    COTY

    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

    { and in my dreams I've kissed your lips a thousand times }

Emotions roll off of her like waves to the shore; it almost makes me wonder if I've a new psychic gift developing, but of course that's silly and I brush off the thought immediately, focusing instead on lending her my gaze as a life line should she need it. And it seems that she would; without delay, the blue woman is asking me to lead her to Hyaline.

To lead her home, if she would accept it as such.

The journey from the field to Hyaline is a long one, but I allow it to pass in relative silence, knowing from our first encounter that conversation is not the easiest for my newly-arrived companion. We cross a wide river on our way, and I show her the shallowest crossing point before scampering across myself, looking back to make sure she's made it. Soon, the peaks of Hyaline are visible, and I point them out to her; and it is not much longer until they loom above us, the scentlines passing beneath us as we continue our approach.

Feeling more at ease now within the boundaries of my own home, I look to Brine with a soft smile, hoping the same peacefulness has found her, too. "Have you any knowledge of kingdoms, Brine?" My tone is gentle and quiet, hoping not to evoke too much stress on the part of my companion. "I don't suppose you were around before the Reckoning, though I may be mistaken. Many are immortal these days."

Turning, I continue our easy pace through the southern foothills of my kingdom. The lake will be just beyond that bend, but I have a sneaking suspicion that some of Hyaline's many friendly inhabitants might come to intercept us before then. "Just so you know, there are many others who call this place home - all very peaceful and kind in nature. I suspect we will be joined by at least one shortly; they are always pleased to see a new face. I promise it won't be overwhelming."

for every tyrant, a tear for the vulnerable
in every lost soul, the bones of a miracle

A turtle crawls slowly through the fallen leaves, its every step a labor to it’s viewer. Kensa does her best not to stress him, but she can’t help but sniff at his shell. She’d discovered him while grazing in the lush foothills and her inspection leaves a green smear over the box turtle’s mottled home. She is in awe of his armored house, which he retreated into when she got too close. Kensa tosses her head slightly and sniffs him one more time before deciding to move away so he can go wherever it is he intends to. She doesn’t want to pester the poor thing, she’s only curious. She didn’t think know there were turtles in Hyaline.

That’s what she loves of course, there are lots of things that she still doesn’t know about Hyaline.

As she moves away, dropping her head to go back to her meal, her topaz eyes make a quick pass over her surroundings. When they catch on a painted mare she knows to be Kagerus she raises her head once more. The two of them have not formally met, and she wonders if this is a good time to introduce herself. A stranger trails after the antlered queen, and something about her posture bids Kensa to approach slowly and draw up at a very polite distance.

“Hello Kagerus. Hello.” She says to each in turn, giving her name to both of them together and hoping she is not remiss in taking this time to give the Queen a name for the liver chestnut adventurer who has settled happily into her kingdom over the last 3 seasons. “ I’m Kensa.” And then softer, to the mare who has followed Kagerus into the mountains. “Welcome to Hyaline.”

She is an abnormal breed. Her coat of feathers instead of hair, her feet talons rather than hooves. Brine knows of her differences, more so now that she follows the nearly pristine queen back to her homeland. Her coat of white and warm brown seemingly painted in perfect strokes. Brine hates her for it.

As if to solve her insecurities, Brine adjusts the wings that sprout large from her shoulders to cover more of her body, black drapes covering her malnourished body and dull coat.

The trek is long and dragged, but she can appreciate the silence that hovers between them. Not much of a conversationalist, she takes advantage of the peace while it lingers. If she had the choice, she would live her life this way always. Mute.

It isn’t until the stench of more horses tingles her nose that she realizes how close they must be to the kingdom Kagerus calls hers. It is then the silence breaks, asking if Brine knew the history of the kingdoms and something or other of a Reckoning.

She feels an overwhelming sense of annoyance as she realizes Kagerus might be testing her knowledge. As if in an instant this mare will deem her worthy or unworthy on a simplistic history lesson. “I haven’t shown interest in the history of what seems like petty conflict.”

For a moment, silence falls upon them as they work through the foothills, her mouth becoming increasingly dry. Perhaps the mare is psychic, because upon her growing heart rate the queen speaks again of stress-free conversations and the inhabitants of what she calls Hyaline.

“Sure,” she hardly chokes out, almost barely considered a whisper.

