    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

    Hermia's Gold

There is something about fear that sets the body on fire yet the arteries to ice. It rings in the ears. It expands yet collapses the lungs. The simple soft touch of a light summer breeze fires off the nerves as if one had just been punched in the gut. No longer was she aware why she needed to run; the need to get away and forget long since had kicked in. Driving her forward. Funny how the brain works: picking what to remember, what to forget. Safety always the number one priority.
Thus she flew into the peaceful meadow like a rabbit from the jaws of a wolf. A complete contradiction. She was drenched in sweat. Tail held high. Pupils wide allowing to observe every flick of motion. Nostrils flared. Lungs heaving for more oxygen. More oxygen.
Every last hair stood on end, or what was left of her hair. Coat was trimmed to a show ready short, whiskers forgotten somewhere behind for demon’s intention of beauty. Patches of what was left of her summer coat still clinging to her body.
Something finally registered that at last she might be a secure distance off. The energy of grazing horses and flirting birds penetrating through a hazy mind. She stumbled to rake, then a stepping pace then abruptly to a standstill as if suddenly there was a 10 foot wall in front of her. With every muscle tense for action she stood, head high, four legs spread wide apart, blue eyes observing the scene around her as if seeing godzilla. Her brain still cloudy, pounding, fighting off drugs that blurred her memory.

The black figure was wondering around he was thinking alot. He had his head down with his mind tossing things all over the place. He had come here from Island Paradise to see if anyone was here. He was alone at home which was starting to bother him. He had two mares interested in him but nothing has stuck. Maybe today would be a better day, his black legs of steel carried him over the summer grass that were about half way up his legs. He had to lift his legs higher to walk or he would trip over his feet. He tossed his head as he walked keeping his forelock out of his face. It was growing out and it was getting in his way alot. He stopped in his tracks his nose flared as he was breathing alittle heavy from his traveling to the meadow. Hes been here before this wasnt the first time hes ventured to the meadow. He stopped under a talk oak tree, it was kinda breezy which blew through his mane and tail as he stood.

As he was standing under the tree his eyes wondering the land before him, he happened to get a glimpse of another figure off in the distance, they were too far for him to really see who it was. He swished his tail and started walking towards the figure it seemed like a long ways but he managed to finally walk closer to the figure. The figure was kinda golden color, as he stepped closer he noticed it was a mare, she was alone. She looked around to see if she had any company. He didnt see anyone, he approached her with his head low so not to seem threatening. Hello ma'me im Black Ranger what brings you to the meadow? He opens his mouth and smiles at the female figure. Wondering why she would be all alone where there could be danger around. This is no place for a mare such as yourself to be here alone. He looked over the mare trying to figure out her figure and who she was. She must of been new cause he doesnt remember seeing her around. It was nice to meet new creatures. It made him feel good that Beqanna was growing again.

    Hermia's Gold

Standing stiff as a statue she observed the surrounding meadow eyes following the gentle of the creek, body driving her forward for a drink but mind holding every muscle tight to position refusing to accept sanctuary. Head slowly lowering to hang loosely towards the ground as body demanded rest. Muscles quivering from exhaustion, not use to the demands of flight nor even the freedom of open fields.
    Need water.....
It was with panic and disgust that she watched the stallion approach. Her body slowly curling up and away from him.
    Where... is.... he.... going?
Energy depleted she remained still though ready to spring away at a flick of impending danger. Sides of sweat drenched chest heaved with every breathe of air.  At ten feet away, proving that indeed he was approaching she flung her head up to its full height, ears pinned back in protest. At 5 feet away she squealed out half rearing and slamming her aching front right up and out then to the ground. Head thrown sky high then freezing at his words eyeing him suspiciously.
A new wave of panic rising from deep within as mind registered there was no barrier separating the two. He was completely free to lay harm as he wished. Eyes darted across landscape noting all beasts mingled freely amongst themselves. Suddenly she longed for the safety of her four walls. Her life of solitude. Interacting with other horses only through out reached necks and double barrier she certainly hadn’t the skills of social interaction. She shrank away a pace, mouthing the air in silent submission.
“What is here? Where are the humans?”
Her voice remained strong, though patchy through her panting. Tone was matter of fact, lacking emotion. Manners forgotten.

