    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

All that is gold does not glitter; not all who wander are lost
The half-fish hadn’t entirely bothered with his shifting today - most of all, he had simply decided he needed to cool off, and not drown while doing it.

As such, the melding of shark and horse was not alike any other. Kelpies and mer-horses were, as far as Aodhán remembered, shifted halfway too but the other way around - a fish tail, not a shark head. Nevertheless he hadn’t bothered trying to familiarize himself with a kelpie, touch them, and take their form. No. Instead, the gold-spotted white hybrid had made his way to the water, touched the first fish he could find, and took it upon himself to change halfway. But only halfway, since he didn’t want to be eaten by a larger fish; in this ridiculous shape at least, he was something unknown and possibly scary to most watery predators, who preferred the small, regular fish. But he had still been on the smaller size when he’d reached the open water. The white shark which he had encountered right after reaching the salty environment, had quickly changed his appearance into something bigger and slightly more threatening to most aquatic life.

Besides, any predator of horse-size would have the wit to see that he was able to shift to his heart’s desire, and probably not worth the trouble of attacking for dinner. At least, so he hoped.

He had mindlessly followed the river, dismayed that the Taiga he’d known was no longer the simple and free land he had hoped to make his home. If the new people made it theirs, it would be a kingdom, or something close to it, with rules and ranks and such. If Aten stayed on, then the land would be in turmoil for some considerable time longer.

This is what had sparked his immediate leaving of the redwood forest, and in such a hurry that he couldn’t be bothered with his ridiculous half-white shark, half-white horse body, paddling through the waters from the rivermouth to whichever island he would find first. Perhaps one was unoccupied.

The island life is filled with simplicity. There are little worries here and there to be concerned about. The sun is always shining, and the days are usually warm. There are plenty of goodies to devour, from the savory flavors of the tropical greenery to the sweet flavors of the native fruits.

Eva enjoyed every aspect of her island-home. She lounged on the beach and swam when it was too hot. She enjoyed the tropical greenery or fruits depending on her latest craving. She caught a parrot or two when she was bored, or looked after her younger siblings.

Life was simply carefree here in Ischia. The quiet island was hardly ever bothered, perhaps for best considering the type of events lately Beqanna troubled itself with. Eva knows little about the world truly, even Beqanna itself. All she has ever known is the open waters, this little island, and bits and pieces of the mainland.

Today the purple nereid horse decided to enjoy the warmth of the sunshine. How could she not? It was a bright and sunny day. A couple of clouds scattered across the sky and a cool breeze blew across the seashore. Eva lounged for an hour or two on the sandy shore and then decided to make her way into the open waters.

Stepping into the water instantly changed the physical texture of her body. From the soft coat of fur to scales that allowed her to freely swim without trouble. Her body glistened more than normal when she had scales adorned on her, enhancing her attractiveness even more. It was a trait perhaps she would one day use to her own advantage, but Eva has never felt the need to yet. She only knows to protect the ones she has come to call family and to protect the very few nereids that live within Beqanna.

A familiar song comes to her mind as she drifts slowly further into the swallow waters. “Come along with me,” her soft voice sings, “We can wander through the jungle do as we please.” She then begins to hum softly, her orange-gold eyes peering at the bottom of the seafloor as she notices some of the small fish swimming around her. A soft smile interrupts her melody for a moment, but she quickly picks up the tune again. “Come along with me to a cliff and under a tree, where we can gaze upon the water.”

Suddenly, she hears a loud splash. Eva’s ear flickers instantly at the sound. Her tune ends abruptly, and her eyes dart across the open waters. The nereid peers carefully across the water. Her ears flicker again, listening to any more splashes of water. Another one is heard again, but closer this time. Eva pulls the water close to her, feeling the natural current within her reach. She sends a small powerful wave around her, throwing it in the direction where she heard the last splash near her.

“Who’s there?” Her sweet voice rings out, as she glances across the water several times.

All that is gold does not glitter; not all who wander are lost
The water is warm here, much like he remembers from what feels like ages ago when he’d heeded a fairy’s call to the Island Resort. The blue shells that he brought to them, still mark his sides today, and unbeknownst to him, also cling to the woman’s mane nearby. He remembers seeing some faces that could have been familiar, but no-one seemed to mind him back then. Instead, he remembers how he’d thought he must have been attacked by a sand monster in the very waters where he swims now, and is grateful for his new ability to shift and change into whatever his heart desires. If only for the fact that he won’t have to rest on those mudflats and possibly sink away, right now.

Lingering near the shore of a larger island, he contemplates if this might be the Resort or the other large island, Ischia. The only way to find out from his position is to swim entirely around it, which doesn’t honestly appeal to Aodhán. He is, after all, more akin to fire than water, or even to the immovable ice than this fluid, wavy, current-rich state of the liquid.

