    COTY

    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

His legs were shaking, protesting the further demands on them after the long day of training. His lungs gave their own retaliation through the searing burn in his chest and the dry, hollow cough choking out of him every few strides. Even his knees kept trying to buckle under his weight, his eyes falling closed as he walked with his bone-masked head hanging, jerking back to blink the fatigue away each time he knocked against another goddamned tree. Slow, so stumbling slow.

So close, he must be close now. Then he could rest. Just a little further.

He just had to get to her.

He hissed a sharp gasp of pain as his knee gave out again and slammed to the ground. Tremors radiated from the injury like vibrations of an earthquake, catching his breath in his throat as he waited for it to subside. It was harder to get back up this time and he struggled to push his body further, put more pressure on himself to just get there, dammit. So close, almost there. But it wasn't going to happen, was it.

He finally managed to stand again… and forced himself to accept the reality of it. He wasn't going to make it there. Not like this, not when he was stumbling around like some aimless, drunk bastard, barely holding himself up and running into trees. Damn.

Bleak and bleary eyes panned around for a place, some nook or burrow at least mostly concealed from someone finding him unconscious and vulnerable. God, if he could've just made it there.. But a rest, just a brief little respite to gain the needed energy, and then he'd continue. He just had to get to her. And, damn, if that wasn't her scent in the air teasing him and tugging him onward without the break, without a pause for much-needed rest. Like enticing a starving beast with fresh meat, he could think of nothing else.

Yes, it definitely was her. He was nearing one of the places she liked to stay. His heart sighed and relief slumped his shoulders. Too soon though, as that shoulder clacked against another tree and knocked him off course. God, it was so hard to focus like this. But he was close, so close. Close enough. And he sank to the ground wherever he landed with an inward groan, eyes already glued wonderfully shut as his mind locked onto that scent and held it, clutched it for every ounce of comfort it spread through him.

Bliss. That was what he felt as he slipped into the perfect dark of unconsciousness, only to stir at a warmth settling around him and soft, sweet touches. He quietly hummed his pleasure at that, tried to lean and press closer before helplessly falling into the black again with a sigh and faint smile.

    Home.

FUCK, she was enormous. Everything ached, and Dizzy felt like she’d been pregnant for fucking ever. It was getting old. And she was getting grumpy...er. Grumpier. She waddled through the stupid forest, kicking herself for not thinking ahead and finding an actual real place to settle down. Giving the kid (who was the size of a goddamn elephant, the little shit) a home, like she and Zor had never had instead of wandering the forest forever. Dumbass. Too much work to get anywhere else now, and besides it was the only place Dov knew to look for her. She wasn’t about to up and leave now.

Not when she was like days from just bursting open and bleeding a kid out all over the forest floor.

Or as good as. She’d seen Zor being born, she knew how it worked. Ugh. God. Nope, don’t think about that, don’t think about that, don’t think that far ahead. Fuck, it was gonna be horrible, wasn’t it? Didn’t matter what she’d seen, or the fact that babies were born all the damn time just the same way. Dizzy still firmly believed her body was not meant to do that. Shove a whole kid out, then what, bounce back into shape for more fun? Even the thought of a dick getting anywhere near her after that was kind of horrifying.

Well anyhow, she might not have found her kid an actual official home or anything, but Dizzy’d always had her favorite little haunts in the forest. She’d left her latest little hidey hole to waddle toward a nearby stream for a drink, and was making her awkward, ungainly way back when she spotted a familiar heap of sexy bones lying not too far from her habitual resting place. “Well hello there,” she purred, settling herself down beside him with some difficulty. Okay, a hell of a lot of difficulty.

Don’t fucking squash him, he doesn’t look like he’s got the energy left to roll out of the way.

With a bit of work, she managed to lower herself to the ground while avoiding smothering her Dovev in his sleep with her goddamn enormous belly. Then she curled herself around him the best she could, nuzzling the soft skin of his neck between bony plates of armor. “Missed you,” she murmured, smiling as she breathed in the scent of home on his skin. Right. Stupid. Of course she had a home. It just wasn’t in any specific place. Her kid would be fine. She’d be its home, for a while at least.

“How do you do that?” she asked, even knowing he was too far gone to hear her, let alone respond. “Show up and chase all my fears away like that?” Soothe her soul with just his sleeping presence. Peace washed over her as she rested her head on his shoulder and let herself fall asleep beside him. It’s good to be home.

Mmm. He didn't want to wake. Not with that special scent he knew so well surrounding him, that soothed him and steadied his heartbeat. Or sometimes sent it into chaos. Fucking delightful chaos. And the warmth at his back, her body running so hot in her condition. This was good. So good.

A soft tap at his back finally roused him enough to drift a heavy eyelid open. He listened to her breathing, slow and steady in peaceful sleep, and he quirked a small smile. So carefully, he lifted his head and curled his neck, placing a soft kiss on her nose at his shoulder, then rolled himself around to face her, letting her head drift and resettle on the ground in her sleep. When did she get beautiful, again? He couldn't remember. It was strange to think how strongly he'd once despised her, so fiercely resented her presence.

He'd fucked things up real good this time, hadn't he?
    So good.

His gaze trailed slowly down her body, amused at how much she'd changed in such a short time. Or, what felt like a short time. Geez, she was fucking huge. She hadn't really been showing much when they'd been together, enough that he'd been surprised at her admission that she was pregnant. He wasn't there for Cerva's pregnancy, didn't know any signs to look for or what it was like for her at all, so he'd only thought Dizzy had been eating too much. Well, she had been, but to feed more than just herself.

The skin at her belly tightened with a little punch from the inside and his eyes lit up. Ahh, so it was you poking me, you little bastard. He lifted his head again and so gently pressed his brow against her, trying not to wake her. He wasn't sure how long he waited there like that before it came again, squarely on the bridge of his nose. A broad grin stretched wide as he pulled back to look, as if he'd see a kid there and not that beautiful wall protecting it. Feisty little rat, aren't you? Definitely Zor's kid. Hah, nah. Definitely Dizzy's.

As if it could hear his thoughts, the punk jabbed again at her. He chuckled quietly and rested his face against her once more. Stop it, you're gonna hurt that sexy mom of yours. I can't have that, you know. His hair tangled against her skin as he turned his head and rubbed his cheek into her, opening his eyes to see her watching him. A boyish grin split his lips and he might have blushed sheepishly just a little. Oops, mommy's awake. Bye now, kid.

He immediately drifted to her, crawling a little closer to touch a soft kiss to her neck. Just a little higher up received another one, and further another one. Hi, baby, he murmured with a smile, setting the next kiss to her jaw. He teased at the soft flesh beside it, giving a light tug with his teeth before pulling back to look at her.

    How are you feeling?

He still hadn't heard more about Zoryn, yet. Maybe that was good news. But he wouldn't ask, didn't want to chance that it wasn't all good. He couldn't imagine the bastard just accepted this and was okay with it. Just them, today. Just him and Dizzy.
