad world had to offer. She had no idea of the kind of creatures she would attract on this dark frozen night. Though if anything she sees herself as the creature to be wary about.

We are at war. There will be scars.

Finally, at long last, he's old enough to come to the field.

He had wanted to go for so long, to come here and seek out new blood for his home. He knows without doubt that the lifeblood of any kingdom is its members, and that members are one thing the Chamber sorely lacks. But it's unseemly for a child to be out recruiting. It makes the Chamber seem desperate.

Which it kind of is. But even if you're desperate you don't want to look it.

And so, secure in the knowledge that he's serving his kingdom, he doesn't mind the trudge through the snow to the Field. In fact, he relishes the chill against his legs. His father has taught him to be a warrior, taught him that what matters most is being able to push through, to persevere against almost impossible odds. The mind is stronger than the body, Warship had taught him, and Erebor has always known that to be true.

He pushes on, reaching the field at last. The snow is thick and heavy, and it shows no signs of stopping. But no matter, the boy does not shiver. The Chamber is not the tundra, but it is not the jungle or the Deserts, it is a place that sees winter like the rest of the world. Erebor's black coat has grown thicker, accustomed to the chill. His rigid discipline is not broken by this.

He casts his gaze around the frozen field, looking for a horse to approach. He spots a mare out of the corner of his eye, young like he is. He watches her for a moment, and his trained eyes can see the slight hesitation as she tries to figure out how to position herself. He sees her cock her leg, and he hears her whinny and then…bounce? He almost wants to chuckle then. He'd have written her off if she'd been just another floozy, just another mare looking to snare a passing stallion. Well, he probably wouldn't have written her off – he'd have approached her anyway because, as mentioned above, the Chamber (and every kingdom in Beqanna) is a little desperate. But he'd have been skeptical about her chances as a fit for the Chamber.

But now – now he suspects that there's more to her than the simple floozy. She's playing a bit of a mind game, going for something that's a bit more than the obvious. And that, well that's exactly the kind of thing the Chamber is looking for.

He moves toward her then, pushing powerfully through the snow. He does not seem to struggle with it, so much as to simply bear it forward along with him. It thins out as he reaches the area under the tree where the mare stands. He gently shakes the snow and wetness from his coat as he slides under the protection of the tree. He is entirely black and well-muscled, standing some 16 hands. His build is powerful, and he carries himself powerfully. He has a constant soldier's bearing, as though he's always standing at attention, just a little bit. He offers her a nod. "Great weather today, isn't it?" his voice is rich, but his sarcasm is dry. A small smile plays on his lips.

    "I'm Erebor, from the Chamber."

That’s right, she is fresh meat, a little bit of a treat, and something nice to eat.

This is his season. He is the worst of winter. And he is big and he is bad, and he is mean. For no reason other than that he could. He is snow and ice and fear, and he just loves to get underneath that soft, pretty skin, and see just how much frostbite one could take.

The last plaything he had cowered and whimpered and really just made the whole cat and mouse game not-so-fun anymore. It’s more fun when they give him a challenge. It’s thrice as much fun when they’re his partner in crime. Ladies are either one or the other - beautiful birds to be broken, or baying beasts to run at his side. He eventually let her go - let her have nightmares of him for years to come, let some other stallion take care of his psychotic leavings. It’s not his problem. It’s never his problem. He is the problem.

Alas, with the last plaything gone, he’s in need of another pet (or something more, but Belgarath rarely gets his hopes up about that). Fortunately for him, it wasn’t long before an ahhh… tinkling lady came prancing and posing about the Field. Literally. If she wanted attention, then Bel was more than happy to oblige… but she might found out that she’s gotten a little more than she bargained for. Provocative, indeed. With a whoosh (ok, more like the crackling of breaking ice), Belgarath heralds his approach, sending a swathe of crystals over the thin layer of snow. It reaches the mare and her other would-be suitor (only just arrived - but oh, they make things fun too), and the Spanish Norman stallion continues to stalk forward. Subtlety was not one of the skills he chose to cultivate, and at an impressive 17hh, there’s no need to try and be subtle.

He is snide. Snide and snarky, but lets the ice do the talking for now. Larger shards spring up from the frozen ground - not yet dividing the two horses before him like he did with the others. But he is ready to if he doesn’t win. And oh, those shards are sharp. Very sharp. And very scary.

“Well, well, well… what do we have here? Erebor of the Chamber? I used to live there, once upon a time. And what’s your name, pet?”

Let’s start out with the easy way and see what happens. The hard way was only a thought away.

