    COTY

    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

i have loved the stars too fondly

He leaves Tephra early in the morning, the moon still visible as the sun begins to crest above the horizon. His black coat glows, the remnants of the night sky still splashed across his body. He carries night with him everywhere, unable to leave behind the thing he has been crafted from. His father was the sun and his mother was the world and he was the quiet darkness of night.

The day is crisp as autumn days should be, and so far, the sky is clear, splashed in hues of orange and yellow with the growing day. Aedan has not bothered to ask permission to leave Tephra, but he figures he’s relatively safe enough so long as he stays within the lands of his home kingdom, though why he picks Ischia he could not say.

The strange endless greenness of the place intrigues him, and the sandbar is open for crossing at the moment and so he takes advantage of the moment. He’d either have to leave before high tide or stay until it receded, but he had no plans for the day. After all, he was still a child, left to wander and play and live as he so wanted. Which usually, for him, involved trying to get away with murder.

He crosses the sandbar easily enough, though by the time he’s made the journey from Tephra to the Island it is well into the day. The air has remained crisp, the sky clear and blue, and he finds it the perfect day for an adventure. Having no concept of borders or the fact he’s supposed to stop at them, Aedan simply wanders in, making his way through the dense jungle of the island, simply looking, simply learning. Bright birds rustle in the trees around him, smaller creatures skittering underfoot. How different from his home of lava, he thinks, wondering what or perhaps who, he might find here.

She has met so many equines in Ischia, though she still feels slightly out of place. She has yet to meet a land dweller, like herself, who lives in Ischia. Yet she has filled her time visiting other kingdoms and meeting a plethora of equinea, to include her sister!

Today though, she remains in Ischia, as usual she is exploring the sandy land. She had been here a while now but there was always a new place to find. Coves, and hidden passages.

The sun was high and the sky was a clear blue that was hard to be anything but happy in this weather! Though as she travels her eyes catch a glimpse of another...someone she had never seen before.

She smiles, social interaction is what kept Vita going! The excitement has her wings lifting her off the ground, and in just a blink of her eye she finds herself landing into the soft sand before the young boy.

She takes a moment to familiarize herself with his scent, a Tephran. She should be alarmed by an 'intruder' but Tephra was there owning kingdom...and perhaps she trusted the members more than she should because her sister ruled them.

Hi! she gives a greeting, her eyes gazing over the spectacular coat that he wore. He was as black as the midnight sky, but his mane and tail polar opposite. And too top it off his pelt is speckled in stars? With an odd design near his shoulder, she was always fascinated in the appearance of others.

My name is Vita, she finally introduces herself when she breaks the trance. What brings you to Ischia? She inquires, though it was friendly rather than hostile.

He has not met very many other equines. Not that his life has been particularly long yet, and he certainly has more than enough time to meet others. Mostly he spends his time trying to sneak out from beneath the watchful eye of his parents. They expect good behavior, something the boy is highly unlikely to give them. Not that he’s particular bad, but the world calls to him, and so he goes to it. It would be easier, and perhaps preferable, to travel by night, but he lacked night vision. Though he glowed and created some of his own light, it was hardly enough to see the world by.

So he slipped away in the early morning light, before his parents woke, finally figuring out that this was the perfect time to slip away. They would likely realize he had gone when they woke, but then, it would be far too late to do anything about it and he was certain he could handle a bit of yelling.

It doesn’t take long for someone to find him, and he isn’t quite sure if he’s happy or annoyed at this. Meeting someone else is an adventure (a pretty someone else, for that matter), but it also meant he couldn’t just go wandering through Ischia uninterrupted. Ah well, he wasn’t likely to get through the island without getting caught at some point anyway.

Aedan stops, reaching for his star aura out of instinct before remembering it would only work at night. She seems friendly, at least, and he knows he probably doesn’t need any extra protection. He turns to face the girl, taking in her white and teal appearance. “Aedan,” he says, nodding his head in greeting. “I was just exploring,” he adds casually, like it’s totally normal to waltz into another land and poke around. Then, after a moment, his eyes light up just a bit, and he adds, “Perhaps you could show me around?”

