    COTY

    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

    Take my heart; Gyps

Sin Killer liked the playground.  He had spent a lot of time lounging by the pond's edge while his parents lived out their quiet life on their own.  He was a self-sufficient child, for sure -- it seemed almost nothing could fluster him for long... nothing, that is, other than girls.

If there was one thing that caused him to go sailing head over feet, it was a pretty girl.  Already he'd met a few, and the meetings hadn't gone spectacularly well at all.  On his own he was confident, stoic, even-tempered.  But the moment he was in front of a filly, all of his confidence went right out the window.  One day that would all be different, but for now things were still pretty rocky.

Sin Killer stared up at the sky, which was darkening quickly.  Night would be here within a few hours, and he would have to head home.  But he was reluctant to go, just yet.  The playground was fairly empty, but he still felt there was something still here, something he'd been waiting for all day.

Lowering his gaze, Sin caught sight of a filly about his age, and immediately he froze.  She wasn't far away, not at all -- was she looking at him?  Was she wondering why he was staring?  Oh god, would she think he was rude?

Sin Killer made a show of looking around, trying to casually mask his curiosity, but it was probably far too late for that.  His eyes flicked back to the filly, and he tucked his chin shyly.  He raised one small hoof and pawed playfully at the earth, inviting her over in what was decidedly his smoothest move yet.

The light that shines so bright

It had been a combination of curiosity and loneliness that had driven her to explore the lands beyond the border of her home. She had explored the Golden Plains thoroughly, both by foot and from the sky, and there was nothing there anymore that really really kept her busy. Of course both her parents lived in the herd too and Gyps did have siblings from her age, but she didn’t really know how to connect with them.

Gyps had watched her siblings – three sisters and one brother – from afar, yet she had never approached them. She simply lacked the courage. Her siblings had a pair, an other half, someone to lean on. Rustic and Clarisse. Wolfish and Steris. And Gyps, Gyps didn’t have a twin and was alone. She really didn’t have to feel lonely, but the winged girl was afraid that her siblings would rather spend time among their close sibling.

Mother was busier now, ever since she had been appointed as alpha mare. It had given her the opportunity to sneak away, which had lead the blue haired (navy blue mane, sky blue tail) filly towards the playground. It was the first time she ever saw the place and it enchanted her. Fairies had lead the way towards this safe place, but it hadn’t been only the fairies that looked magical, the whole playground did. And Gyps couldn’t be more excited.

Whinnying – she still sounded somewhat shrill and high pitched – she trots forward, further into the grasslands. Her wings are spread out and as she beams in excitement she cannot help but to flitter them a little, without actually flying. Gyps soon spots another foal, a boy, and it causes her to come to a halt right away. For a moment she watches him, ears perked forward and short tail swaying slightly.

The small invitation is all she needs. Not paying attention to the small lake, nor any of the other gorgeous sights of the playground, she trots in his direction. Gyps whinnies again, head tilting a bit to the side as she studies him. When she is only a few meters away from him she stops, neck stretched out and eyes twinkling in excitement. ”Hi” she greets him, just as shy, before a smile starts pulling at the corner of her lips. Without further introductions she jumps forward, finally answering his invitation to play, rearing lowly as she stands beside his shoulder and playfully nipping at his withers. ”You’re it!” And with that she’s off, hoping that her new found friend would want to play this tag game with her.

He had seen a bird-horse before, but never one as beautifully blended as this girl who stood before him. He stood stock still as she came nearer, halfway between being frozen with fear and giddy with excitement. Her smile was infectious, and the sparkle in her eyes made his heart melt a little. It was something he hadn't really experienced before, and he wasn't sure if he liked the feeling or not.

Of course, he had been warned about traited horses -- and he had been keeping a close eye out for any evildoers who might cross his path. But the meaning of 'traited' was still a little unclear for the young one, and the filly's wings inspired only adoration and awe from little Sin.

