Coming Together Is A Beginning - Aten - 12-31-2019

Could he even remember the last time he'd been staring down the volcano as if he was an intimidating predator waiting for the right time to make the kill? The stallion searched through his memories, best he could, and if he had to guess, he'd say the last time he'd been here, if at all, had been before his self-imposed exile/bachelorhood in the Forest. How had this land changed, he wondered, especially after the Plague came across the land?

It came to his mind one day that he neglected to take into account how the Plague could have damaged Beqanna's lands, not just his home and the kingdoms allied with it. Had he really been so self-absorbed that he didn't take the time to go check on friends and their family to see how they were faring? If any of the few friends he'd had prior to the Plague still existed. He wouldn't be surprised if any of them had fallen to it's power, or if they'd been gone right after he'd slipped into the shadows.

Who had he abandoned by doing that? He knew two of them, and still thought fondly of them today, but none of his old family were included there, for it had been years since encountering them and still he heard or saw no trace of them still being here.

He loved his dam and siblings dearly, but had a suspicion he would never see them again. He sought to fill that void with his new family, along with new friends he made upon visiting the common lands or the kingdoms, and that was part of his purpose here today. There was another, but it would involve meeting one of the higher ups.

As Aten approached the border, he could feel the heat of the volcano already on his skin, the steam pouring from it's mouth casting a humid fog across the land. With the dragon's nature inside him, Aten was pretty tolerant in heat unless he was there for an extended period of time. Even as his growing winter coat formed, the heat did little to bother him, though a light sheen of sweat would begin to form if he was within range of the volcano for a while.

The breath from Aten's nostrils began to thicken to where it could blend in with the fog, the heat in his body being expelled this way to help him tolerate it. His coat also began to shift a bit, for he found it easier to live in the heat when his scales were exposed. He would be careful though; if any horses came close, he would shift back. He did not wish for others to know if his gift just yet, especially if he didn't really know who they were. He would show trust, but getting to know he had a gift would take some work.

Upon reaching the border, Aten stopped just outside so his hooves were firmly rooted outside the territory. He tilted his head back and called out, asking the residents if one could come meet him. He stood there patiently, his stance tall and proud but relaxed, his eyes glancing around to watch for trouble as well as keep an eye out for any horse approaching.
