    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

Like both of her previous pregnancies, Anahi found herself becoming impatient as the final few days arrived. She was constantly wondering when the little one would appear in the world, when s/he would finally decide to come out and relieve his/her dam of the extra weight on her belly. Not that Anahi cared a great deal, but the last few days of carrying the foal were always the worst. The little one just wanted to take its time when she had waited this long for the foal to appear. She was both impatient and excited, to tell the truth.

With her fillies, the birthing process had started in the morning and continued until the afternoon or so, which is why she'd always made her way to the grove. She stuck near it during the final days of her pregnancy, so she could be prepared and go to the grove to birth her foal safely. Today, or rather, tonight, was no different.

After settling down in the grove to go to sleep, Anahi found herself absent-mindedly wondering where her daughters had gone off to. With Sirana at age two, and Eiria finally a yearling, both of them were always running off to spend time together, whether to explore, hang out with the other foals, including Nitika's yearling Siba, learn diplomacy from Ashara (if they could convince her to teach them), or fighting techniques from Nitika, Raxa, and the other warriors. She had given them a time to be back by, but knew they probably wouldn't listen. They could take care of themselves anyways, and this territory was hardly dangerous. Both fillies knew it like the back of their hooves; Anahi didn't forsee any trouble for her fillies tonight.

Which is why, after she'd finally begun falling asleep, it started. The little one was finally on its way. The mare gritted her teeth, groaning a little as the familiar contraction pains ripped through her belly. She started pacing in a circle, her breathing growing heavy, the sides of her neck and her flanks quickly becoming glistened with sweat.

This process would continue for a number of hours, all the way until the wee hours of the morning. During that time, Anahi had continuously alternated between laying down and standing back up to pace. Then, finally, another pain ripped through her, and she knew it was time. The champagne mare laid down, resting her head on the ground as she began to push. Despite the number of hours of pain she'd endured, she knew this part would be quick, yet painful. She was already exhausted from pacing around, but the foal had to come out. She couldn't stop yet; she could rest after it was all over.

Within roughly half of an hour, if not shorter, the birthing was complete. Anahi remained laying on the ground, her body slick with sweat. Her nostrils were flared, her breathing quick as she came back to her senses after the birth, trying to calm herself down. She was absolutely exhausted, yet another reason the last days of pregnancy weighed on her. She did not like feeling this tired, but in the end, it was worth it. That was always how she got through it to give birth to her foal.

Movement on the grass behind her stirred the mare from her resting stage. Anahi lifted her head and looked behind her, eyes widened at what she could see. The foal was still coated with the liquid from inside the womb, but looked healthy otherwise. What astonished her was the color of the little one's coat. Unlike Sirana and Eiria, who both inherited Anahi's light champagne color, this foal sported the roan coat of its sire.

The foal was shaking a little due to the chilly morning air, but doing so would help increase its own warmth. Anahi stood up and turned around, lowering her head to sniff the newborn foal. She gently licked behind one of its ears before moving on to its nose. She began cleaning its face off, her eyes twinkling when she noticed a small star sitting in the middle of its forehead. A marking that matched the one Sirana possessed.

Anahi continued cleaning the foal until its roan coat was pretty much rid of the birthing fluid. Its black mane and tail were inky and matched its coal-colored legs perfectly. Its brown face was a tepid brown, leaving it open to whether it would darker or lighten as the foal aged. The mare stood by her foal quietly for a little while after cleaning it before the little creature made its first attempt to stand. Its wobbly legs didn't do well to support its weight the first time, so the foal tumbled back to the ground within seconds.

Anahi simply nudged the foal, urging it to try again. The foal continued to try a few more times, each one getting closer and closer to successfully standing for the first time. Finally, after what seemed like forever, the foal stood up. Getting its feet under it, the foal wobbled greatly, but remained on its hooves. It stood there, watched over by Anahi, the mare licking the foal's flank to clean away some debris from when the foal had fallen back down after an earlier attempt.

The foal finally took a step. It was wobbly, but it did not fall back down. Anahi watched as the foal started getting the hang of its legs, even if it was still a bit wobbly. While watching, Anahi made the discovery of what gender the foal was. Her heart soared when she found out, just as it had with her two daughters.

This foal, who looked so much like its father, was a colt! A perfect mirror image of his sire. The only thing he'd inherited differently was the star marking on his forehead, but it did little to take away the handsome color of his coat and the powerful presence he would no doubt grow up to be, just like his sire.

The colt finally seemed to get the hang of things. He gave a tiny whinny, a sign that told Anahi he was hungry, for her daughters had done the same thing after they'd successfully stood up on their own. The mare stepped toward her son and gave him a nudge toward her belly. She knew he would figure out on his own where the milk was.

It did take a couple of tries, but after a couple minutes, he successfully found the mare's milk. He began drinking greedily, some milk spilling down his chin. The mare laughed at her son's plight, but decided to leave him alone. She lowered her head to rest a little, her son being given the chance to drink his dam's milk in peace as the early morning hours settled over the land.

