    COTY

    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

    what scares you?..everything

After what felt like hours, it had completely dried itself. Its insides twisted and narled with a deep need that it couldn't seem to satisfy. Weakness wouldn't be an option here, it needed to find something anything to settle the craving. The creamy creature found that the ackward things under it could move. Adjusting them the knobby legs stretched and strained to support him. Well at least it could move, that was good to know. Now maybe... It took one shaky step then another. Natural, easy as breathing, it thought to himself. Now, where to find more of that metallic stuff that seemed to help its scraping insides.

Nostrils flare, it would have to learn to work around this darkness, there was other things around... other things with heart beats, and the smell... the smell of... metallic, the sickly sweet metallic that had nurished it to his feet. The creature searches for that scent, swinging his head around to bite the innards into obediance. "Patience" it whispered, almost as a response it hears the same cry it had formed not hours ago. With the taste of liquid in its mouth, the creature finds it not as distateful as the last time. The warmth made it go down easier, though it left a ticklish wet sensation running down its belly. It creaks and wobbles, steps echoing in the cave. Where had that sound come from. He needed to know, maybe it would something that could help it. Maybe he was not the only it out there. There is a slithering of scales on rock nearby that quickly distracts it.

Stepping towards the sound, nares nudge at the heat. A long rounded thing coils under his muzzle with a hiss. It didn't like that sound, made his ears grate. It wanted to punish that sound. Make it stop, and go away. Teeth grind and the thing reels and struggles underneath its maw. It really didn't like the way this thing kept moving. It hisses again this time its so mad that it chomps down on the coil. Screaming at it to stop. It tastes the sweet metalic once more this time with a slick warm crunch as well. It was suprised by this, so anything that is warm has this taste to it. Including himself. He wondered if it would be the victim to anothers pains. Rolling the carcaus around in its mouth it likes the slithery wetness spurting down its throat. Ohh that went down so much better it was almost enjoyable that time. Twisting its neck the liquid dribbles down its chin, It needed to find someplace warm. Away from the echoes.

More steps, more struggles, a few bruises, and a couple of tender spots tell it what to look for to avoid anymore pains. There was the roughness of something solid that could damage its little buckskin body on, then there was also the wet cold stuff that was similiar to the food he had found. No warmth so far, the pains still didn't go away. It wondered just where he would find another coil to chew on again. It listens for more of the slithering sounds, but so far it can't find another. Maybe it would find them near warmth... just like him. Eventually it does find something warm, it crackles, it changes, it smells delicious.

What was it? How long had it wandered? Days? Weeks? Months? Well little more than skin and bones, the coils had kept it alive, and the cold wetness had given him belly ackes, but that too had kept him from feeling dizzy. Chapped lips are stained with red, the sickly sweet perfume clung to its coat. It wondered at just how far away from the thing that had created it, it was? There was another snap crackle and pop, then more heat. He stepped closer to it, the heat feeling intense against his skin as he attempted to figure out what it was. It seemed to be another one of those rough things that he found an annoyance to avoid. But this one was eminating heat from it. So there must be more coils nearby. Just as he thinks about it, that irritating hiss rings in its ears. Snapping its head around it bares its teeth searching for the source. "Where are you little bugger" It whispers in a glassy voice.

There’s something by the tree. The ravens cry. It starts with one, but soon they are all cawing. From the sky, from the trees. It does not matter where they are. The Chamber is alive with the warning. The ravens know that the tree is important. It is growing quickly, more tree than sapling anymore. But still, it is vulnerable, and the ravens protect it with their lives.

She is sure the ravens have begun descending around the tree, all manner of them, mostly elemental ones. She doesn’t send the real ravens into potential battles. But fire ravens and earth ravens and shadow ravens make for beautiful guards. They do not die, but reform again and again every time they are struck down. Hers is a strange magic, certainly, but it is useful.

The brown and white queen picks up a gallop through the pine forests and into the clearing. The ravens have circled the tree, though they do not necessarily seem worried. Still, they do their job, protecting the lifeblood of the Chamber. There is a boy there, too close to fire for comfort, though Straia has no maternal instinct really. She’s more of a “let them burn and figure it out.” The fire crackles and hisses, the boy snapping his head around as if to bite the source of the sound.

