    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

He is both the fuel and the dampener to Lev’s flame.

His brother was passionate and sometimes impulsive, but he preferred to observe from the background most times while playing the rearguard for his brother if need be. For one who’s barely spent any time living in the world, a strange wary regard for it remained deeply embedded within his very bones. But sometimes it was all he could do to contain the strange growly beast from within and he watched imperiously as Lev wallowed in his own free nature.

His parents were the very embodiment of how destructive passion could really be.

Although Makai remained in the twins’ life, he was somewhat distant when it came to the actual raising of them. Otets certainly loved and protected them but he was not overly affectionate. It fell to his Mamulya to provide the nurturing care only a dedicated mother could truly give. He very much relied upon his Mamulya for both his happiness and strength.

His different colored eyes stare intensely at a rabbit from across the clearing and he shifts his weight restlessly. His feet tingle with the phantom feeling of claws digging into the earth beneath him and his teeth ache with the sensation of bursting through his gums. He didn’t yet understand these urges that sometimes envelop his body. But there was something trying to claw its way out of his body.

His concentration is broken when he hears his name called. He turns towards the source and he smiles back at his Mamulya. One last questioning glance back at the unsuspecting rabbit and he begins an eager amble back to her side. Aleks looks about in an attempt to see where Lev has wandered off to for Mamulya surely was calling his brother back as well.

It doesn’t take long for the boy to sidle up to her front and he tilts his head curiously.

    Mamulya?”

Lev hunkers down, but creeps closer still—his ears lay back, his mismatched eyes narrow; it feels like his heart is going to beat through the walls of his chest and he can’t stop the little quakes of fear that rattle down his legs. It could be over at any second, he could be ripped limb from limb and his family would never be the wiser. A squawk, a ruffling of feathers, the great bird then takes to the air—Lev shivers when its shadow passes over him but that doesn’t stop him from bounding forwards when he feels he’s in the clear.

It’d started a while ago, a robin’s egg had fallen from its nest and like all children, he’d wanted to test it out by putting it in his mouth. As it turns out, he quite liked the taste and the way the bits of shell cracked between his teeth. Ever since then, he had been robbing nests and suffering the wrath of devasted but angry bird parents. Only robins, really. Sometimes crows. He’d never stolen from anything bigger than a raven before today, but he could hardly resist the shiny sapphire egg glittering in front of him like a priceless stone; he’d spotted it during his routine flight this morning, and, well, after he’d slipped away from his mother and twin brother, he couldn’t help going back for it.

Grinning, he steps over the branches and other necessary bits Mama Big Bird deemed fit to build her nest. He cracks the egg open with one sharp swing of his hoof and wastes no time digging in. It’s, quite possibly, the greatest thing he has ever tasted in his life. He laps the yolk up greedily, making funny little grunts and groans under his breath. It’s not until his tenth or eleventh slurp that he hears a cry that chills him to the bone. Sharp and shrill, Big Mama Bird makes her presence known with a warcry that sends Lev dashing out of the nest and over the edge of the cliff. He nosedives, spirals and gains speed and then just before he hits the ground a large set of feathery black wings open up and send him soaring skyward. Big Mama Bird is in hot pursuit of the little nest raider, shrieking all the while.

“MAMA!” Lev cries, shooting past Aleksandr.

The great blue bird is quick to follow, surging past the black colt without noticing him.
