    COTY

    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

Gods, it was humid. He'd thought Tephra had been muggy, but the climate of Ischia was in a class all its own. Like trying to breath in the clouds, it was. Kwartz flexed his wings unhappily. Krom and Karat wanted to come here for sentimental reasons as much as anything. It was humid and gritty and he kept tripping on vines and roots. No room to stretch his wings. Such was the price of family.

Upon reaching the island they had parted ways for a time, seeking out what answers they may in the chaos. Half-sighted, he had soared overhead a while, making a map in his head of where looked promising. So far, so little. The beach, perhaps. He could land for a while, rest in the winter's sun. That was one bright side, at least it was warm here. With easy grace, his hooves thudded down into the sand. His head tossed elegantly, knocking back the curtain of forelock from his good eye.

At first glance, it'd be easy to think him blind in total. One eye a glassy white marble in its socket, the other silvery pale. That was the one to watch. Cold and calculating, merciless aside from a few select individuals who he felt at peace with. It was a short list. But with those few his personality was almost unrecognizable. A roll of the die to see what face would show itself today.

The night was growing long and she had yet to locate her twin sibling.  Having just left a run in with a curious creature, she scrambles to the sanded beaches so she may see for some distance.  The jungles were thicker than she had remembered.

Her silver hooves sink into the sands as she makes her way up the coast again.  Eyes ever vigilant as to what or who she may come upon next.  There is a heavy sound coming from just ahead and it stops her in her tracks.  Ever since leaving the meeting with Ivar she couldn't help but feel eyes on the back of her neck.  Or, maybe it was the dulling pain of a fresh bite wound...

Squinting into the dark, she sees another pale piebald form and it takes only a moment for her to recognize just who it was.  "Kwartz!" She shouts in a hushed whisper.  Her long limbs move her forwards quickly. "Did you see where Krom went?"  The usual soft tone of her voice is quickened in almost concern.

"We should find the others and get them back to Tephra where it is... safe." The word leaves her lips just when she feels a cool draft on the edge of her spine.  "What the..."

@[Kwartz] not sure if it's possible to feel a plague XD

Out of the gloom a familiar figure appears. Dressed in silver and heathered purple, she's as welcome a sight as any he was likely to find here. A lopsided grin stretched his lips in greeting, only to fade as her anxiety reached him. "No, I haven't seen him. Where did you disappear off to?" He asked concernedly. The feathered drape of his wings fluttered, her nerves infiltrating his own emotions. Normally he would be much more flippant, but something about this place rubbed him the wrong way. Glancing over his own shoulder, his good eye scanned the surrounding area mistrustfully. This jungle was eerie.

He stepped closer to pull his sister into an embrace. "What others? What..." A foreign odor caught his nostrils, filling them with a salty tang. His lips tightened to a hard line, but he chose not to finish his question. If she wanted to speak of it, she would. Still... it was worrying. He never should have let her out of his sight.

Skin pricking with apprehension, the pegasus stood back. "What's on your mind, Karat. Something's off." The tangled fall of his forelock got tossed back again, letting him fix her with a silvery eye. He was all for going back to Tephra, but they'd come here for a reason. That had to be taken care of before escape would be possible.

The pungent odor infiltrates her nose and she exhales sharply to rid herself of it.  They had been warned that these lands were unsafe, but Ischia was her home and she couldn't just leave it to rot.

Kwartz smells is too but nothing further happens so she dismisses it to a rotting carcass of sea life nearby.  The lines of her profile are deepened with concern still as her eyes shift to where she has come from.  The bargain she had just made sits tight in her chest, unknowing if it was the wise choice.  But she couldn't take it back now.

Attention returns to Kwartz as she explains of what she knows, "The plague has reached this island.  Krom was coming to help get anyone who remained here to Tephra where it is safe if they wished... I have yet to run into anyone."  That wished to leave, she wants to say but holds it to herself.

Kwartz doesn't often show concern and it surprises her some to see it on his face now.  Was it that obvious the apprehension she has?  She chuckles softly to cover her fears, "It's nothing Kwartz... Must just be the vacancy of this place.  I remember it more lively."   Pushing her worries aside she smiles to her brother.  He was the complete opposite of Krom and it was a breath of fresh air.  She felt as though she could breathe easy alongside Kwartz.

Her eyes shift to the inlands again, "Well... Better get back to looking... Maybe you can get a better view from above??" Her question is followed by a light laugh, "Must be nice to inherit such a gift from father."   She had always been slightly envious of the wings her brother has been blessed with and often wished she could have soared alongside father...
