Myrna eyes her eager son, knowing that Ravin is only eager but aware that his enthusiasm might be overwhelming for Cascadia’s much younger daughter. Still, she does not object other than her quiet huff, which had been more a caution than a request that he ask permission. Stil, she does appreciate that he’d thought to ask, even belatedly, and Myrna turns her blue grey eyes to the matching ones of her daughter Luvi.
Even the girl seems excited, though it is more difficult to interpret; Luvi is watching the two newcomers with open curiosity now that she’s shaken the water from her feathered coat.
“It’s nice to meet you,” she hears Luvi say, her voice as soft as the colorful feathers of her coat. Luvi’s looking right at Wynters, and she smiles hesitantly but with true feeling. Myrna smiles too, and is ready to voice her acquiescence to Ravin’s request when she sees the expression in Cascadia’s eyes.
Myrna shakes her head, all too familiar with the alarm in the younger mother’s eyes.
“I’d like you to stay in this meadow,” she replies, “You two tend to bolt off, and I won’t have you leaving Wynters behind.” While that is certainly true, Luvi glances sharply at her mother, her silent expression saying without words: ‘I wouldn’t do that!’ Ravin gives a shrug of agreement though - he does often run off and forget what he’d been doing in the first place.
“Someday you’ll be big,” Luvi says softly to the other filly, “and you’ll be able to keep up with me.” She doesn’t add ‘and Ravin’ because even Luvi cannot always keep up with long-legged Ravin. “You just have to grow a little first.”
Myrna is pleased to see her quiet daughter taking a shine to the younger foal; she often worries that Luvi lives in the shadow of her brother, albeit contentedly. Maybe that’s the trouble with twins, she thinks, remembering an earlier conversation with her brother Tersias.
“Why don’t you go play by the stream,” Myrna suggests instead, “or go see the eggs in that lark nest have hatched yet?” As she speaks, she glances at Cascadia, trying to offer the younger mother a chance to choose from other, safer and more proximal, activities. She, too, had struggled to let the children out of her sight, but she knows that having her own family to help had greatly eased her stresses. Cascadia, on the other hand, is alone save for her daughter.
Well, Myrna amends, not alone any more. Share has Myrna and Ravin and Luvi, though the latter two are less than helpful at anything but fun, and their acquaintance is still young. Still, Myrna is hopeful.