His mind occupied and on top of that, relatively slow, he doesn’t notice the nereid’s legs in the water; and though his subconscious has long since led him towards the source of a lovely female voice, he gets hit by a wave full in the sides, and tumbles over beneath the surface.

That is when he finally decides to change, and as such, it is a metallic golden carp, only slightly larger than a horse’s head, making his way over the sand ridges and into the oddly directed new current.

When he decides to peek out of the waves, the sight of the insanely beautiful mare leaves him rather speechless, and the only movements he still makes is absentmindedly made with his fins, to ensure he stays in the same spot. Perhaps somewhere in the back of his mind he acknowledges that she might be searching for something, or that he is clearly visible now, being a metallic gleam between the waves that roll to shore. But the green emeralds on his shimmering golden fish-head never fail to keep her in his line of sight, and not a single word seems good enough to describe her beauty and no greeting could ever match the luring sound of her voice.

Her warm orange-gold eyes pierce across the surface of the water around her. The water is wild for a moment, but slowly begins to settle down after her manipulation. She is cautious in these few moments.

It is not any day like this that the water feels foreign to her. Something feels unnatural to her. As if something new lingers just around the corner.

In the corner of her eye, she catches sight of something shimmering. Her gaze naturally moves with ease. Every movement of hers is with grace and beauty—the natural traits her nereid species are gifted with.

Eva naturally catches the metallic golden carp, finding two emerald orbs staring back at her. It could not be missed seeing such a sight. It was not an everyday occurrence that a fish stared back at you. Eva knew no fish naturally did.

There was something more to this.

The purple nereid treads closer to the metallic golden carp. She keeps her gaze still on the carp, drawn to the bright emeralds that peer at her equally. A soft smile grows slowly across her lips the closer she moves to the carp. It is a curious smile, but beautiful and unique to only her.

“Hello, little fish,” Her voice rings with warmth, almost like a song. “Are you lost?” She asks with a soft laugh at the end. Her eyes are warm and bright now, as she settles a short distance from the golden carp.

She’s looking - she’s watching. He should be scared, but he isn’t. He’s only dreading the moment he needs to act.

But as was to be expected, it didn’t take her very long to notice the golden carp, and yet he might have hoped that she hadn’t. If only to keep looking, to admire the purple and sunset combination of eternal, water-based, magical beauty. She was a dream - better not wake up!

But she turns, eventually, or very quickly (he hasn’t kept track of time). He blinks at her, but a fish can - thankfully - not look very bashful.

Not can it smile, and with a flick of his newly grown fish tail, the carp swims closer to the nereid vision. Passing between her forelegs and then past her, he elongates - an eel, no, a water snake, gold and flecked with white. Making a u-turn, the snake lifts his finned head out of the water, exchanging fins for feathers and thus the transformation into the mythical flying serpent is complete. Or complete enough anyway.

”Not lost, milady.” a handsome, lazy smile spreads across his temporarily reptilian face, large green eyes taking in her form as if still not believing her to be real. But everything about her is perfect, and so is her voice - so he adds a few soft words. ”There’s nowhere else I’d rather be right now.” The words might have been suggestive, but the tone is certainly not - too very much impressed with the other shifter, although he hasn’t seen her non-nereid form as of yet and probably may not, today.

She cannot keep her eyes off the mythical creature. There was something enchanting about it. A creature of the sea she has never seen before. How could she have ever missed it?

Eva watches with curiosity. The same curiosity that she has always had since she was a young filly. It is a curiosity that children lose when they grow up, but the purple nereid simply has not. She may ever lose her child-like wonderment of the world.

Her warm eyes follow the mythical creature where he swims. At least as much as she can. She laughs softly when she feels him pass through her forelegs. Her gaze traces to where the creature lifts up, transforming now into something different—a shifter of sort, she guesses.

The mythical creature is gold and flecked with white, still matching the metallic gold it adorns moments ago. Eva has never seen anything like it before. A creature so beautiful. A creature that could be anything, perhaps?

Her purple ears flick forward as a voice comes from the mythical shifter. A handsome smile spreads across his reptilian face. Eva keeps her eyes carefully on his emerald ones. She is stuck in his trance again. It wouldn’t be possible for her to remove her gaze from his own now.

Eva can feel her cheeks burn brightly from the words that the sea creature says next. “Nowhere I rather not be either,” she says, her smile widens a bit further. The nereid had never been quiet so enchanted. It was only the sea that made her feel like she does now, but for the first time it was not. The shifter instantly caught her interest.

“I’m Eva,” she offers with a gently tilt of her finely shaped Arabian cranium.

As a child, he’d always been so easily intrigued by something. Now, new things were scarcer, but they certainly still existed. And his curiosity was never sated when it came to pretty new things. This mare, for one - purple and golden and with a shimmering beauty he could probably not match, scales so fine they could be missed in one looked quickly - she was certainly most intriguing.

