    COTY

    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

Winds ripple pleasantly around the girl, tugging at feathers and tangling tails as she makes a quiet descent towards the glittering waters that marked one of the few neutral waterways in Beqanna. Powerful beats of too large wings sent her rocketing through the skies enjoying the sun as it danced along with her. The river was a safe place, large enough to avoid others and usually fairly quiet. For a little while the girl would be able to bask in the sun without the crushing weight of the woods trapping her wings and keeping her grounded.

Larentia had grown up in the forests of Beqanna. Slinking through the trees after her mother, never staying put long enough to make friends. It was enough to drive anybody to flee the dark. With the streak of good weather it was time to exercise the only things that gave her the good feelings. Her kinda boring, over-large wings. The best gift she could have received from dear old dad. She never got the chance to meet her dad, and mom... Well polite company didn't talk about mom much. Anybody watching them would have thought them twins if they didn't recognize the wolf and her little winged pup, especially once Larentia grew up and her mom hadn't changed. The similarities really were striking. From the silvery color of manes and tails, to the gunmetal shimmer of their hides. Larentia grew up in her mothers shadow, and if not for the wings she would have been doomed to stay there.

Hooves touch the earth kindly as she lands, bright green grass swaying around her ankles. She closes her eyes and inhales the bright scents of water and flowers, giving her body a chance to regain it's balance and composure. Larentia opens her brilliant blue eyes to watch a pair of osprey weave along the top of the water. A faint smile cracks her lips as she studies their movement and approaches the water's edge. With a soft sigh she enters the cool waters.

    "How lovely."

The boy has crossed over to the mainland on his own, jumping from sandy shoal to sandy shoal as quickly as he could and then racing up the beach. Only when he is at the river’s mouth does the appaloosa child stop to look back toward Ischia. No one was chasing after him, he’d managed to escape on his own! Feeling like he’d accomplished a rite of passage the colt turns proudly and follows the river inland with a high head and flagging ebony tail.

The river is an interesting kind of water. It seems to stay predictably in its bed and does not reach for him unexpectedly like the ocean sometimes does. It was like the springs at home that bubbled up from earth, most of them cold and sweet to drink. Unlike the springs the river is wide and meanders far out of sight. And while it is shallow in many places--Qaen watches a few trout and salmon skittering thought the rocky shallows on their smooth bellies--it is unknowably deep and dark in others.

Qaen has slowed to a walk, wandering along the grassy and pebbled bank. There are many curious things to see along a river’s edge and he is chasing bullfrogs and watching a muskrat wind her way through the water, and then before he knows it bounding into the river shallows after the glinting bodies of fish. He has no idea where he is, but is old enough to understand that to go home he just needs to turn back and follow the river back out towards the coast and home. He has forgotten that he’ll need to wait for a low tide to get home on his young legs.

He notices the older filly after splashing along the river’s bend after a fish. He jumps up onto the knobby dirt bank to stare at her. Her black wings are beautiful, like his father’s huge incredible wings that he hadn’t been lucky enough to inherit. Her blue eyes follow the movements of a pair of large birds and Qaen finds he would like to know her name, and what she likes best about flying, and…

The colt steps forward, moving thoughtlessly and dropping into a deep hole in the river. Water closes quickly over his head and Qaen panics. White light bursts from his skin and for a second lights up the water all around him in a flash so bright that the colt cannot be seen. It fades just before his black face breaks the surface and he scrabbles up into the shallower water that still comes up to his shoulders. Drenched, he snorts and coughs, shakes water from his ears. There he stands embarrassed and sullen in the the river, hooves planted about the slippery rocks as the current breaks against his narrow chest. He avoids looking at the filly, maybe she’ll leave and pretend she didn’t see anything.

The young Bay filly made her way towards the river when she spotted two others in the distance. She knew that she shouldn't have left her mother like she did. She decided to approach the others and called out so that they knew she was there. She stopped a respectable distance away from the pair and gave them a small smile. The girl bowed and said "Hello. My name is Titanica. Its nice to meet someone who isn't family. May I know your names?" She was way to excited and knew that she needed to calm herself down before her new friends left.
