    COTY

    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

a new religion that will bring you to your knees.
She has descended into the shadows - a fleeting figment of the imagination to many; a manipulative image of the mind. She prefers the dim, dark rhythm of the night, in which she is unrestrained and able to move swiftly, yet the thick brush and tightly wound foliage of the forest is a beckoning mistress to her in the heat of the day. Summer has begun to wane, and with it comes a taut, icy chill as dusk surely approaches. She savors this time of day, bathing in the pale but rich sunlight that peeks through the wavering branches above - the sun has begun to fall, and yet the vivid colors of sunset still manages to crawl through the gaps above, cloaking her shining golden coat in its magenta light.

Her thick snowy wings flex as she arrives at a small clearing, shaking her bristling feathers free of the sparse leaves and twigs that have found themselves tangled within them. With a long, dreary sigh, she has grown bored of her tiring games. She has spent many days and weeks practicing her twisted, unorthodox ability - taking animals much smaller than she, both living and deceased, contorting and tormenting their fragile bones with only a forced thought from her mind. She has made their screeching bodies dance for her; she has drawn larger carcasses from the darkness and manipulated their bones from dusk until dawn. But now? Now she is bored.

Then, she pauses - a shimmer of alabaster and obsidian catches her gaze from afar, and with a glittering grin of mischief, she begins to slowly creep along the forest floor. Her slender, curving body moves with an uneasy stealth that should not come so naturally to a creature so foreboding, with such strength, but she has very nearly perfected it. She moves quietly beside him, with only a few spindly trees keeping them apart. He is massive in stature, rumbling through the forest like a lumbering thug, and she cannot keep the wry smirk from the corners of her whiskered lips. He is far from graceful, though his ego and pride radiates heavily from his patterned coat - she observes his splashed features, admiring their unique pattern, before she lashes out.

Her blunt teeth snap at his flank, but before he is able to strike out or react, she has weaved away between two pines and now stands before him, spreading her wings (if only slightly) as she simpers cockily at him.

"Watch where you're going, big boy. You never know what might be in this part of the woods .."

       If only he knew.