It certainly does not take long before a dark liver chestnut meets them, however Brine notices the apparent caution the mare takes. For a moment, Brine feels the muscles of her back release. A momentary break in what is otherwise the most nerve-wracking situation she has found herself in yet.

What is with all the females?

“Brine,” she nods shortly, “thank you.”

The air feels different, the mood setting around her feels livelier and more positive. Almost like a dream, if such a dream was imaginable.

I haven't shown interest in the history of what seems like petty conflict.

The statement - delivered without any specific emotion - causes me to laugh dryly, the sound reverberating through my chest as we walk through my kingdom. Perhaps I have thought too highly of myself, and spoken too much for the liking of the quiet roan mare; but I allow the moment to pass into silence just as she does, knowing that to elaborate would definitely make me out to be an annoyance.

I shake my shoulders gently as we wander, hoping to relieve some of the social anxiety drifting around us. I barely hear her when she whispers something of an agreement; but it is in the end neither of our choices whether or not someone approaches.

Still, I am grateful when one does.

Kensa greets me first, and I reach out to gently exchange breath with her. "Hello, Ambassador." The title sounds fitting as I cast it into the air between us; a mischievous smile shows momentarily on my mutilated face, but it passes just as quickly when we pull back from one another. Stepping away, I allow the two to greet each other; it is a quiet affair, one that I have more appreciation for than actual skill, all things considered.

"If you'll excuse me," I murmur with a small step forward, eyes going from Kensa to Brine, "I must be away on some business." It is not a lie - I am off to a kingdom to establish our relation after a recent change in rulership. But I also see that now is a good time for me to slip off, as Brine has found someone who may perhaps give her solace in her time of need.

"I hope you have a pleasant day."

@[Kensa] @[Briseis] - just a note to lurking faeries that this thread began pre-contagion!
also, jet - there is a kingdom meeting posted in the Cove which Brine would know about IC, so in the current timeline, she should know about the sickness and have chosen whether to live in the safety of the cove or in her original/somewhat dangerous home, hyaline.

Kensa greets Kagerus with a brief exchange of breath. Being addressed as Ambassador for the first time makes the mustang girl smile and a blush warms her cheeks. It will be a while before she is accustomed to the title.  Kensa is closer to Brine but does not trespass on the unfamiliar mare’s personal space. Not because she has claws instead of hooves, or huge dark wings that she wears like a cowl, but because Kensa guesses that Brine would prefer the distance. Better to err on the side of caution, if she is wrong she only seems a little more reserved than she really is and that assumption will be quickly corrected after a short acquaintance. So she only accepts the mare’s name with her own nod, brief but not chilly.

She smiles and nods as the tobiano Queen excuses herself. “A pleasure to see you Kagerus.” She states a glance spared for the direction in which the sovereign heads. After only a beat, Kensa looks back to Brine while turning toward the interior of Hyaline, taking over as escort if the feathered mare will allow her. “If I may, I can show you a quiet place to rest. You are free to explore Hyaline at your leisure, of course.” Kensa knows almost every square foot of the alpine kingdom and could take Brine anywhere she liked. But sometimes it is better to discover things for yourself.

She chooses to lead her toward a place both secluded and situated so that one might observe any approach made. A ragged apple tree bent by many seasons of heavy production stands squat among a proliferation of wild plum--fruitless now that summer has passed, still red-purple in autumn-- and overshadowed by tall oaks that have all but dropped their acorns. These taller trees are rangy and spaced well apart. The lake is beyond this, cerulean and clear and already frigid this time of year. The walk is short and she makes her way quietly, the valley sweeping out before them when they stop. It’s a pretty enough picture, though Kensa doesn’t care for these colder seasons and the way they turn everything duller in the end. Returning her clear topaz eyes to Brine, she speaks once more. “There are higher places that might suit you better if you prefer to be on wing, but from here you can see most of Hyaline.” She might have said that she envied the woman’s wings, or asked what it was to be unencumbered by hooves because Kensa is incredibly curious by nature...but she is also markedly sensitive to others and she wouldn’t want to make Brine feel like she was picking at their differences. Instead, she offers, “I can leave you alone to rest if you wish.”

She will also be happy to stay, though that is implied, she makes no effort to seem as though she needs to be someplace else. Her own arrival in Hyaline had been a whirlwind, and she was immediately taken with the calm sanctuary kingdom. She’d like to know what Brine saw when she looked out over the mountains and valley.