She gazes at the boy, perhaps admittedly more than she should be and she tries not to make it obvious. She can't help but notice his own expression seems less than impressed with her presence, but thankfully it seems to fade as he responds back to her.

He introduces himself, Aedan, she smiles when he introduces himself and ensures his name is stored in her memory. He admits that he was just exploring, which is what she suspected, she always sees the best in people and she didn't suspect him to be spying on Ischia anyway.

Besides, Vita had a lack of boundaries herself, she always found herself in the same position that he was in right now. In the heart of a kingdom, exploring on her own before a member finds her and from there escorts her through the kingdom, which is exactly what he asks her to do.

His eyes lit up when he asked, and her own match his expression. She was excited to show another her home and quickly agrees Okay! Her wings lift her off the ground, but when she realizes she got ahead of herself and the stag didn't have any wings to fly with she lowers herself back to the ground. She giggles out of embarrassment before glancing off to her favorite spot. Let's go this way! she says.

She knew the perfect little pool of water, it was like a mini ocean inside the island that was barricaded by a waterfall. The two traveled beside each other, and of course the chatter box that she was had plenty of questions for him. Where are you from? Is the first question that escapes her mouth, she wonders if he was a free spirit like herself, or maybe a land dwelling equine who had a love for the ocean life just like she had!

The concept of spying. The young boy knows nothing of politics, let alone why anyone would need to spy. He understands it only as a child does, in the way they spy on their parents to make sure they aren’t looking. That is a skill he is particularly good at, constantly sneaking away and off on new adventures. Not that his parents were overbearing – they weren’t – but still he was a boy and wont to misbehave as much as he could without overstepping too far.

He’s less experienced with girls than he is with slipping away from his parents watchful gazes though. Maybe that’s part of his lack of excitement when she first arrives, something akin more to terror than disappointment. What does one do with a girl? A pretty girl at that, with kind bright eyes and a welcoming demeanor. He feels a little out of his depth, but at least she likes the idea of exploring as much as he does.

Vita is quick to agree to show him around, and he finds himself settling in as best as a foolish boy ever can around a girl. But then…well then she takes off and he finds himself staring dumbfounded at her as she takes off. He is made of the sky, but it is not his to explore. Quickly though she stops, landing again with embarrassment all over her face and he manages not to laugh. Not at her, but rather at the fact they were both simply awkward and incapable of such an interaction.

Well, at least it wasn’t just him.

She leads him off on hoof now, chattering away, able to fill space where he is not, a thing he is thankful for. “Tephra,” he says, looking around at the territory that was so very different. “It’s not so very green there.” Lilianna had added greenery, but it was nothing like this. And besides, he wasn’t sure how long any of that could actually last without her around now.

Ischia had always been the home that Vita looked for, and thankfully it wasn't a territory that held limitations on visitors....or at least not that she knew of. She welcomed all into Ischia, thankfully none of them had been rude so she had no reason to turn anyone away.

Aedan was a quite boy, but Vita talked enough for the both of them! She didn't mind it, and when they travel beside each other she quickly fills the silence around them. She asks where his home is, and when he says Tephra her eyes glow just a bit brighter! After recently learning Leliana was her sister she had an admiration for Tephra, and naturally all of Tephra's members. My sister lives there! she quickly blurts out, she still didn't know that Leliana had stepped down or she may not have been so quick to admit it.

She listens as he speaks again, noting that Tephra was not green like Ischia. She giggles a bit, her home was full of foliage not just green but some of the most brightly colored flowers you would ever see. though she doesn't need to point it out when they pull up to there destination. It was a large body of water, the water was fresh instead of the ocean that surrounds the island. With trees behind them, and rocks encasing the small lake it was rather desolate and peaceful.

It was perhaps because most of the Ischian residents were sea dwellers, that she was often left to peace and quiet in this lake. I come here often, she says aloud, her gaze flicking over the scenery. It is rather peaceful, I've never ran into another member since being here. It was a chilly autumn day but she could never pass up a swim in body of water. She quickly moves into the water and turns back to the ebony boy Come in! It's only a little cold she laughs gently, her hoof splashing at the water as she encourages him in.