She feels like such a fool, she snorted, annoyed with herself. How can this possibly be attractive, what the hell am I thinking... her head buzzed, oh the joys of being a spry young...lady?? More like child, barely of age to breed at all, how could she possibly be a lady. Though apparently her flouncing around like one of those one night stand mares did it's job. Talzanna is in mid turn when he approaches her, she bounces to a stop, turning her beautiful dark head to look at him over her newly found plump rump. Bright brown eyes flash mischievously at the dark stranger. Well isn't he a tall drink of water? She slowly turns to him, smiling slyly as she is amused with his small talk. Great weather? She shivers a little. Not too great in her eyes, but it wasn't like an arctic overtaking. Her voice is light, not high pitched or annoying. Just...nice? "I guess you can say it's great. Though I do prefer the fall to winter for some reason, guess it's the colors." she stops, hoping she does not sound too childish. of course she would begin to babble like an incompetent foal-like fool. She shakes her mane off, sending little crystals through the air, glittering around her lightly. The handsome young stallion introduces himself as Erebor in her paused moment of self consciousness. She dips her head slightly, "Erebor..." she takes it in like a cool breath of winter air, "I'm Talzanna, from nowhere..."

It is before she can finish her sentence when a powerhouse of a dappled grey comes barreling toward her and her present company. He too was large and by the looks of it, one who likes to be in charge. His menacing words fling toward Erebor, then toward her. Pet? He called her pet. Oh no, that wouldn't do. Talzanna physically looks him up and down with her head cocked and eyes blazing. "And what makes you think I am a 'pet'? she practically spat venom at him, letting him know she was not to be intimidated or treated like some sort of rag doll or some unfortunate soul to make do his bidding. She stares at him for a moment more before speaking again. "I would have you ask me again for my name, but I will let you off the hook this time. I am Talzanna." That's right, she is no fragile porcelain dolly. She smiled darkly, she wished she could have stood up to her mother like that when she left her. But no need to focus on the past now. This was her time to show what she was made of. She was Flamevein's spawn, obviously she has some fire in her. She speaks again, this time addressing both parties. "So, I now know you once made your home in the Chamber, but what is YOUR name and where you call home?...PET." She smiles devilishly at him, how about some of that Tal sass for you? She then turns her attention to Erebor. "And Erebor, could you tell me some more about this Chamber?" What a party this is turning into. She smiles even bigger, she is enjoying this...a little too much. Lets just hope she doesn't get herself into a mess she can't pick up.

Perhaps if he were a different kind of horse he'd be more responsive to her flirtations. But he is Erebor, he is not interested in love or lust, but the Chamber's strength. And so he greets her with his smile, his handsome smile that could mean so many different things. She starts to respond to him when he feels the air grow more chill and hears an unnatural crackle of ice.

Erebor is not an idiot, but he is not easily scared. He turns slowly to look at the approaching stallion, who had so clearly heralded his approach with the crackle of ice. His ears flick back in momentary annoyance. This stallion is not a source of fear; he's just an obstacle in the way of what the Chamber needs, which is this mare.

Shards spring up from the ground, but Erebor does not move. He stands his ground. If this stallion wants to outright attack him or harm him, let him do it. Erebor is not arrogant enough to presume that he alone could best a horse that could skewer him with a shard of ice, but he fully expects that the Chamber, working together, could do it easily enough.

The stallion himself comes into view, larger than Erebor both in stature and in ego. Erebor cocks his head, listening to the stallion with apparent interest, but obviously unimpressed. He may not be one to stand up for the rights of mares for chivalry's sake, but this is a potential Chamber member – he doesn't fancy seeing her pushed around. But he also doesn't feel she needs his protection. She might flounce and pretend, but it's obvious to him she knows her own mind and her own strength.

And when she speaks, his assumption is thoroughly proven correct. She spits her words right back at him, entirely unafraid, and the boy can't help but smile, just a little bit. He now has no doubt that he'd make a fine addition to the Chamber.

"Talzanna." her name rolls off his tongue as he ignores the other stallion and focuses on her. "A pleasure." his smile is small but not without warmth. "The Chamber is one of the oldest kingdoms of Beqanna." he says, his voice deep and pleasant. "Our members are strong, powerful. We are home to warriors and diplomats alike. There is a place in the Chamber for any horse who would make themselves great." he pauses again, his eyes flicking to the grey stallion for just a moment. "Those who don't have that capacity tend not to stay long." his voice is casual, silky. It might be an insult, a dig at the other man – but it could just as easily be a statement for the education of the woman before him.

"The Chamber is a beautiful land of pine trees and clearings. Beneath the ground, the heart of one of our most ancient heroes beats." His grandfather, Atrox. He wonders idly if Belgarath might know the name. "Straia is queen there, and Kavi leads the diplomatic caste. But there is always room to prove yourself and to advance." He smiles then, his eyes fixed on Talzanna. "If you'd like to see it for yourself, I'm happy to take you there."

His eyes flick to the other stallion for just a moment then, feeling in his bones that the still-unnamed ice-wielder would probably make trouble if he didn't get Talzanna to accompany him, wherever it was he was from. Erebor doesn't recognize his scent, so he figures it's probably a herd rather than a kingdom. Whatever the stallion might try, Erebor is unafraid – prepared if the stallion starts trouble, but not afraid.