She notes the red lips, the dried blood obvious enough. Really? Why was the Chamber a resting home for every carnivorous horse in Beqanna? What was it about blood anyway. Grass tasted perfectly fine and actually digested appropriately. “You shouldn’t get closer,” she says, coming near enough to the boy to talk without getting in the way of those snapping teeth. “That’s fire, not food. And by the way, you are supposed to eat grass. And actually, at your age, you need milk.” She talks like the boy understands any of this. She assumes children are smarter than anyone gives them credit for, though she suspects this one won’t stop eating whatever it’s taken a fancy to.

Maybe she should give it to Shaytan as a gift. The two might get along.

It hears noises. They grow louder and louder. Screaming around it. What are they going on about. So that is what the warmth is? Tree. Its voice, sandpapery with lack of use, tongue thick and stuck in its throat. "Treeeee" it forces out, almost gagging on the word in its throat.

It can't say it doesn't like what its learning though. Nice to know something now. Just if these new sounds are here. Its pretty sure that others are also around. It opens its maw snapping around, and a new voice. A more familiar one is telling it something. "Fire" It repeats the word. Move and it would feel fire. Now if it is near tree, then how is it near fire. It figures maybe, fire and tree are one and the same.

Then again it hears more sounds. Food, it thinks to itself that, this it must be refering to coils. "Food, fire" It puts one and the other together. Yes food is warm like fire, yes it did want fire food. Now how to say that he likes this voice. "Food" It takes a step closer to the voice nudging its nares out towards the other it. Food felt nice, maybe the word could tell the other it that it thought the other it nice, like food. The other it, took a pain away.

The darkness around it doesn't let up, but it seems to get deeper now that it no longer faced the flames. It also noticed, closer to the voice is not as.... well, food. Or so it thought.

She is endlessly lucky that Erebor raised himself. Actually, he was born as an old man and just grew in body. Because truthfully, she is not all that good with children. She’s not terrible. She can keep an eye on them, teach them a thing or two, but generally there’s not much coddling. And clearly this one had no help early on in life. The boy is somewhat clueless, left alone too long to wander around. Not helpless, clearly. He’d stayed alive without sight and without help. But clueless.

When patience is required, she starts to suck.

The boy moves closer, and she does not shy away, but adds, “I’m not food, nor do I honestly know where to find you any. So you might need to learn to eat grass quickly. It’s on the ground, beneath your feet, and is not warm.” Because clearly this boy had gotten used to blood and meat. Grass may not help much, but it was something. The Chamber was not littered with all that many critters for eating. Mostly there were her ravens, and they were definitely not food.

“I’m Straia. That is my name. Do you have a name?”

It thinks on what this other it is saying. What ever they were it liked this one. It stretches out its neck reaching to feel and smell this other it. It was warm, smelled similiar to it. This did not smell like the 'food' that had sustained it.

He bumped his nostrils against her, feeling the fur, and warmth. He was taking in everything that the queen was saying. No he was not helpless, in fact most would say quite intellegant, but that didn't mean he didn't struggle. She did not feel like the snakes, with scales and small hissing mouths. At this he turned his nostrils to himself, sniffing at his own body, feeling the fur that covered his own body. Yes this one must understand him and his plight. They were to much the same for him not to stick around her. If she knew so much, then she must be able to help him understand the world that he had been born into. He turns back to her sticking out his tongue to lick at her fur like he had his own. Yes she even tasted like he did. Had she already licked the metalic stuff off herself as well.

When other it brings up food again it ponders for a moment, food was under him? Well what ever that was... If the other it thought that food was around then he should probably try to find this 'grass'. It sniffs at the blades beneath its nostrils, after all this is the dirrection it had found coils. 'Not warm' She had said, maybe this is what she refered to. Hesitantly it takes a mouth full. Not bad, it couldn't say that this was its favorite, but it didn't hurt either. Though it did miss the liquid sensation of easily sliding down its throat. Nose crinkles as it attempts to swallow the new food. Ears flicking around as it listens to the voice. "Straia" It repeats the word. Glassy voice grating with quizzical muse. "I am Straia" It says. For a moment pity shadows its features, yes Straia must be in darkness to, otherwise she would have known that he was a Straia too. They must be Straias, just like grass is food, coils are good food, trees are rough, and fire is warm. Well it was nice to know what it was now. Though what was a Straia? It wasn't sure if the word helped, or if it would just baffle him further.