He traveled back to the herd lands finishing up a border patrol in the kingdom, it was birthing season and he was more than excited to meet his and Anahis foal. He couldn't help but think about the foal he and Morigan created, unsure if they would ever meet, now residing in Chemdogs herd. His ears pressed to his head, and his teeth bared thinking of the asshole who stole Morigan from him.

He shook the thoughts from his head as the stench of birth was in the air, a smile grew on his face knowing Anahi had given birth. He could not help the situation with Morigan, but he could meet the foal that Anahi had. Three years in a row, she provided a foal for Archam, and he knew this one would prove to be as strong and beautiful as the last two. He made his way to the grove, the spot that she enjoyed to birth in.

His stride slowed to a trot once he found the entrance, slowing to a walk once he saw the mare with the foal already feeding. A smiled curled on his lips as he moved closer to nuzzle the sweat drenched mare, moving down to view the foal, a colt. He was overcome with joy, proud to finally have a colt with Anahi, the colt was a spitting image of the two. Champagne like his mother, with the roan markings of Archam, he seemed to be strong and would prove to be a great leader one day. He walked back to Anahi not to disturb the feeding of the colt A colt....He is perfect unable to take the smile from his face. He brushed against the mare You are so strong Anahi his heart beat grew faster as he gazed at her I love you the words exited his mouth, he felt strongly for the mare for some time now, but he never shared the words with her. He was unsure if she knew, and he truly had love for the champagne mare. Always there to comfort him, protect the herd, and provide a foal.

Like every year, after she had the foal, excluding last year, he showed up. Even if the mare often birthed alone, like was common in the wild, she enjoyed it when the stallion came to check up on her, to see how she was faring and if the foal was healthy. Anahi had assessed this foal herself, determining that he was healthy, if the rate he was drinking milk wasn't enough to go by. Even now, she could see the sire of this colt within him; he would grow into a powerful leader one day, without a doubt.

The champagne mare lifted her head, hiding the fatigue in her eyes. She smiled as Archam came up to join the mare and colt, brushing against her as he spoke about the colt. Anahi nickered before gently nuzzling the stallion's neck, almost missing what he had to say next.

Wait... had he really used those three words? Those three words she honestly never thought she would hear? Stallions didn't often pick one mare to be their favorite, much less an alpha, or a horse to use those words on. But here was Archam, using them on her as he continued to smile, elated for the birth of the colt. Anahi had known for a time that she had feelings for him; they had three foals together after all. However, she was never eager to say anything, given that Archam had a herd to watch over. He couldn't be playing favorites.

But he somewhat had, making her the alpha mare. That was besides the point though; Anahi knew she held feelings for the stallion, just as he did for her. So, after glancing back to check the colt that was still suckling, Anahi turned to face Archam. Warmth and happiness flooded her eyes as she smiled at him, reaching her nose out and running it along his neck, "I love you too."

The words were spoken and he looked away, he was not the emotional type to spill such words from his mouth. And he surely never said it to another, she was the only one who has heard the words. His gazed looked for hers once he felt her touch. It was warm and gentle, she trailed it along his neck exchanging her words with him. He smiled softly when his eyes met hers, he did not have a doubt that she did love him.

He turned back down to the colt extending his neck out he nudged him gently causing him to laugh. He loved watching the innocence each foal had every spring, and they grew into mature adults whether it was a personality he liked or not. His foals all had strong personalities and this one would prove no less, with a mother as strong as Anahi and the genes of Archam this colt would prove his worth.   What have you named him? he asked gazing back up to Anahi; she always picked lovely names and he was sure this one would have a similar name.

It was a shame the colt was not the first born, a fine alpha stallion he would be. That was not to mean he couldn't have his own herd some day, but not this one.

Anahi laughed gently as the colt nickered to his sire after Archam nudged him. The colt then kicked up his back feet in a display of happiness as he trotted around both of his parents, the elated expression on his face indicating he was pleased with himself.

When Archam questioned if she had given a name to the young one yet, the champagne mare thought about it for a second. She had thought of names for a colt and filly, so that she'd have options for whatever gender foal she had. When she found out it was a colt, she'd been going through the names in her head constantly, trying to figure out which was the best option. She'd figured it out within a minute, knowing instantly what kind of stallion this colt would grow up to be.

"I was thinking of naming him... Nerius," Anahi said, looking to the bay roan stallion.

He smiled looked at the colt, he would surely be a strong stallion one day. He will make Archam proud, carrying on the blood lines of him and Anahi. This colt needed a strong name to match his personality, so young and so much in store for him. He gaze scanned back to Anahi as she spoke, Nerius she said, he smiled nuzzling her neck That is a perfect name

He lowered his head to nuzzle the foals forelock Nerius he said it, in a manner so the colt knew his name. You will grow up to be a strong stallion he smiled nudging his shoulder. Lifting his head up he looked back to Anahi you always produce strong children he truly loved Anahi, he slacked in being around as of lately, and he was proud that she still stayed around, leading the herd in his absence.