He didn’t much know the policies of Tephra, or if it would be the home that he stayed at or merely the place he began life. There were too many possibilities for him to decide now, and so little he had seen and done. For now, the choice was not his, and even if it was he would choose to stay with his parents. He was lucky in that, to have loving parents that cared for him, dotted on him. That was not something everyone got, and though he snuck away as any colt is likely to do, he still loved his parents for all they gave him.

Vita mentions her sister, and Aedan is glad for a topic that he knows how to respond to. Seriously, where was his voice? Did voices always disappear around pretty girls or did one learn how to speak in their presence? “Who is your sister? I don’t know very many horses that but I know a few. Maybe I’ve met her?” Or maybe he hadn’t, but he could also go hunt out this sister of Vita’s and get to know her. It seemed like a perfectly good adventure for another day.

They keep walking until they reach what is clearly their destination. It is a lake rather than the ocean that surrounds them, but oh, it is beautiful. Rocks surround the small body of water, and the colors of the flowers around them are colors he hardly knew existed. They certainly did not exist in Tephra, which had only hints of such life left by Liliana and some natural growth. Before he can manage to find words to describe how pretty this is, Vita is already in the water.

A grin spreads across Aedan’s face. He does not need be told twice and the cold doesn’t bother him much. After all, he’s a boy, and if she can handle it surely he can too. Not that women are not strong, but rather, he just doesn’t want to let down a pretty girl at such an invitation. And maybe a little bit he doesn’t want to be shown up.

The starry boy splashes into the water behind her, moving further away from shore where fish dart angrily away from his legs. They glimmer in the water, probably annoyed at being disturbed, though he’s having too much fun to feel bad. “It’s really nice here. I see why you like it.” And he does see why. Moreover, he finds himself immensely grateful she would share it with him. “Thank you for showing me.”

It was nice to meet someone who was a land dweller, someone like her. She instantly felt connected to the boy, he couldn't slip into the water and vanish like the othere, he'd have to leave behind some trace.

When she mentions her sister in Tephra Aedan seems to quickly perk up at the topic, in fact maybe the most interest there whole interaction. Though she understands, when you have pride for your home every mention of it connects you back.

With a smile on her maw she responds to his question, her names Leliana! Her mind drifts to the red and bay mare, unknown to her that she was once the queen of Tephra.

When she invites (more like urges) him to get in the water a small grin is noticable on his face. Perhaps he was finally warming up to her, and she watches as he quickly follows behind her. The fish swarm away, and she giggles as her eyes watch them flee.

When he finds a spot in the water he admits to liking it, even thanks her for showing it to him. In all honesty she didn't want him to leave, she finally found a friend who could enjoy the simple things in life like a small pond like this one. Of course! You should see it at night when all the stars are out! She smiles gazing to the sky that still had the sun in it.

Vita names her sister, and at this, Aedan finds himself a little surprised. Why though, he can’t say. There’s no reason to believe that the former Queen didn’t have siblings, but somehow he just assumed they would live in the same place. Again, why he thought this, he has no idea. His siblings are all older than they do as they wish, and perhaps one day he too would leave Tephra. It was home because his parents said it was home, and nothing more. Or maybe he stay, maybe it would become home for him. These seem like big decisions though, too big for him and certainly too big for now.

He’d rather explore, rather run from place to place and see the world (or at any rate, Beqanna, but that was the world to a boy). He’d rather meet pretty girls and chase fish away in clear blue ponds beneath a sunny sky.

“I know of your sister! I never met her, but she was Queen for a while, mostly before I was born.” He doesn’t know how long she ruled given that he hasn’t been alive for all that very long, and much of that time he didn’t even understand the concept of a Queen. He does now, of course, but she’d given the throne over to some new dude he also hadn’t met and didn’t much care to meet. This too seemed like a thing for being older, and he was definitely not older.

She mentions seeing her home at night, and he smiles at that and it’s almost as if his skin glows a little brighter. “I would like that,” he says, nodding to his own star splashed hide. “And I would like to show you Tephra, if you ever want to come.” He knows he has to leave soon. Eventually Mom would figure out he’d slipped away (again) so he should be back before she gets too worried. It seems like she should be used to his disappearing act, but she never seems to stop worrying. He has a few more minutes though.