With a lopsided, goofy grin, new Straia attempts to snuggle up to her. Its little tail thumping against it's haunches. It scrunches its face, how to tell Straia that it liked it. It comes up with a bright idea. "Straia like food." the scraping voice repeats, bending it spreads its legs snatching up more of the nasty food. Standing back up and bumping into her agian. Making a show of how good it tasted. Maybe if it could show Straia that food tasted good... it then proceeds to rub against Straia with a purr. Yes that should do. Maybe Straia would know the word for what he was trying to say.

There is absolutely no part of being licked that she is okay with. Not even Weed gets to lick her. Bite yes. Lick, no. She takes a slightly step back, and not unkindly (though firmly) says, “Lesson number one, you don’t lick other horses.” He could touch. She understands that it’s the only way he’s going to understand the world. Touch and smell. But she wanted to skip out on the taste part.

The boy tries grass. He wrinkles his nose some, but manages to actually eat some of it. Grass has got to be better for his stomach than blood, whether he likes the taste or not. Not that she thinks she’ll ever break him of the blood lust, but maybe he can learn not to eat meat all the time. How many blood thirsty, carnivorous horses did the Chamber really need? First bunnies, now snakes. It’s a good thing the Chamber doesn’t have all that many of either, perhaps. Or half the horses here would be terribly fat.

The boy doesn’t grasp the name thing though. “No, you are not Straia. I am. And I promise, you are not me.” After all, no one was quite like her. “A name is something special. Each of us has one. Did anyone ever call you something? Or do we need to give you a name?”

It snuggles up next to her, and she actually has to will herself to stand here. The boy seems to be expressing some sort of like (not love, just like), gratitude. Something. Not that she does touchy feely. Ever. But she stands there, probably a bit too rigid and uncomfortable, but she doubts the boy has anything to compare her to at the moment.

“Alright alright, enough. You are not a cat. But I get it. You can stay here, and we’ll see what we can teach you. Sound good?” Yea, she’s a pretty terrible mother. Adopted or not, doesn’t matter. But she won’t send him packing. Even if he freaks her out a bit. Not the blood eating. Just the purring.

He isn't sure quite what he is doing. If anything the young creature was learning that no, and not meant something bad. But if that was the case then she was saying that his coils were bad. How could they be bad? They tasted good. Well she said that grass was good, and that he was not Straia, but horse.

Ok that made sense to him. The grass didn't seem to hurt his stomach like the snakes had, and he didn't like the way Straia sounded anyways, so maybe that was a good thing. He listens to her a bit longer, she didn't seem to like the taste test. Ah well, he was catching up "No name." His glassy voice crackles cheerfully.

His ears perk a bit listening to her, stay? Did that mean he could hang around? He wasn't quite sure. He certainly didn't want to be one of the bad guys, if anything he was just learning, a inquisitive mind that he had.

With a sneeze and a shake of his mane he crinkles his nostrils, what were they supposed to do? What was he supposed to do? He wanted to help the woman, wanted to meet other horses, find out what this whole thing was about. He had heard the birds cackle to Straia for help, maybe that was the word to get others to come around? Maybe that would convey that he wanted to help her too. "help" The voice crackled again. This time milky eyes gaze in her dirrection or where he believes the voice was coming from.

He is rather determined, and this she likes. Not that she’s remotely good with children. That much should be clear by now. But she’s trying, at least. There’s got to be some credit for that, right? Hopefully. Though she wonders if the boy will like it here really, when he begins to understand more. Perhaps. And she believes he could be useful, could make something of himself. Blind or not. Really, blind might be an advantage. Who expects a blind boy to be capable of anything?

She does though. The question was simply if he wanted to be capable of the things the Chamber would ask of him.

“Well, you need a name. It is what others will call you, so you know when they are speaking to you. Do you want to chose your name, or should I pick one for you?” She won’t presume to name him. He’s not her son, not really, and so she doesn’t think she has the right to pick him name for him. Not if he knows what he wants to be called.

Hell, if her own son had wanted a different name, she would have told him to go for it. Thankfully Erebor liked his own name, so that worked out for them both.

He then adds, “help,” and not in the form of a question. And she thinks she gets it. He wants to stay, wants to help. Well, she’s not going to turn that down. “Start by learning the kingdom then. By feel, by smell. The border of the kingdom are the pine forests all around. Pines are a kind of tree, and they are very tall and feel rough. You will likely meet other Chamber horses on your travels in the kingdom. Se what you can learn from them as well.”