His shifting abilities came in handy, to keep her entertained, and possibly for her to return a similar obsession. The compelling need to know the other, more completely than before. He wants to know her. Wants to feel her, touch her, see if she’s really real - silently, the sea creature now moves the tail end of his elongated body, caressing a leg softly beneath the surface as he continues their conversation almost casually. ”Well met, Eva. My name’s Aodhán,” he tells her. ”You know, I came to explore the Ischian islands, but I find myself compelled to rather stay with you today. If you don’t mind, that is.” Honestly, if she did mind, then he’d rather not force himself to look at her and feel the pain of seeing her walking away. For now though, there was a tension between them, a magnetic pull that seemed to draw them together, closer, and he’d do nothing rather than wrap around her fully, feel as much of her as possible, carry her with him to see the corals and bright fish of way down deep below - she’s only have to say the word. ”You are a water creature, aren’t you? Have you seen the bottom of the ocean?” he wonders aloud - and carefully asking if she could breathe underwater, just to be sure. Although something inside him tells me she can, and pulling her under may have no other consequences than something completely wonderful, he’d rather make sure. Something, someone, so pretty, deserves to live and to be admired, after all.

There are many things she found curious in the world. Some of them she had spent days attending to, discovering every angle and ability it had. With the gold and white flecked creature, it was entirely new.

Something deep within her blossomed. A part of her she never knew existed. A desire she never experienced before. She wanted more of it. Whatever it was, she needed all of it.

Eva feels a gentle touch along her leg. It tickles her softly and sends soft electric signals of excitement throughout her body. The nereid had never felt anything like it before. Sure, she had been touched and given affection from her adoptive mother, but it was nothing like this.

The purple seahorse smiles shyly at him. A sweet smile full of temptation and seduction. It has never touched her thin lips until now. “Well, @[Aodhan],” she says with a slight tilt of her head in a teasing tone, “I wouldn’t mind the company at all.” Every part of her wanted to spend the rest of her days in this moment.

She can feel the magnetic pull pulsating between them. It would be wrong of her to simply spend the rest of her days doing what she always does. A mistake it would be to let go of this deep desire that she is engulfed in now.

“Of course, I can!” A soft laugh parts through her lips. “I am a nereid. The ocean is our home more than anywhere else.” She treads a little closer to him in the water without a thought of personal space. “I would not be against seeing the bottom of the ocean with you though,” she offers with a gleam of mischief in her warm orange-gold eyes.

A nereid - ah, the myths and wonders aren’t lost to the world at all. She’s magic, he knew that all along, though to what extent her scales and beauty protected her, he hadn’t been sure. This though, explained a lot. And perhaps, he muses, he could try to take a form more similar to herself - but it is the large serpent-like form that he keeps now, only exchanging the feathers for gills and fins now. It’s not much of a change - hardly noticed probably.

He moves closer to her, eyes fixed on her - oh, she’s got him alright. She’s something he cannot escape for the life of him, and it’s only her invitation that sprouts a moment of clarity - if it can be called clarity at all - ”then that’s what we’ll do,” he figures.

He comes forward, headfirst, hesitantly at first in caressing the curve of her jaw as if trying to gauge if that’s allowed, then her neck with more fluidity to it. His snake-shaped body moves over her shoulders and her back, inviting, then somewhat pulling, as he dives down into the water on her other side, his tail end giving her a gentle but firm nudge to come with. There is no talking underneath the surface, but for how much he wants her, right at this moment, words are really not needed anyway. He can only hope she’ll follow, he can only hope she doesn’t break their prolonged touch. It’ll be easier to take a form similar to hers, he decides, once they’re down below. It’ll be something of a crossover between his former horse-self and his current serpent shape, he supposes.

Their magnetic energy is something she truly could not deny. She is fixated on every part of him—mostly those bright emerald eyes she cannot seem to look away from. His eyes are the pretest green she had ever seen.

She laughs softly, an angelic song releasing from her vocals, at his words. Eva isn’t sure exactly how it will go, but her thoughts do not drift to that. The nereid is simply focused on him, his eyes, and his touch.

He comes closer, caressing the curve of her jawline. Eva smiles softly at him with an obvious hint of she wants more of him. He moves over her in ways she never felt before, traces against her skin that flare up with excitement. She welcomes every bit of his touch on her body—giggling softly with pleasure and smiling sweetly.

Eva pulls him into the depths of the water when she nudges her to come with him. She follows him willingly, eager to press herself against him. Every part of her wants all of him and more.

When they are underneath the water, deep down in the privacy of the ocean, she pulls herself close to him. Touching him in ways that she has never touched another, but she is drawn in by the temptation, by the gleam in his bright emerald eyes.

She doesn’t need to say anything to let him know. With her touch and movements, she makes it obvious she craves him. She welcomes him closer, his body and warmth, to make her finally a woman.
