    COTY

    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

There's something new and refreshing about spring in a way that fall and summer never could be. Certainly not winter, winter is a time for burrowing deep down in your skin and letting the world slip away. Spring, though, brings about the birthing of fresh new children. Surgery does not think about this in the way of a cannibal - no! He thinks about it in the way of an eternal optimist, albeit a serious one. See, Surgery has been long from Beqanna and in his sojourn he's learned a thing or two about being optimistic. His childhood was fraught with disaster and sadness, and while he still harbors hatred of magic he no longer lets it control him.

Maybe he read one too many self help books. Whatever it is, it looks good on him.

Surgery prowls the edges of the forest with his new upbeat manner, realizing that Beqanna has changed once more since he was last within her borders. The lands shifted again, the kingdoms dropped and then materialized once more, the edges of the kingdoms now boasted new lands for those to frequent and claim. The entire thing is overwhelming and rather than join in on the newness, Surgery sticks to what he knows.

    He knows the forest.
    He knows the river.
He knows the commonlands and prefers these lands to stick it out until he figures something out. Anything out, really.

" Some girls are like butterflies: Pretty to see, hard to catch. "

She wanted to explore, see all that Beqanna had to offer aside from what she already knows. So far she has roamed the Field and Meadow, and now the Forest has peaked her interest. It was a lot different from the wide open spaces, though, not just the fact that towering trees surrounded her. It was easy to get lost in; everywhere she looked there was nothing but trees, trees and more trees. No matter how much she adventured amongst the trees, it looked as if she wasn’t making any progress. By now she was sure she was going in circles.

But she didn’t particularly mind. She’d find her way out sometime; might as well enjoy the new scenery while she was there. And so she walked with slow, calming strides, while her blue eyes busied themselves by examining her surroundings. When she didn’t linger on how lost she was, the Forest was quite pretty. The canopy shielded her from the blinding sun, only allowing a few of its warm rays to seep between the leaves and branches here and there. The air was warm with a slight chill under the shade, filled with lovely birdsong and an occasional rustle from the trees as a breeze passed by. So far she hadn’t seen any living creatures, aside from a few squirrels scuttling up a tree, or a bird pecking at the ground for worms.

All in all, it was a serene experience. For a while now she had a longing to just lie down, just letting the living Forest lull her. Maybe she could just wait for someone else to come around and guide her out. There was plenty of vegetation to feed on while she waited. Heh, sure. Like that would happen.

She sighed lightly to herself, chuckling a little at her own desire to be lazy. If she was having trouble putting effort into trying to continue onward, then this was going to be a long journey.

It doesn't take long for Surgery to realize he's not alone.
The trill of the birds around him has him temporarily distracted, watching the way they flit about. He's always been fascinated by their wings, by the way they naturally fly from one place to the other. Not in the unnatural way horses do it, with those too-large wings plastered to their side. The look of it disgusts him, the very thought of the magic coursing through their veins enough to turn him off to the very thought of a conversation. He bypasses these horses in the Forest, avoiding their unique appearances as the abominations they truly are. He doesn't understand why they would choose to be such degenerates when they could give up their ugly traits to the Mountain. He would do it if he had any, fortunately Surgery is just as average and normal and magic-less as the day he was born.
Fortunately, so is the mare who stands a few feet from him.
Normally he is not particularly friendly, not in the outgoing way where he'd just introduce himself to a random creature and strike up a conversation. But he's friendly enough, enough to issue a low whinny to announce himself before trotting over the few paces to meet her.
"Hello there," he says, happy to see she doesn't have any of the signs of magic.

What was it she was thinking only moments ago? That someone could just come along and help her escape the Forest without much effort? Why had she discarded the idea? Dang it! She really could have just lied down to sleep while waiting for someone to appear! Her eyes sparkled hopefully when the stranger approached her, giving her the appearance of a poor soul that had been hopelessly lost for weeks.

“I’m saved!” She practically squealed. Who knew her desire to be lazy would cause her to act in such a way. She just wasn’t used to having to put effort into much of anything. All she really cared about was sleep and bathing under the sun. “I’ve been stuck in this forest for hours!” She said dramatically, exaggerating quite a bit as well. But that’s how long she felt she had been stuck there. “I thought I’d never get out.” Quite the drama queen indeed.

She then took a step back in case she was making the stranger uncomfortable, then gave him the brightest smile. “I’m Sunniva, by the way. And what’s the name of my rescuer?”
