    COTY

    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

Today is the day Kypria is going to have her first adventure.

Or so she had told her mother much earlier this morning, just as the first rays of sun were beginning to climb over the canopy of the Big Island. She was almost six months old, her persuasive argument had begun, and yet she'd never left the island. The filly's closing statements had been interrupted by the arrival of her father, who had told her in his usual dismissive manner, that she could go wherever she wanted, as long as she went with someone.

Rather than risk looking back at her Ma and getting a different answer, the mauve paint filly scampers out of the clearing as quickly as her pale hooves can take her. Once she's on the beach (it doesn't take long) she lets out a high-pitched yell.

"Helloooo!" She shouts up into the sky. "Can anybody hear me?!"

Rather than stare up at the clouds for an answer, she looks back to the rest of the island that is barely lit by dawn's glow. Somewhere, probably sleeping like the lazy teenagers they are, are three potential "someones" to take with her on her very first adventure. Why haven't they woken up yet? She should try again.

    "Good morning island!"

    Kyveli
Kyveli, like her baby half-sister, has grown up impatiently besides her mother. They're almost shockingly similar - the dark purple and the pastel blue-purple girl. But there is one difference - Kyvi's father never dared set foot on their island, and it's only after her mother fell pregnant again that she was ignored enough to just go.

Not Kypria though. Kyvi knows her sister, because she still lurks around her mother sometimes, but she also loves to wander off towards and over the sea. Today is not that different, and in fact, when she spots Kypria on the beach yelling, the glittering girl giggles and approaches from just the other side.

Kypria is impatient and childish enough not to notice her super-sneaky (not at all) sister coming from across the waves, so she makes no hoof-sounds, and so it's just after the tobiano girl turns around and yells at the island, that she picks up the speed and splashes across the water to meet her. "Good morning baby sis!" she yells back at her, and splashes at her from the foaming wave that approaches the island.

    "Raul."

There was a grumble of acknowledgment.

"Raul, we don't have sisters, do we?"

A groan, clearly expressing giving up on the possibility of more sleep. "I don't think we do, Tana."

"Oh. Well, we sure have a lot of sisters for not actually having any. Pretty sure they're looking for us."

Two familiar feminine tones were reaching the brothers where they relaxed beneath a grove of rustling palms. They had been dozing nose to haunch, languid tails attempting to deter the flies who were seeking residence up each other's ears and noses. With twin groans they stretched and shook out their limbs, pulling stray twigs from each other's manes and snatching mouthfuls of leaves. In short order they were awake and ready for the day. The fiery thickness of Raul's mane and tail stood out like a beacon in the dense green backdrop of the island, though his twins cream and white and shiny blueness did little to camouflage his own hide. Not that the girls stood out any less.

Santana lifted into a playful rear upon sighting the sisters on the beach, tipping forward into a light canter alongside his brother to meet them. The canter had turned into a race somewhere along the tree line. "Hi Kyvi! Hi Pria!" The blond boy hollered as they pulled up in a cloud of dust and grit. He'd won by a nose, without using his wings, thank you very much. Raul shook his head at his twins antics, ducking clear as the winged boy flared said appendages. Tana was turning into a bit of a show off, now that they were starting to look more like adults than foals. Which was silly because Raul was somewhat obviously going to have more muscle structure than his willowy sibling. Tana had wings and sometimes he could make puffs of bitter smelling smoke come from his nose. Big deal. "What're we do- urg, Tana, knock it off!" The bigger colt nipped at his brothers shoulder for clipping his head with a hard-boned wing. Tana just pulled a face and took a step aside, grinning at the girls while his brother talked. "Anyway, you seem excited, Pria. Got anything fun planned for today?" The buckskin asked with a smile, bumping his nose towards the little sea filly in greeting.

With mom back, they had stayed pretty close to the island in recent time. She had been spending a lot of time alone, grounded to the earth until her feathers grew back in. They had tried to stay by her side as constantly as possible, but she had put an end to that, saying she was feeling better every day. They didn't need to hover, she wasn't going to vanish again. How true that was remained to be seen, but they'd been given little choice in the matter. So today, like the days before it, they would be hanging out with Kyvi and Pria, the daughters of Ivar, or at least of Ivar's mare, Kylin. The four of them together were usually a good indication that mischief was going to follow.

"AHH!" She screeches, the sound much louder than is reasonable. The overdramatics are paired with Kypria's sudden spinning about to face the voice behind her, which almost unbalances her entirely and ends with her stumbling to catch herself in the sand.

"Kyveli!" The filly shouts, just as loud but not quite as shrill as her shriek from moments ago. "You scared me!"

It's not quite clear if that is true, or if Kypria has simply inherited a flair for the dramatic, but either way excitement has quickly begun to overtake the surprise in her young face. The tobiano filly is just about to tell her elder sibling that they are going on an adventure when she hears them coming.

The boys are almost always found as a pair, Kypria has found, and so it is no surprise to see them racing racing together down the beach. The purple-haired filly considers the palomino and buckskin to be as much her siblings as Kyveli is (no one has explained the concepts of fostering or adoption or guardianship to her), and she unabashedly presses a touch to each of their muzzles in greeting, a kiss of familiarity.

Then she steps back, and the excitement in her face melds with a fierce sort of determination.

"We are going on an adventure today," she tells her assembled siblings. "I wanted to see the big island and Daddy said I could go if someone went with me. So that means if I have lots of someones we can go even farther and go all the way to the mainland." This is, of course, not at all what her father had meant. Ivar is not here to stop her though, and Kypria's excitment is growing.

"Where should we go?" That question is directed mostly to Raul and Santana, because she knows that they have not always been on the island. They have been as long as she remembers, but Kylin had once mentioned Father bringing them back, so they had to have been somewhere before.

The amethyst glittering filly grins at her little sister as she makes a show of being shocked to near-death, and laughs aloud, a light tinkling sound at her way too loud accusals. She is about to say something about seanonsters and the like, but she is distracted bu the sight - and sounds - of two colts racing towards the drama queen. She knows who they are, of course; they’re Kypria’s adopted half-silbings, somewhat. That makes there is no actual relationship between her and the boys, but through a mutual baby sister with a big mouth and those same see-through flying fish fins as the girls’ mother Kylin.

”Hi Ra, hey Tana!” she greets them as she moves from the waves to the beach; but they don’t seem to have too much attention for the fillies since one of them bashes the other in the face with a wing. Clicking her tongue, Kyvi looks at her sister a moment with her brow raised, boys could be such idiots. But her little sister is just that still - little - so the duotoned filly is way more excited at the twins’ arrival than that she has attention for either Kyvi or what those twins are actually doing.

Pria announces that she can go to the main island but maybe if she takes more horses, even further. Although Kyvi knows this is a flawed conclusion, she is not such a compliant little filly that she points that out to anyone. If they can go away from the islands a moment, then that’s fine with her!

But as Pria asks where to, Kyvi can only look at the boys for an answer. She herself had sure wandered the sea towards the main island, but never further than that. So where to?