The reddish colt watched her with wide eyes, his little head tilted quizzically to one side, as she came prancing his way. She paused a little way away, and he felt his anxiety climb to it's highest peak. But when she opened her mouth, all that came out was a squeaky, happy little greeting. He tried to hide the smile that flashed instantly onto his face and brought light to his greenish eyes.

He took in a breath and opened his mouth, ready to introduce himself in the old-fashioned way he had come to like -- the way he'd seen his papa act around mares. But before he could get even a peep out, she had leaped at him and was bouncing playfully in front of him. He was startled for a moment, thinking surely this would be the end of him, but when she nipped at him and skittered away, he suddenly caught wind of exactly what she was up to.

Sin Killer laughed gleefully and burst into action. The two foals went crashing wildly over the earth, in the careless and reckless way only children can do. She was fast, but he could just about match her. A dip this way and a dodge that way, and he managed to stretch his neck just far enough to bump his muzzle into her flank.

"Gotcha!" he laughed, spinning hard on his heel and reversing direction as quickly as he could. "You're it, you're it, you're it!" he called, glancing back over his shoulder with a proud grin.

It was about then that he went smacking full-force into the trunk of an old tree.

    Fwump.

Dazed, Sin Killer stared up at the dusky blue sky and laughed hard at his own fall. He was sprawled on his back with his forelegs folded neatly onto his chest, and he arched his neck around to look for the filly, ready to spring back into action if she was near enough.

The light that shines so bright

In contrast to what he thought of as normal, Gyps had whole different thoughts. She was born in a herd with traited horses. Like her winged and blue haired father. Then there was her mother, who didn’t show any traits but had blue hair. And, of course, there also were a few without something ‘special’, but in general it was normal for Gyps to see traits. But she was just as accustomed to the sight of horses that weren’t traited. That her new found playmate didn’t seem to have a trait didn’t matter, he wasn’t less because of it. Little did the little blue and black girl now know that her view on that matter would change. Rather soon too.

She simply was too excited to go through the formal process of politely greeting each other. Not to forget to mention to introduce yourself first and ask about the other’s wellbeing. Gyps just wasn’t interest in that right now, all she wanted was to play. She could always get to know the red roan colt later on, right? It was not like they would purposely harm each other.

Her wings were now folded against her sides, knowing that speeding up would only be harder if she spread them out. The resistance would slow her down and that meant that the colt would be able to easy catch up, and that wasn’t really the purpose of their tag game. Gyps had set off to run around a small lake, but before she could start circling he’s besides her. His muzzle bumps into her side, sending an electric shock through her dark body and then he’s gone. ”Yah!” she exclaims playfully, almost like she feels wronged, before she slows to turn around again.

He is in advantage, as he had been able to turn around much quicker. He had known that he was able to touch her and he would’ve been prepared to dash away from her side again. To Gyps the tag had come as a surprise, making her reaction to turn around and start chasing the colt much slower. Yet she did have something she could use in her own advantage. She whinnies loudly as she spreads her wings, feeling the air underneath them before her hooves leave the ground. Dipping her left wing she turns herself around easily. It is a few meters further when she lands again, hooves digging in the ground as Gyps tucks her wings again. She wouldn’t use her wings to fly long distances, that would be utterly unfair, but just as they slowed her down for a little bit, they also made her more agile.

But the first thing she sees is the colt sprawled out on the ground, staring up at the blue sky. She cannot help but to blink confused and as she tilts her head a bit to the side – slowing down in the process – she snorts to release some tension. ”You’re okay?” she hesitantly and carefully asks, dipping her head slightly as she trots closer to him.

When he keeps laying down she slows down even further and the excited twinkle had disappeared and made room for concern. ”Did you hurt yourself?” her voice is even softer than before, both confused and concerned because of his sudden strange behaviour. Slowly Gyps steps forward, muzzle lowered and ready to reach out to gently brush her muzzle across his shoulder.