As he got closer to the mare, her body changed in a defense posture, he was meaning no harm and yet she slashes her hooves and her teeth at him. He arches his neck pinning his ears back against his neck. He rears stomping his feet down in anger. He wasnt about to get struck by a mare he only meet just now. He was trying to be nice, he heard her squeal when she was acting a fool. He screamed at her flaring his nose and snorting. His head was high and his muscles were on full alert incase she wanted to fight.

There are no humans here, its just me Black Ranger lead stallion of Island Paradise. He snapped at her, unhappy with the way she approached his kindness. He was taller then she was, if he wanted to he could seriously injure her. But he knew better, but he pinned his ears back and reached forward and bite at her rump. He was angered that a mare would talk to him like this. But he liked her firey attitude. It was different for him, kinda like a challenge for him to get near to her. She was different from his other mares, He kept snorting and flaring his nose at her, trying to get her to back down and calm down. He was not there to harm her, he was just there to greet her that is all his intent.

He stood his ground not letting her push him away, they used to be able to do this to him but not anymore. He was stronger and more wiser then he used to be. He used to force mares to follow him back to him place. If he was that kind of stallion he would force her to follow him and have his offspring but he wasnt that kind.

    Hermia's Gold

She recoiled from his rear feeling like a wee beetle staring up at the rocky mountains. Swollen legs flailing under body struggling to remain upright and untangled. The aluminum shoe of her left front loose while right hoof was mangled where her overreach had ripped the shoe along with chunks of hoof wall off. The rush of adrenaline was receding as these small pains were a ever growing presence and nuisance in her mind. The world was caving in on her. Trees in the distance disappearing, as vision narrowed in onto the black shadow. the coos of birds faded, replaced with the ring of stress. If capable she might have lost the last of her last meal right there.
She returned to statue like state upon his words. Frozen within her self. Mind whirling over his foreign words.
What have I done? Lead stallion? What nonsense is he talking.....What mystery world is this?
There was breeding stallions, non-breeding stallions and geldings in her world. Lead stallions, on the other hand had no part to play in her world of fences and barns. The last time she had been given a space to share with another horse she was under 1, her fellow filly haven died while still nursing.
Her mind was still picking apart the latin he had spoken when he reached out that her own reaction was equal to a sloth. A screech of a banshee escaped her mouth, hind limbs shooting skyward at his retreating mouth. Then she shot off. Reached 5 beats before muscles cramped and crumbled beneath her weight no longer able to keep pace with her stubborn mind. Without an inch of elegance she plummeted to the ground, rolling once in a cloud of dust. Here she remained, brain finally acknowledging what it had been trying to ignore. Pain.

He stood puzzled in front of the golden mare. First she lashes out at him, without a warning. He calmed down knowing she was no longer a threat to his safety. She stood back and watched her move, she moved around awkwardly he couldnt put his mind on it. But it almost looked like she was in pain. His mean demeanor turned to concern, he didnt know her yet but he could never be hateful towards those that are hurt. He sniffed the palomino mare trying to figure out where the pain is coming from. He cocked his head at her wondering and trying to figure her out.

He lowered his head Your hurt?, he said with concern, what happened? He wanted to help her let her use him to keep weight off her feet cause it seemed like thats where the pain was. Here lean on me and it will help with the pain. He was trying to figure this mare out. He wasnt a mind reader so he just went off words and actions. Im not here to hurt you ma'am please let me help you. Hoping she would let him, he was interested in learning who this mare was and her story. He relaxed his body next to her to give her time to take him in without all the harshness that they first came apon.

What brings you to the meadow? There is many dangers for a mare to be here all alone. His black figure stood over her his 17 hand height usually made him feel taller then most. He was wider then she was because of muscle he had grown up with. He walked past her heading for the river, he lowered his mouth to the river and drank from the cold liquid that was rushing past his face. He then turned around facing her again, hoping she was still there. If you need a place to stay your more then welcome to come to Island Resort. We have plenty of room and plenty of food and water. He closed his eyes thinking back to his paradise, where it was always a comfortable 75 degrees year round the only bad thing about it was the storms at night, where there were shelter all over the island.

    Hermia's Gold

She laid dazed for a moment collecting her self, replaying how she ended up in a cloud of dust.
    “Fool.”
She grumbled impatiently at her own self before slowly rising up accommodating a body that no longer wanted to cooperate. The dust clung to wet coat turning her a muted yellow and blond mane and tail clung to bits of dead plant, dirt plastering into the strands. She looked sheepishly at him then giving way to her pride and circumstance.
Maybe you should listen to him. You don’t have much choice in the matter.
Shaking her head she cleared her mind the last drop of hazy drug freeing her. She eyed him wearily as he spoke, freezing uncomfortable at the idea of touch and just stared unblinkingly.
Lean on you? We don’t touch each other. What would that be like?
She eyed his physic, a massive rippling shadow in comparison. He was easily her opposite. A solid height above her with muscles that flaunted his years of freedom.Breathing a sigh of relief as he walked away to water side. Distance was good, normal and comforting.
    “What sort of dangers?”
She shivered at her own personal demons. Loud, ceaseless buzzing. Metal sharp enough to easily slice open flesh. Sharp chemicals that clog the senses and burn the skin.
“You often have all these spaces to your self?”
Big world. Tiny little mare with no muscle build.
His right. I shouldn’t be alone in a world with different rules then my own.
She inched closer to him eyeing his own build in jealousy. He could be an alley. Deciding to trust and mimicking his own calm demeanor she lunged for the river, gulping at gallons of the crisp water.

He was drinking some water when he felt her approach him inch by inch. He smiled as he drank, he looked up from the river and looked at her, turning his body to her. There are many dangers here, from something trying to eat you, to stallions forcing you have there offspring. He lowered his head to her and softer words came out almost at a whisper towards the palomino mare. But im not one of those stallions. He stepped forward brushing by her standing at her side but facing the other side looking into the mountains. I can show you the world if only you let me. But then he stepped past her, looking towards home.

He could smell the distant smell of salt water, longing and calling him to come back. The land he claimed long ago was home to him, it was a place where he felt comforted and happy and safe. Yes there is plenty of space there to go and do your own thing there. Where i wouldnt bother you unless you want me around. He stopped walking and faced her again looking at her through his long forelock mane. He looked at the tiny palomino mare, knowing at her condition she would not last long in a world that was not forgiving. His mission was to protect his herd when the day came to have one. He would die for his herd and his mares. If one would leave for outside the boundaries, he would make sure she was safe, even if it was at a distance.

He moved his nose against her neck breathing her in gently. I told you all i can about my home. Now the decision is yours, i cannot force you to make a decision. He raised his head to the stars that were quickly getting covered up by clouds and dark ones. He snorted towards the clouds it was getting darker out and usually around night time is when the storms picked up around the Island. If you need protection from the rain thats apon us. You may take shelter with me on the Island if you wish. He bowed his head in a farewell motion but didnt really want her to leave. He was trying to be a gentlemen since they didnt get off to a good start at the beginning. He started walking towards home, as the lightening started to pick up.

    Hermia's Gold

Water was like a north breeze on a hot summer day. It snaked down her throat turning desert into oasis. Fresh and clean it was the best nourishment tongue had tasted.
    No more foul metal.
She drank until she had to come up panting for oxygen. Who knew the next time she would have luxury of fresh running water. Then she rocked backwards picking right front gingerly off the ground balancing back and leftward. Eyes scanned over the land, drinking in the oasis she had stumbled upon. It had everything she could dream. Grass that grew to the sky. A steady flow of water.
Why does he want to leave here so desperately? All you could need is here.
She tensed at his touch. Nerve endings firing off like fireworks. The urge to recoil and yet the urge to lean into the comforting nature creating a war within. In parallel to her own civil war the warmth of the day was being driven out by harsh winds and dark forbidding clouds. Eyes closed as the cold wind ripped along her still wet coat cooling her body and whisking the sweat away. A shower certainly wouldn’t be out of question. Wash away all the dirt of the road, her old life. Be born again.
A true peace quickly enveloped her. The fear finally cast aside. Over worked muscle still ached but it felt as though it could just be downhill from here.
A mistaken sense of security very likely.
Yet she allowed the false security blanket to wrap around her and lull her to careless indifference. She would have stayed right there, watched him leave and fallen asleep in the rain but the crash of thunder sent her spinning around after him squealing at shock of mother nature’s anger.
“Lead the way lead stallion of Island Resort.”
